I'm proud someone has done Windows XP on Haswell. Now we need the Ultimate Windows XP machine with i7-4790K and GTX 980 Ti (maybe even a Titan X). ;)

i have a 4820k at 4.7ghz and gtx 980ti classified running winxp with no issues at all and all devices detected , potentially i could run the 4960x or an unlocked xeon like the 1660 v2 (6core) or 1680v2 (8core). I have heard that not all titan x maxwells work under xp and it depends on the firmware revision.

Haswell is great - and with AVX2 and FMA3 support it's right up there with the latest i9-9900K in terms of instruction set support. Another neat thing about Haswell is that the L1 cache is twice as fast per clock as Sandy/Ivy Bridge (Intel had to do that, in order to keep the SIMD units properly fed when running AVX2 optimized code). However, the stupid-fast L1 also makes Haswell great for pushing really high frame rates in older XP-era games, where single-threaded CPU performance is the primary bottleneck. 500 fps in Far Cry, anyone?

@philscomputerlab

The boards are actually quite affordable, but the CPUs are not >
@ZetaRidge7
@ZetaRidge7 5 лет назад
True that. In Canada, the cheapest I could afford a motherboard (a refurbished/used one) that costs 50-60 Canadian dollars while most CPUs themselves ranges from the pentium ones costing 60-70 at the cheapest to the most expensive yet affordable for value ones such as the i5 and i7 for $120 or less to over $200 respectively. Thankfully I've built my haswell-based gaming PCs back when they were fairly cheap to get (prior to the release of Skylake).

If you're already versed with slipstreaming for a Windows XP iso file, you should consider integrating Dibya's alternative ram patch, which allows the kernel to actually support PAE as intended and elevates Windows xp 32bit to support up to 128gb of installed memory. At that point, the only thing XP can't install to, based on inference, is nvme ssd's. It's my understanding that evga even made custom Windows xp drivers for their x299 Dark motherboard. Couple that with nvidia's latest driver supporting the Titan Z in the OS, it is then possible to make a ludicrously expensive, overkill machine to run Windows XP on. 😀👌
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 2 года назад
Some XP drivers may not like PAE though and have a risk of not working properly somehow. Usually exhibits in the form of BSODs. Honestly, it's really damn neat to run such an overkill system on XP, but I think it would be much better idea in the end to consider using 7.

Intel's HD Graphics 4000 series isn't bad at all whatsoever. I have the 'HDG4600' powered by an i7-4700MQ on my laptop and I can play all of my older games at high-maximum quality from 2006 and back. 2007-2009 and a few modern titles do need some tweaking (shadows, quality, etc) but most of the time I just drop the resolution enough (to an extent; 1280x768 or so) and keep everything on max when possible. It all of course depends on the game. Crysis runs surprisingly well at 1280x768 with everything at high or very high except for shadows and shaders; I keep those at medium. Fully playable and enjoyable. Really awesome and it suits my general everyday use.

If you get interested someday, VMWare hypervisor has a very decent virtual video adapter which can accelerate using your GPU (that's not a passthrough). If you buff the ram to 6-8 gigs and launch the same XP workplace in VM (drivers for emulated hardware come on mountable iso for everything since w95) that could be an interesting Thursday bonus video. If somebody does not have a room for dedicated retro-gaming rig, that could help. Why this exact software? Because Virtualbox emulates Geforce2-tier GPU and fresh Hyper-V is buggy on anything pre-Skylake, while VMWare Player is free and has a decent GPU emulation.

@@y4si0 I'll back you up on this. Passmark and similar sites like UserBenchmark and CPUBoss are dismissed because people desire game-specific benchmarks, but that's impractical when considering years worth of CPUs (or GPUs). Many of them are never benchmarked at all, like the cheap E3 Xeons that most motherboards take but don't advertise. Damn... Well can you offer me some advice for installing drivers on Win 9X? I'm planning on building one this year, and I know I'll be stuck in driver hell. I haven't picked-out a motherboard yet, but I'm thinking of getting either a Pentium 4, or a Pentium 4 Extreme to go with it though I do have a couple Slot 1 Pentium 3s if the P4 is too much.

May I ask, why do people avoid me whenever I ask for some retro driver advice? Is this offensive in the PC community, am I doing something wrong, or is it equivalent to pirating? Either way, you should tell me about, so I don't ask the same questions.

@@thepuzzlemaster64 Honestly, there's very little advice that can be given really. You have to know exactly what part you have and then go googling for it. A lot of the time you can go to the company that made the part and find drivers there. Sometimes I've had to look up specific chips on cards, look up hardware ID's, or use the wayback machine to find info I've needed on websites that don't exist anymore to find drivers for them. Back in the day I used to have cd's I made full of nothing but drivers. lol

@@ronpaynter7054 Thank you for the little advice that you've given. I did have an idea as to how to get these driver, but I wasn't sure if there was a trick to download drivers faster (apart from those shady driver websites). Even a computer repair book that I own suggested some pretty weird websites to get boot drivers and boot disks, so I appreciate some conformation that what I was doing was the right thing. Although I do have one last question: Are there some companies that don't keep Win9X drivers that I should be aware of when building my Win9X PC?

Hi Phil, Have you experienced any issues with the Haswell (1150 platform) regarding Win XP and games ? I have a HTPC where I use a Broadwell i5-5675C (also socket 1150) which has the superb onboard Iris Pro 6200 iGPU. I am tempted to try this as an XP Gaming rig. Should be able to handle all XP games at max settings if I can get it to work (besides Crysis) :)

Graphics driver is going to the issue I think. You might have to use a dedicated GPU...

Sure would be cool if the tool could torrent just the specific drivers you need and download them for you during the install. I wonder if that's possible.

Yes, Intel Core i9 10900K works. Remember cpu's are x86 architecture so it should never be a problem to install any os with them.

Hmmm I can't get most of the drivers to install on my new Windows XP install with Snappy Drivers, it's on an HP Z230 SFF with an i7-4790 pretty much the same system as an HP G1 800 so it should work.. I get the following message.. I managed to install an old chipset driver manually but I'm struggling with the rest. "The procedure entry point RegDeleteTreeA could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.dll "

So I found the solution, there was an error with the Snappy Drivers database trying to install chipsets for a later system, I had to find an old version of Snappy Drivers Origin and it all worked well... very annoying error.. I spent all day trying to sort it..

When prompted by XP Setup to press F6, try pressing F5 (or F7) quickly. Sometimes you can work around this error, but sometimes it just crashes later on...

I found out a way how to update a bios on a motherboard that can be only updated by a floppy disk Grabany IDE HDD and format it as FAT32 and you can then put the bios onto it and then use it to install it , it works and it wasnt even mention in the manual

you can create a windows 98 usb boot disk using "hp usb format tool", look it up the steps are easy and once you're done you have a portable dos environment that can boot on any modern machine

Depends on the XP really, XP 32bit it can make use of the CPU pretty darn good but anything over 4gb of ram it's not going to touch. XP x64 edition AKA Windows Server 2003 Fisher Price Skin Edition could take full advantage of a fairly modern system. Tthe GPU would be limited on either to a first gen GCN (7000 series and R5-r9 200 series cards) or GTX 700 series and older due to drivers not existing officially.
