I have a question. We have a dry van that has some rot inside the van in the steel plate over top of the upper coupler. It was rotted to the point where pallet jacks punched thru the steel. The repair man welded a thin diamond plate section of metal onto it to cover the holes. Now that diamond plate has pushed up to form a mound and when you go under the trailer and look at the upper coupler plate and king pin the upper coupler plate is definitely concaved up a little with a quarter sized rotted hole just inside the 5th wheel travel area on the upper coupler. Question is, when using a straight edge how much of a gap is acceptable at or near the king pin? Because I measured a gap of approximately 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch and put it out of service but a repairmen that welded the diamond plate inside said that it's ok?!?!

Robert, anything over 1/4'' is too much. This trailer should not be reloaded and looked at by a reliable repair facility.

@@RoyalTruckUtilityTrailer thank you for confirming this for me! I completely 100% know that you are right. However, I would like to show DOT proof to the powers that be at my company. Do you happen to know if there any DOT publications that gives info?

Step 4 is on the allowable gap.

The flat bed plate showed air gaps, but you said it was still ok. Is there a set limit for how much of a gap you can have and still pass (like .05", 1/8", 1/4")

Thank you for your question. The gap we had on the plate was under an 1/8'' and the reason I said it was nothing to be alarmed about was because there was still some corrosion on the sides that I didn't want to slow the video down to clean, and the welds on the plate were all still in good shape and not cracked, which indicates the isn't caving in. Great question, thanks for watching!
