Hey i'm trying to replicate your config on openSUSE Tumbleweeed can you make a video of configuring everything from start not using any scripts. If there is any old video on this channel link it please i tired but didn't find any video which doesn't uses scripts
I did this EXACT process last night on my machine and installed your dotfiles as a base config, it's looking gorgeous and working flawlessly! Thank you for all the support and videos on this topic 👍
Just getting into Arch after using other distros for a long time, and came across your videos. I love how clearly you present all the different concepts. I just installed the latest version of your dotfiles (so one unified install script instead of the separate ones in this video) on my Thinkpad that I purposely bought as a Linux machine, and it's working beautifully.
!EDIT! Works under BIOS if you remember to move your optical drive up in the boot options menu before beginning install. UEFI still breaks everything. All following this guide just omit the part about switching to UEFI, and go with GRUB instead of systemd-boot all is good. Does not work as of 01/05/2024 02:19am Eastern time US. Breaks right at load up with UEFI selected. Running under BIOS will allow you to run the installer, but it fails. Currently Hyprland does not work under other VMs without a lot of user intervention due to hotkey bindings withing the VM managers themselves.
another great video, thank you for the walkthrough with the new archinstaller. good to see the new packages in the installer, i am currently working on a script that i run just before your dotfiles to install the latest nvidia-dkms and make the appropriate alterations to the grub/mkinitcpio and then adding the nvidia variables into the system and the hyprland.conf file i have also tweaked your original rounded waybar to be more square with additional functionality added to your default waybar modules config well done and keep up the amazing work you are doing, i had become uninspired with Linux in the last few years Gnome going off on a strange tangent, KDE/XFCE are pretty stagnant in their DE's but you have started a fire in me and using i am using it full time with hyprland as my default desktop
oh wow, and I just started from scratch last week with sway... but didn't use the script, did it all by hand XD had I known sway and hyprland were already there! last time I checked it was only full desktop environments like plasma and gnome :/ Oh well, at least I learned A LOT by doing everything like that XD next time I'll do it like you did on this video
Thank you again. I have it working on an older laptop and now with Proxmox. It works pretty well in proxmox better than I expected using VIRT-GL and SPICE. I didn't think aliasing "w" was a good idea as that's a common shell command but easy to fix. haha I look forward to more videos Take care
@@mylinuxforwork Finally got some time for this and yes wallpaper issue has been fixed even tho I didn't completely follow your tutorial, but I am glad it worked
@mylinuxforwork I did. About six months ago, I manually installed Arch. That process is really involved in customization and doing it yourself. Once I get passthrough graphics working, I would save my machine backup via Rescuezilla. Then I will try to reinstall the same config with a hardened kernel. I intend to remote into it from work and begin working on my web server.
I was trying to automate hyprland instalation for nvidia and found that you can execute any command on vim startup. With this It is possible to easily guide the user by telling them which file is going to be opened (/etc/default/grub in my case) and then ask them if they want the instruction to be copied to vim's main register like, for example: vim -c "let @\"='GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=nvidia_drm.modeset=1'" /etc/default/grub It is also possible to automate this with regex and all that but i it would be much more cumbersome to implement.
Hey! I cant install .gtkrc-2.0 somehow. always when i get to this step, i cant type anything in, no Y, no N, nothing. all steps before worked perfect. any ideas?
Hi everyone! If you are in the United States and are having problems with your keyboard, you need to change the layout for hyprland. To fix that, open the terminal and type: nano ~/config/hypr/conf/keyboard.conf Change the values accordingly and save it. kb_layout = us kb_variant = intl kb_model = pc105 kb_options = kb_rules = follow_mouse = 1 touchpad { natural_scroll = false sensitivity = 0 # -1.0 - 1.0, 0 means no modification. Log out or reboot.
your install files worked perfectly on the sep arch release, but when i follow to do it on the 10.14 rls i cant go into the hyprland conf files or find the hypr folder once the dotfiles are installed. for some wierd reason i go back to the stock hyprland page after bootup and not the proper desktop. it worked fine on the older one. but cant get it to work on the new one. it says folder not found. you have the best dotfile install files for sure bro. cant wait for a new update video. maybe im doing something wrong.
Hey, great configs. Can you also add controls for volume and brightness keys? Didn't work for me(volume keys). Brightness worked after installing brightnessctl but the thing is, it only goes to 70% and 100%, can you please add a progressive increment/decrement for both volume and brightness keys? These are the only things that your configs are missing, otherwise, it's really really top notch. Thanks for this!
Hi. Thanks for your feedback. The upcoming version 2.5 will include better brightness controls. Release is planned for next week. But you can already access the dev branch. Volume controls will come later.
@@mylinuxforwork how can i update that? i am facing the same issue kitty not opening on super + q i tried to reinstall and gtk3 too but still not working
Thanks for this video! I installed for the first time Arch and followed your steps, after restart i got just wallpaper, no top bar, no keybindings, just a wallpaper :) what did i do wrong?!
Difficult to find out without getting more details. It seams that the dotfiles are not installed correctly. Have you restarted your system? Do you get ly as display manager and Hyprland is selected? And can you chevk that the symbolic links are set correctly in your .config folder?
Works perfectly! 👍 One question. How do I get the multi-media keys via FN and F10 (mute), F11 (quieter) and F12 (louder) into hyprland? Also via the hyprland.conf? Pipewire is installed. With KDE or e.g. Gnome, this works after the basic installation.
Hi thank you for the tutorial , it works awesome . I will share it on FB pages. I just have one more question about it. How you can make the wallpaper static or set a wallpaper? I have been looking around and not finding something related to it. I did accomplish make the IP Static but not the wallpaper. If you have any Idea please let me know. :)
Thank you. For wallpapers please check hyprpaper. I have it on my Hyprland starter: gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/hyprland-starter/-/tree/main/hypr?ref_type=heads
I have installed in the same way as in vide. But dolphin theme is not dark and there is split_search/menu button on right. And, when I try to mount to other drives, it says Cannot request authentication. PolicyKit authentication system alpears to not available.
@mylinuxforwork i installed polkit-dumb-agent and it worked. But the theme is still not working. I opened dolphin with environment set but it was still light theme
Thanks for the work. The desk is awesome now I had little trouble with the latest git clone. Don't know if it is only for me or I have messed up the installation 🙂 1. The script didn't allow to clone on the $HOME folder. When I cloned it to Downloads and started install.sh, it installed normally but the config files were symlinked to $HOME/dotfiles folder which was empty. I copied the contents from Downloads/dotfiles to $HOME/dotfiles then it worked normally 2. There was an error regarding color in conf. Sorry forgot the file. The config was for active title bar color. Would you mind answering few questions? 1. I have an NVIDIA GPU, and had chosen NVDIA prorprietary drivers during archinstall. Would it be an issue ? 2. Is there an alt + tab alternative to switch applications?
Can you install rsync manually with sudo pacman -S rsync and try again? Then the dotfiles folder should be filled with the config files. Can you give me a feedback again if it’s working again?
@@mylinuxforwork Thanks for the response I am a Linux Noob. I installed rsync as you advised. But when I run rsync it says it needs params / options. Should I specify any? I am new to rsync command. Just an FYI, the desktop works good after I copied my contents from Downloads/dotfiles to $HOME/dotfiles
Hey man please respond, i did the steps but when i got into the hyprland i instead got a black flashing text saying same as yours, and the resolution on my cursor was also low, and i could only open kitty but it was flashing too.
After booting up hyprland, the Ethernet didn't work. Like, even though I'm connected to an Ethernet, I can't install any packages. Did I missed anything?
Tried to install on VMWare, I log in to Hyprland, and Kitty doesn't open. I can quit and open up WOFI, so inputs work. Tried to run kitty through WOFI, but the VM will freeze. I have 3D acceleration on. Any idea on what went wrong?
Everything working and works very smoothly but the apps button which at the top left of the screen and power button which at the top right of the screen not works for me :(
@@mylinuxforwork also: cause of being new to the linux world, I think I might have missed something, I did a nice setup using the video where you install hyprland on endeavour os, it works.
Thanks for your hard and beautiful work, i did install your dotfile, but waybar disapear or hyprland frozen , what i have is wallpaper screen with time and date on center, could you help
Have you 3D acceleration enabled? Never tested with hyper-v but with qemu, kvm under linux everything should work. I have also tested under Virtualbox but also here 3D acceleration is required.
I think there is a script in /home/user/dotfiles/scripts/ path that doesnt let you have a static Wallpaper. Everything I do restart it switch the wallpaper :( . I have been looking around for 3 days now
Thanks for detailed installation guide. I've installed Arch on VM with installation script like in your video. But when I shutdown VM and set settings for 3D acceleration and OpenGL it doesn't pass login screen. When trying login as created user it flashes to screen where it prints "Could not connect to socket /run/seatd.sock" and "failed to open seat" and returns to login screen. Even though I selected polkit during installation. I've read that it might be related to hyprland and 3D acceleration settings with spice. I have two GPU's in host, both are from Nvidia. Quadro 600 for host and GTX 1050Ti for passthrough for VM's. When I use Virt manager to enable 3D acceleration and OpenGL with same exact settings from your video it loads with black screen but it's accessible via ssh. I've tried to start VM with QEMU commands via console with SDL graphics mode with --display sdl,gl=on option and it runs but gives that login error. I tried to use seatd and it is simmilar thing. Also what's interesting is that when running commands such as glxgears on a regular VM with same GPU it runs smoothly or glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" outputs "yes" Maybe there is some trick to make it work on a VM with Nvidia? Thanks in advance
Hi. Thanks for your feedback. But in that case it's difficult for me to help because I cannot reproduce your setup on my computer because I'm using an AMD GPU. Are any other OS running with 3D acceleration in your Qemu setup?
I've specified one VM to use 1050Ti as a passthrough gpu, tried combinations of drivers for host and guest, proprietary and open source and it runs guest with black screen. Also all virtualization settings are enabled in bios. There are talks about nvidia cards for passthrough and 3D acceleration and seems that amd cards work better for that. Maybe it will work if arch is installed bare metal. Maybe it is a nice idea to dual boot arch on windows machine and try it with nvidia card. Anyway thank you for you feedback :) @@mylinuxforwork
If you’re using my dotfiles please check gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotfiles/-/blob/main/waybar/modules.json?ref_type=heads and search for brave and replace on-click with firefox.
Hello iHave been using windows all my life. This keybindings like super comand . What are those. I can guess super is the windows key. What about the cmd . What is it
super big linux noob here so i could just be being dumb but i cant open kitty and when i exit it hangs on the terminal screen that it uses for startup (if that makes any sense) meaining i cant get into the tty either.
thinking it might be that i use a nvidia card bc those are not very compatable with hyprland (or so im told) but i dont have any way of checking bc i cant get to the logs.
Hi. Thanks for using the dotfiles. GTK theme is always tricky. In the next version I will provide a more stable and streamlined setup for the GTK theme. Mid of the week, you can get a preview on my dev branch.
archinstall hangs on time sync for me Waitin n for time sync (timedatectl show) to complete Time syncronization not completing, while you wait - check the docs for workarounds… Anyone knows what’s up with that?
I found out I could skip that part but now I have an issue with keyrings. Something about the iso being an old one. I tried to update them with pacman -Sy archlinux-keyring but nothing. This archlinux-keyring-wkd-sync just won’t start
I tried this on latest arch version and I just get blank screen after I log in, any tips how to get to kitty or to fix it. Would love if you would have this as iso so we could just install it
Please make sure that all packages are up to date. And please try it again a second time to login. Or switch to tty and start Hyprland with command Hyprland. Have noticed several issues with starting Hyprland with display managers. And I will think about an ISO.... I received this wish already several times.
When I restart my computer, the Ly login manager initially appears in the upper left corner of the screen and then centers itself after a few seconds. How can I adjust it to appear directly in the center of the console right from the start?
seems to be an issue with Graphics driver. When I installed arch with Nvidia (proprietary) driver I had the issue as you mentioned. When I tried arch installation with Open source driver, the login screen is centered.
Can anybody point me to how I can update the timezone? I tried adding the timezone line to the config inside of swaybar and nothing changed. I tried looking on bing gpt4 and it told me to add to the hyperland.conf file in the general section but I’m assuming that’s how it would be without the symbolically linked configs because I didn’t see any general section. Thanks to anybody to help me..I can’t believe how easy this was and how much beauty comes from very little effort. I’ve been using it for more than a week , and this is the first time I’ve committed more than an hour to a tiling window manager. I’ve only been using Linux maybe 2 years and I’m still a noob on some of the advanced things.
Hi. This can be a bit tricky if not done correctly during the installation. This is the official Arch page for it. wiki.archlinux.org/title/System_time Or you can create a symbolic link. Please check the beginning of my arch install configuration script gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/archinstall/-/blob/main/2-configuration.sh?ref_type=heads
@@mylinuxforwork yeah that was me being a bonehead. I just re-installed and I must not have saved the time I set the first time. I also installed pulse audio by mistake last time. All is well now, except I’m still using 24 hour clock but I’m getting used to using that so I don’t mind. Thanks again for your contribution
Hi all. Is anybody having issues with power management? I cant seem to run the power manager app. A dialogue box pops saying that Xfce4 power manager is not running, do you want to restart it. However, selecting yes it just appears to loop back to the do you want to run it box. Eventually click no to close. I want to change the time out time as I cant watch a video with having to keeping moving the mouse so it stays awake and not lock. Love ya work .
Hi. Thanks you. In qtile I load it in the autostart.sh gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotfiles/-/blob/main/qtile/autostart.sh?ref_type=heads Not sure if you could load it with exec-once in hyprland.conf?
@mylinuxforwork what should i do for power manager? It doesn't start even when i open it using app launcher. Repeatedely asks to start power manager but doesn't start it
Did something changed? Tody (Oct 10) I installed Hyprland for my family on their laptop and it come up with a blank screen. Everything else worked well but the waybar remain invisible. Using "ps aux | grep waybar" showed that it was running. Any idea?
Hi. I can confirm that something is going wrong in new installations. I only get a grey screen after login without waybar or wallpaper. It seams that some of the main packages have been updated and have a conflict with any of the configuration files. Have you found the issue on your fresh installation?
@@mylinuxforwork Oh ya, I did restart a couple of times. I also killed waybar and launched it again but to no result. Then I installed it on my qemu/vm using the new archinstall (hyprland, ly) and got the same result: a running waybar without a visible bar.
@@mylinuxforwork I tried to reinstall it by another way , I discovered it's not about the key bindings, it's for some reason so slow and heavy ,I am not sure is this from the VM or something else.
Oh yes , I have both installed and still not working only showing black screen for Screens Share. I do can share Applications but not Screen. Still looking what setting I can change to make it work. @@mylinuxforwork
got the solotution , First go to /home/fallen/.config/hypr/conf/ . Then open the file keyboard.conf . @@ilovetren356 ok. The super key is still connected to the host. Please check wiki.hyprland.org/FAQ/#my-vm-doesnt-receive-keybinds-i-have-set-in-hyprland
Hi. Have you installed my dotfiles? Then Super Shift W or Super Ctrl W. If you're using the base installation of Hyprland please check wiki.hyprland.org/Useful-Utilities/Wallpapers/
Hi. Thanks for your feedback. Arch Linux distribution requires the usage of the terminal which can be complicated. But there ate other distributions like EndeavourOS and Manjaro with graphical installers.
I would say, it depends on the quality of a script. And the archinstall is getting better and better and a great option to setup an Arch system fast and easy to use for Arch beginners. Please also check my Arch Install scripts: gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/archinstall 😀
Well if the script made by our RU-vidr is well done and he spent hours and hours to tweak and test, why not using it and save time and enjoy it? People are busy in rl and not everybody is a nerd with tons of free time. I'm an arch user since it came out and capable to do it by myself (like most user here),but why bother?
