wow You made a part three I am so happy that you listen to fans about what videos to make this series is the most inspirational series in the world to developers. You even fixed the problem with the second video, which was that you didn’t mention what game engine each game was made in. It was in the first video. But not in the second which sucked. But hey look it’s in the third. Good job guys. I didn’t expect to get something I wanted to happen this deeply. I love this channel so much I will now even ring the bell to be notified for new releases. I was already subscribed so I’m updating to bell notified from now on.

So I am planning on making a 3D game myself but I was wondering if something like that wil take long as a single developer and if it's hard?
@progress_games
@progress_games 5 лет назад
CG depending on the language that you’re using, I suggest unity and it will be hard most likely but it gets easier along the way as u learn more
@ColonelDoge
@ColonelDoge 5 лет назад
Depends, 2D is generally easier and faster to make but it also heavily depends on game engine, the game's complexity and the time you want to spent on the game project per day. If you didn't made a game before then it probably will be hard at first but starting with 3D most likely would yield a lot of useful experience to you (so is 2D games, but in general 3D games are harder to make cause it involves more work with graphics) Don't be afraid from failure though, I admittedly only made very few prototypes before I finished my first public game but I'd say the fun I had with the development and the 250$ I got for being 15th in a contest paid it of well and got very useful feedback on how to improve my future games, honestly a game with only 32 manhours can look amazing and charming for people if done right.
@marruk7608
@marruk7608 5 лет назад
@@ColonelDoge Thnx I think i'm gonna make something like a test for both 2d and a 3d game and look at the results. The problem is the game engine. I don't know how to code so maybe I wanna do it with unity or unreal. And don't know yet.
@ColonelDoge
@ColonelDoge 5 лет назад
@@@marruk7608 No problem I'm glad to help, from experience you should learn some basic programming the main reason is that basically block-building based engines are sure great and fast without learning but trust me they become very limited later and switching to actual programming from block based 'coding' is much harder, another reason is once you have some experience with programming it becomes a lot faster to create games and essentially you gain experience which could be used from outside of game development too. both Unity and Unreal sounds like a good choice, Unity uses C# and javascript which are easier to learn while Unreal uses C++ which is somewhat harder to learn but should offer more compatibility, i started with a noname free engine named Foxkit which is unsurprisingly I can't find anywhere anymore but it was so bad that I had to rewrite the engine at the degree that I could say I created my own game engine, so yeah another useful recommendation is to avoid noname game engines. I wish you luck with game development and hopefully it will be great!

Anyone familiar with a game - it's hardly a game, more of an exploration. You fall through layer and level after layer and level, changing direction and orientation constantly, going on and on apparently limitlessly. It's drawn in simple lines, done by a single developer, over years. I don't even know if it's been released or finished. I saw it in March of this year. Anyone seen it, know its name?

These games are major accomplishments, but videos like this continue to perpetuate the myth that games can be made by a single person. None of these games were solo developed (many of them list credits of artists and others on the team), and videos such as these continue to paint unrealistic expectations for people entering into game development.

Spoiler so you don't think I'm just being negative from only reading the top of the comment: I've resubscribed (and hit the notification bell) and I'll tentatively re-continue watching your new videos now on. I unsubscribed from this channel and had stopped watching your videos many months ago, despite generally watching every major and minor gamedev channel on RU-vid. I'm a professional game developer (meaning I pay my rent by making and designing games), so most all of the content on this channel is hardly new information to me, but initially I still watched because I like to support small gamedev RU-vid channels, and I watch a _lot_ of RU-vid in the background while I work, eat, travel, cook, clean, shave, even shower..., etc. So I watched, and even popped into the Discord because it's cool to see and support small communities. I've certainly been in similar situations so I like to show support where I can. However, I'd find myself getting really annoyed by your videos because it felt like so much of them was filler. The most aggravating part to me was the super cringey "AKA" section at the start of the videos. It's all well and good to have a unique style and running gag, and it seemed like you guys found it fun which is all that really matters in life, but for me it always drove me nuts and put me in a very negative mood for the rest of the video. But disregarding that one specific gripe, the general feeling of the overuse of filler was very palpable for me. I just went back to check with the old video "7 Game Design Mistakes to Avoid! ", where the actual content doesn't begin until 1:22, in a less than 10 minute video. Some videos had an even worse filler-to-content ratio in my eyes. So eventually I got kinda too annoyed, realizing that watching these videos was having a more negative impact on me than a positive one, so I unsubbed, left the Discord, and stopped watching. This is the first video of yours I've seen in quite a while, and while it's still certainly the same, it feels a lot more matured, most notably to me with the removal of the cringey "AKA" intro gag. It's a seemingly "little" thing, but it's significant. The filler time could still be reduced in my eyes (Mainly, I think the sub-begging should go at the end of videos instead of start, but that's just me... I know you really have to do that as a RU-vidr trying to grow, but I think you should *show don't tell* why someone should subscribe by providing a nice video first, and then ask for subs after), but the filler is a lot less than before. From my previous example, the intro filler is literally cut in half, from the 1:20 (80 sec) intro for 7 Game Design Mistakes, to 0:40 (40 sec) before the start of the content here. I left this video with a much better impression. So, yeah. That's my "hot take". OooOooh. I've rusubbed (with bell otherwise what's the point), and rejoined the Discord because why not, and I'll recontinue watching. I know that was a lot of text, but if you're interested in the thought process of a gamedev who stopped watching your channel and is now returning, there's that. Regardless, I hope you're doing well and having a grand old time. I know the going gets tough. I hope you're handling it okay and are happy. I do genuinely wish y'all the best of luck in all your endeavors. Sincerely, G *Bonus:* If you'd like to know what would boost my respect for this channel _immensely_, please make a video talking about yourselves. I recommended this in the Discord months ago (in the #ag-video-suggestions properly not just in general or something) when I was first in there and it got completely ignored, but I'd love to hear about you guys as a game developers. In your channel intro I remember you saying that you're "game industry veterans", but I haven't heard how in any way. I don't know if you mentioned it in passing in another video (I doubt it), but I just skimmed all your videos and still didn't see anything like this. I'm not expecting a really grand backstory or a huge laundry list of successful games, but just some honest info about your backgrounds and experience would do wonders for my respect and interest in your channel. I think transparency is really important. It helps build personal connection (or a simulacrum of it). Just my thoughts. This is my #1 preference for future content of yours.

Since everyone and their dog can make a game now, it has all become one big popularity contest. Nobody cares bout your amazing game. Nobody. Because everyone has a game. Your girlfriend probably has a game she made in school. Your grandma has a game she accidentally put together and got more popular upvotes for it just for being old. Your dog has a game. Because who doesn't want to see a dog's game? Your cat does not have a game. Because who has time for that when you have been worshiped as a God? Nobody, cares about your game. You can have all the skills for it. All the art, music, programming. But if you don't have popularity. And you don't have a personality. Nobody... cares.

@@Alexander-gb4rr Yeah I rambled on a bit there lmao. But there are a lot of good games out there that most people don't know exists. Because most think popularity signifies 'good'. If you make a fun game you might get a very small niche market following. But it won't be enough. To get anywhere in a flooded market like this you need a game that is fun. You need popularity. And then luck and timing. It's like singers. Lots of people can sing. But only very few get noticed. And even fewer can make a living at it. People work their whole lives hoping to get a chance. Most don't make it past a church choir and a small youtube following. Doesn't mean you shouldn't make a game. As long as people are realistic about it.
