How to install roof-to-wall flashing and then counter-flash with a stucco weep or drip screed flashing.
As I’m not a roofer but a plasterer, I went to many stores and then to a roofing company to find this flashing.
Note or tip for all homeowners: You should have this flashing preinstalled by professional roofers.
Just as the roof to the right of this should also have step flashing installed.
It would be best if you did not depend on caulking or tar to stop the rainwater, It will work for about 6 months then fail miserably, and water will enter every wall next to that roof,
Step flashing is also needed if you have a roof with shingles. Finally, don’t forget the mighty important top-to-wall diverter, which removes the bulk of rainwater from pouring down your walls instead of entering your gutters and flowing out harmlessly through the downspouts.
As a rule, folks, if you are unable to hire the craftsman necessary to prep your jobs following code regulations, watching videos, and learning how to do it yourself is Google’s gift to you.
Are you missing the necessary roof flashing for your torch down or shingle roof?
If so, call a roofer before the rainy season.
Let’s take this torch-down roof, for example.
Whoever installed this torch- had no clue about waterproofing, longevity, or the negative impacts of just caulking or applying Henry’s tar at the roof-to-wall junction. Why is that?
Caulking and tar last roughly a few years to possibly five, and in hot areas, perhaps they melt in less than a year.
This is why metal is used.
This calls for a 4 x 4 slanted flashing before the torch down the roof to be code-compliant. Why? Good question, A roof lasts about 30 years; stucco lasts hundreds, just like concrete.
Thus most will replace roofs and, if not appropriately flashed, will have to break out the plaster.
And no one wants to break out stucco, so have your flashing already appropriately installed.
With tar or caulking at best, your roof may fail at the roof-to-wall seam and allow rainwater within the first five years. In time they will leak.
This is why it’s necessary to hire licensed roofers.
Now, if you look at the gable roof above the front porch, it was completed, no doubt, by the same person who did the torch down the roof.
Why do I come to this conclusion? There’s no step flashing or even tar or caulking?
How can that be waterproofed even though it’s a new roof? It can’t be as is.
Step flashing at this point is difficult as the shingles are already in position, and the sealant on the rear of the shingle will now be compromised.
Last tip, folks, if you decide to have your home stuccoed, make all the required adjustments from the craftsman in a particular field, such as a roofer to re-roof or correct what is there.
The same applies to plumbing issues, especially electrical outlets, as these need to be installed so they protrude one inch past the existing wall; rain will find its way in these openings or cause a short.
One may also need new downspouts adjusted as stucco an inch thick may hinder the original downspout seams.
Thus in this video, I’m trying to help the homeowner improvise in installing some roof-to-wall stucco flashing.
Then counter with our weep or drip screed to properly watertight a home.
There are many ways to flash a roof to a wall area to prepare it for stucco.
We try and come up with the best solution among the alternatives available.
The absolute best way to flash a roof is to hire a roofer.
Jason and I think you will enjoy and learn much about roofing flashing or saddles in the video below. And protect your number one investment.

Another way that I think is much easier is to simply pry away the base of the wood sheathing & slip your 90 degree flashing under it. Then nail a 1x4 or 1x6 pressure treated trim board over the flashing with black jack or asphalt sealant behind the 1x4 - and then caulk the top edge of the 1x4 or 1x6. Its less work and looks better with a trim board, whether it's a side roof or head wall situation. I don't prefer to leave silver flashing exposed on nicer homes. It looks tacky. Trim board with top edge caulking always looks better with clean lines.
@stephendee7839
@stephendee7839 3 года назад
@@JudgeBuster I think that I understand you. I also think that your approach would provide a pathway for dripping rain water to wick along the trim underneath the sheathing, rot the bottom of the sheathing and promote mold growth behind the sheathing. I don't think that that creating any sort of systemic approach for water intrusion is a great idea for roofing or siding. But maybe you meant someething different by "wood sheathing" and just used the wrong words to decribe something that doesn't matter if it rots out in a few years?

Hey Gilbert, I have done a few balconies this way. Mainly a fella will install a standard 4 x 4 inch, roof to wall flashing and then apply a membrane. There are about 20 different membranes I see used often enough. Then we can counter flash with a drip or weep screed designed for stucco or if necessary attach a Z flashing. Have a good evening. I have that problem. Had a room added for my sick mother and the oom leaks. They put on a flat roof and it leaked first rain. Can't contact them. Had it re-roofed twice and still leaks at the seem where it was added. I wish you lived near San Bernardino, CA. My neighbor told me they probably didn't put flashing so maybe I'll try too I myself. I also ordered some sashco roof sealant. So after nailing he flashing, did I understand that their needs to be paper and plaster?

Howdy Thomas, good question. Since we were planning on applying a color coat finish, a weep screed was not necessary. I could have used one to counter the L Flashing. However I preferred to use a Z flashing so that the with high winds the rain would not be a problem, where does any moisture that penetrates the cement plaster go? Excellent question. It flows out through the bottom the same as it's absorbed through the porous color finish Gravity with air evaporates this moister. Now if this were to be a two coat cement plastering job with a painted surface, it would have been a better desion to simply drop the weep screed directly on the L Flashing. Cheers! Hey Kirk I’m trying to understand how to do this troubleshooting on my own since I want to become a general contractor one day. Watching your videos has helped immensely! Do you mind explaining what exactly it is about the drip screeds that makes it more work and requires chipping out the stucco to place a new roof in the future? Wouldn’t the z flashing require the same thing (chipping out stucco)? Thank again for all the knowledge you share with us!

Good evening Arlen, like the one in this video, old homes are a real drag to stucco, especially when so much has been done incorrectly and without permits. This one required so much improvising I was sorry I took it on. Most of the necessary steps before stucco were not completed by the owner or a general contractor. Weep screeds..... Back in 1975, it became code to start installing weep or drip screeds for three reasons. One, to stop the stucco from touching the dirt or ground. Two, more importantly, to give the walls an expansion joint, and three, to provide us with plasterers something to stop at. We didn't start installing them until about 1980. FYI, my own home had the stucco touching the ground. I didn't lose any sleep over it as I knew why. I feel it's a waste of time to break out existing stucco to add a weep screed personally. Sure, you will get a few more cracks and some cases, buckling, but usually, at that stage, if you tear into a wall to attach screeds, you open a can of worms.
