No one else could have pulled this off. The maniacal laughter and facial tics especially. I’m still chuckling over this clip. “Ha, Ha, Over the rainbow”
It's easy to see and admire the genius of Sellers but it may, perhaps, blind us to the brilliance of Herbert Lom, a wonderful 'serious' actor who showed an outstanding flair for comedy.
I think without Herbert Lom ,the Pink panther series wouldn't be as Hilarious as it was,I love him,his comic acting is superb, his other work as a serious actor was commendable too,a great actor.
Yeah his retarted stupidity drove him off just Homer's ape-like imcompetence drove Grimes nuts which lead to his death. I admit he (Frank) was annoying in that scene to me
+MrWestmarket39 I was thinking the same thing! All that time, all the many times he beat up and tore up his doctor's Clouseau dummy, all the talk and discussions and help to at least mentally place Clouseau in a more tolerable state in his mind...Simply flushed down the drain in *three minutes* because of Clouseau's humorous, yet insufferable at times, stupidity, clumsiness and ineptitude! *THREE MINUTES!* As much as I love Clouseau and his antics, I couldn't help but think "Oh, Clouseau! You just had to go and see him right as he was getting out?!"
One of the funniest scenes ever; Herbert Lom was just as much of a comic genius as Sellers......"Every day better and better" is a line my husband and I still quote from this scene........How the crew ever got through some scenes without completely losing it is beyond me.
"Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better" was originally formulated by Émile Coué. It has actually found use in therapy, so it is tempting to conclude that Dreyfus has been taught this line at the hospital. I haven't seen this movie, though.
@@mikeLgriebel - You're right. Shortly before this, we see Dreyfus with his psychiatrist, saying those words in unison, establishing that it's a line that he's had strongly imprinted in the hospital. You *should* watch the movie, as it's one of the funniest in the series.
" Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better "... I feel like Herbert Lom's character every day... Suffering a seemingly endless supply of complete idiots... Face it, who hasn't?...
I watched this movie for the first time ever last night. My dad used to watch these movies all the time when I was a kid back in the 80's, and never got the jokes. THIS is absolutely genius, haha.
'Pervert, the dirty old men'. I just can't stop laughing. Honestly I don't know how they came up with this. Mr. Lom and Mr. Sellers are a fine couple. You have to love them, lol.
"Don't look, Fiona!". Priceless. Though I have to say, the laughing gas/tooth extraction from THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN is undisputably one of the greatest comedic scenes ever filmed.
The falls into the water, the misunderstanding and the expression of the lady, all enthusiastic in seeing what she thought was an act of love 🤣... perfect and unforgettable scene .
"Inside trivia: Herbert Lom could not swim, so his panic reaction when he's in the water is genuine." - that doesn't follow at all, if you inferred it, it's meaningless
This is a really brilliant film. Dreyfuss is as much a fascinating character as Clouseau. I love in the beginning of this film how you see him quickly loose it.
Pure genius! They could never pull this off today..What movie could still bring tears of laughter 40 years later? (o.k., Other than What about Bob, 25 years later.)
Always loved this scene most of all. The way Dreyfus goes into the water. And the old girl "Pervert !"And this was at the start of the film before even the titles !
Herbert Lom was a really GREAT second banana! He added LOADS AND LOADS OF LAUGHS to these movies! I like the bit where Clouseau (in disguise) plays the part of a dentist, and pulls one of his teeth - the wrong one! Meanwhile, both of them are zonked on laughing gas....
" Now, I will kiss you good bye, I will walk you to your car ; which should rightfully be mine !, and then......I WILL KILL YOU ! " hahahahahahahaha Herbert Lom is hysterical !
I watch the Pink Panther’s all through my childhood. Absolutely wonderful. I’ve always found this scene so so funny. The part where the rake smacks Herbert Lom in the face and he’s back in the water for the 3rd time is just hilarious! Kills me every time …😂
I get to be Dreyfus in my schools play for the pink panther strikes again, and this is one of my favorite scenes. That, and the TV speech. Dreyfus is a very funny character, and its great to be able to get his part in a play.
But it is my day it is my friend after three long terrible years it is at last my day, I will not permit repeat not permit anything repeat anything to spoil it.
No one could have ever had more fun at his craft, than did Herbert Lom! He was wonderful! THE perfect foil for Clouseau! ----------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
As a high school kid I worked at a drive-in theater. We played this movie for two weeks. You have to imagine a summer night with people in 500 cars all laughing at once. It’s weirdly different from people laughing in a theater or auditorium.
This is without a doubt the single, most hilarious comedy scene -- EVER!!! Without exaggeration I must have seen this scene three dozen times, maybe four dozen! I know what's coming, every line! And yet when it happens I laugh out loud, stamp my feet on the floor, and pound my fist into the arm of my recliner. I JUST CAN'T HELP IT! I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND ESPECIALLY THIS SCENE THAT MUCH! 👍😁😁😁🤪🤪🤪😜😜😜
How long did it take Dreyfus to realize it was Clouseau who sent him in the water the first time? I'm guessing after he hit the water the second time, as Clouseau was there.
He looks up and says, "Someone..." And in that pause, half suspiciously looks at Clouseau, "I was hit on the head..." I think his instincts were trying to tell him in that moment, haha.
oh, but it is my day my FRIEND.. after 3 long terrible years, it is at LAST my day. I will not permit, repeat, will not permit, ANYTHING to spoil it. Now, i will walk you to the gate. You will drive off in your new car.. which should rightfully be mine. Then i will have my interview with the sanity commision. They will set me free. And then *ploink as arrow hits him in the head*.... i will kill you *proceeds to strangle Clouseau*). Its probably not word perfect, but i remember that scene very well. This whole "introductory scene" to "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is probably my favourite comedy scene ever :)
I love the part where clouseau is trying to give first aid to former chief inspector dreyfuss, and the lady thinks they are two old perverts fooling around with eachother.
It's an abbreviated version of the scene, but still worth watching. Proof that the old gags still work with the "former Chief Inspector" Dreyfus' "rake in the face"!
aw, sadness, I hadn't heard! I was just watching this film over the summer and was surprised to discover he was still around, well into his 90s. As good as Sellers was, the fact that the (by all accounts I've read) unassuming Lom was repeatedly able to steal scenes from him really says something.
Still my favorite comedy ever!! This is the best. Disappointed though in a couple of changes. They took out some sound effects that were classic. Like the old ladies handbag. It used to sounds like bricks hitting him on the head. lol.
I remember at 1:08 the sound effect was much better in old VHS-version, when she hits him it makes a huge metal/glass sound and it was much better! Hate it when they tone everything down in newer releases :(
I agree!! I've watched this a hundred times and I still tear up laughing. If I was a cameraman I would have been fired cause theres no way I could have filmed this. Lol
I've just watched this as I've spent two and half days with nightmare but gorgeous naughty 16 months granddaughter! I feel like booking myself into " Clinique Physciatric" ha ha. Watched this scene at 07.00 house with headphones on and burst into uncontrollable giggles and tears in my eyes, whilst Elaine my partner was asleep. So funny I watched it again. Everyone's right. These two were perfect match. Herbert Lom was a genius in his own right. Sellers , no more to be said !
