Hello,
This video shows how I install the Borgeson steering shaft on a 1990 Ford Bronco. This is the same procedure for all full size 1980-1996 Ford Trucks. The truck in the video is a 1990 Bronco.
Borgeson steering shafts are well made and a solid replacement to the factory old shaft that will develop play in the coupler, joint and telescoping mechanism itself.
There are two compatible Borgeson steering shafts, one with the dampener (more expensive, and has factory feel) and one without.
Tools needed:
-Drill with 5/16 bit
-Cutting wheel, or hacksaw
-Set of allen wrenchs
-Basic 3/8 drive ratchet wrench set

Ladies and Gentlemen, It's 2 weeks since I saw these videos... I cannot stress this enough... If you miss tight steering and smooth responses, get these two mods!! No, I do not work for either of them, nor do I work for a supplier or retailer of any sort... But you gotta trust me, the Redhead steering gear box and the Borgeson steering shaft are the best money I've ever put into a used vehicle, hands down!! I don't have enough words to express how satisfied I am!! Oh, my word!! I took 2 test drives this evening and I cannot get over how much my 1991 model steers like it's a 2023 model!!! Absolutely magnificent!!

WARNING WARNING... the link in the description does not go to Part # 000985, it goes to # 000980 which DOES NOT fit. I bought it buy mistake. The coupler joint at the steering wheel is way too big. I called Borgeson and they gave me the correct coupler PN to buy. I bought it, and the 000980 shaft is about 2 inches too short. Be careful when you order, make sure you get 000985, not 000980

Also, on my 1995 Bronco, there is no u joint hear the master cylinder. The other end of the shaft and u joint is under the dashboard.

Test drove a 3 inch lifted 1989 Bronco this evening. The steering was SUPER sketchy. If I end up buying it I’ll definitely be installing the red head box and upgrading the steering shaft. Hopefully it helps.

@@TheFixTech Convinced me to do the same upgrades on my 91. I've been driving with a 15 degree dead zone at the top of steering wheel for years, haha. My Red Head and shaft just showed up today, looking forward to seeing the improvements. Going to replace the drag link and add a steering stabilizer as well.

@@TheFixTech Holy crap, what a difference the gear box and shaft made. Like a brand new truck. On another note, have you ever had your speedometer bump up +5 mph or so at speed? Kind of bounces to 80 when driving 72 mph or so then returns back to the 72. Saw something about possible vss? Only happens intermittently

Not sure why borgenson labeled it that way in the past, 92-96 is different. My 1995 wasn't like this.

@@milesaway1980 The steering box is out of stock on eBay but i might get the borgeson shaft and install that. My '95 has 310k on it and as far as I can tell everything is original. I did tighten the screw on the steering box around 230k miles.

Did you replace your steering shaft because you observed play in its U-joint? Or are there other points of wear on the shaft that I should evaluate (along with the gearbox, drag link, and tie rods)? I bought my 96 with horrendous steering play but still too busy just getting it to run right. Steering is next. Dude, I have so much work to do on this thing. Thanks.

Best upgrade to improve steering, I used a steering stabilizer at first but quickly threw it out. A new (brand new internals) red head box and this shaft tightened up my steering hood as new. Be sure your tie rods and drag link are good.

Ok i like the fact this shaft is far better then factory but for them to make it where you have to now cut and drill to make it work is just stupid. Cause if you cut wrong or drill at thw wrong angle or anything, you can mess it up and poasibly just end up wasting money. Why not just make them to where they are factory length to begin with.
@RalphSampson...
@RalphSampson... 2 года назад
Why not simply set the new shaft next to the one removed on the floor? Then, you cut the new one to match the old one. Seems a lot simpler....no measuring needed.
@martyhonda6983
@martyhonda6983 2 года назад
That’s a good idea but what if the stock shaft has moved it’s a good idea to measure and compare …measure twice cut once
@boyracer3477
@boyracer3477 Год назад
@@martyhonda6983 Or maybe first measure and mark where you might cut. Then place the old one next to it to see if the two coincide in length. If not, figure out why not before you cut into $300.
@steveh7108
@steveh7108 Год назад
Or just measure from a fixed point like where the set screw goes.
