If you dont have a WP screw or switch, here’s how to disable WP. 1. Open the back/bottom as you would doing the screw/switch. 2. Take out the battery from the PCI port and put it somewhere safe. 3. Plug in you charger, obviously because you have no battery. 4. Login to Chrome like you usually would. 5. Do Ctrl + Alt + T to open Chromes Command Line 6. Type in shell 7. Type in sudo sh 8. Type in flashrom -wp-disable 9. Type in flashrom -wp-status to see if WP is disable, if it is, turn of the computer, put back in your battery, and boot up like you always do! (Keep charger in when booting up)

Just bought an Acer C720 Chromebook, Chrome OS was outdated, so I installed Linux Mint 19, and a new battery, super easy, About 7 hours mobile, does everything I need it to do. Great video , very interesting.

Just to confirm, I followed this process and it seems to have worked for me without issue. There were a few steps along the way that did not line up with the instructions, but these were most likely due to a difference in the make and model of my Chromebook. The differences were small enough where I was able to go with my gut and kind of wing it, but I am currently running GalliumOS on my Chromebook and there seems to be no real loss of any keys or functions. Thank you very much for the video.

I had two older laptops that God wouldn't let me get rid of. They were so slow that I couldn't use them anymore. I went to RU-vid looking for something. As I was there I heard the word about making a slow older computer like new. I stop and listen. I knew this was from God. I watched several videos on Linux. I believe you was the man God used to speak directly to me. You mentioned Zorin os was the best. You had on a white shirt and it was a close up of you. When you said Zorin OS is the best it was God speaking through you directly to me. I am totally grateful to you. I have a bad back and now both my old laptops are working again. I am not surprised you are doing well on your channel because your heart is in the right place to help others. Again I am so grateful to you and continue to be a blessing.

Thanks for an awesome instructional video! I was able to successfully install GalliumOS on my HP Chromebook 14 G4 (Kip-Bay Trail). I have installed several distros on older windows laptops, but never flashed a ROM before. I'm amazed at how well Gallium OS works on my Chromebook. The battery life went up 2+ hours. I am getting over 8 hrs mixed use running Firefox and can get 10 if I keep video streaming at a minimum. It also feels quicker and more responsive than ChromeOS. Your instructions were very easy to follow. I highly recommend this video as the go to for anyone wishing to do a full install with a similar device. Well done!

Thank you for this! This is a useful alternative for the huge amount of e-waste generated by End-of-Life Chromebooks, especially those used by users to facilitate remote learning for grade schools. If my school board is typical, it would be in the thousands. Once the Chromebooks are EOL, they are crushed. An immense waste of resources.

Great job... thanks for the video! It's unfortunate that all Chromebooks eventually become obsolete because of lack of continued support by Google. Having an OS specifically designed for Chromebooks can breathe new life into obsolete machines, possibly making them even better than the original Chrome OS. Thanks again!!

Many thanks for this - I now have GalliumOS running on my Toshiba Chrome Book 2 - Which I now know is Intel Baytrail! All the key things work - on/off button - wifi - LAN (through USB adaptor) HDMI out and headphones. A few false starts (think this was because the chromebook is different from yours - or maybe I didn't understand completely all the steps!) and I had to re-install ChromeOS a one point. But now boots up straight in to Gallium. Last issue was fixed by running the install without wifi connected. And now those nasty messages about it being unsupported by Google after September have gone too. Thanks again m8

If your Gallium install FAILS, try NOT connecting to the internet when it asks you that right at the start during the install. I don't know WHY there is not more discussion about this but I found it on some forum and Mr.Chrome himself was the person who gave that solution. I was at wits end till I found that solution. Good luck!

Even before the recent EOL for my Acer C720, it was no longer getting Chrome OS improvements like the ability to run Android apps or Linux programs, so I'd been using crouton for quite a while. EOL and another gentleman's RU-vid video (he had a C720,too, so I felt more confident) pushed me over the edge, and I ran first NixOS, and now Manjaro (KDE flavor) on it. I will definitely give Gallium a look. Now that you have Linux on your Chromebook, what have you done do get around Chromebook keyboards not having keys like HOME, END, PG UP and PG DOWN?

My chromebook is stuck in the bunny page and it looks different

I fixed it after 3 days of hard work, but i really suggest putting some steps before the Bunny page. Everyone reading this, SAVE YOUR STUFF ON THE USB. IT WAS THE ONLY METHOD FOR ME TO RECOVER IT. OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS JUST GLICHED FOR ME WHEN I DOWNLOADED IT TO RESTORE FUNCTIONALITY TO IT.

@@shipuku0305 Hmm, I always recommend Ubuntu as the first OS to install. It will get rid of everything and give you proprietary drivers. Those proprietary drivers is super handy to have. There could be wifi, touchpad, gpu, cpu, and etc types of proprietary drivers that the laptop needs to function with. Some linux distros and "flavors" do not have those proprietary drivers.

Without seeing the motherboard, I couldn't even take a guess, however, maybe this post can help you. www.reddit.com/r/GalliumOS/comments/8fnxj0/need_help_locating_write_protection_screw_on_hp/

Excellent description for installing GalliumOS. It is also possible to assess whether GalliumOS is suitable as a replacement for ChromeOS. It's like that with me. The performance is good. Very smooth work and a lot of RAM free. The devices also work, especially the speakers. My Chromebook stopped getting updates, which is especially bad for the browser. Because at some point you won't be able to watch Netflix, Prime Video, etc. anymore. Now I can use my device until it breaks. Help: I tried to install GalliumOS on my Acer C720 / Intel Celeron 2955U with the Haswell version of GalliumOS. I get to the screen with the rabbit; however when I try to load the GalliumOS image from my USB stick I get the following message: error: unknown filesystem. alloc magic is broken at 0X73f09740: 73e2e100. Aborted. Press any key for exit._ Any suggestions of what can be wrong and how I can fix this issue? Please let me know. I tried to download GalliumOS image on different USB sticks but I keep getting the same message. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick with the recommended settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hmm. It could be the difference between a legacy boot vs UEFI boot. Try the UUI installer from Pendrivelinux.com to make your USB, I think it's worth a shot, anyway.

@@LowDoughTech thank you very much for your reply. i found a way to make it work. the problem was when creating the bootable usb stick using rufus. i had to change the settings from the recommended default ios mode to dd mode on the rufus app and after that my chromebook was able to read the usb immediately. the key is to make sure you are careful when creating your bootable usb stick using rufus. thank you

Does anyone know if installing GalliumOS on a chromebook requires deleting all of the data on a chromebook? I might have some important documents on there but if that's the case I might be able to just put it on some cloud storage for a bit.

Installing Gallium under this method will indeed wipe out all of the files on your Chrome OS install. The method that I cover here completely formats your hard drive before installation.

For me ChromeOS is just plain useless, like a handicapped version of Android because most of the apps I'd WANT to use on a "laptop" won't even run on a Chromebook. So Linux it is... I kind of prefer Manjaro with the plasma desktop, already comes with most of the apps/packages I like using. The warning at 1:38 though... LMAO I make "unauthorized mods" to practically EVERYTHING I own, I seriously need to get one of those shirts that says "I void warranty's"! 😎
