Install WordPress in a subdirectory of an existing site - WordPress Sub-directory | WP Learning Lab
Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Security Checklist: bit.ly/10point-...
A WordPress subdirectory install is done in a very similar way to installing WordPress in a domain root. We just install to a different folder.
First thing is to create the subdirectory. Inside cpanel, open the File Manager.
Open the root folder of the website where you want to add the subdirectory install. Inside that folder create a new folder that is the name of the subdirectory you want.
For example, if you wanted a new site at www.yourdomain.com/members
The folder you make needs to be called members.
Your subdirectory has been created. It's that easy.
That is where we'll upload fresh WordPress files in a few minutes.
But first, we're going to create the database.
To do this, go back to your cPanel and open the MySQL databases page. Enter a name for a new database and create it. Make note of the database name because we'll need in a minute.
Next, and on that same page, create a new user and give them a unique password or use the password generator.
Make note of the username and the password.
Now scroll to the bottom of the MySQL database page and link to the user to the database and give them all privileges.
The database is now created and ready.
Now we'll upload new WordPress files.
Go to WordPress.org and download the latest WordPress installation package to your computer.
Next, log into the File Manager in hosting account and open the root of your website. Inside that root folder should be a folder with the same name as you chose for you subdirectory. Open that folder.
It should be empty.
Now, click on the Upload link in the menu system. It will open a new window or a new tab. Click the button to open the file browser and choose the WordPress files you just downloaded.
It should complete very quickly. Once complete, you can close the upload window/tab.
Now hit Reload in the File Manager. A zip file should appear. Click it to highlight it and then click on Extract in the top menu.
Click on Ok on the dialog box that pops up to begin extraction.
Click on Reload again so you can see all the files.
Click on the wp-config.php file and then click on Code Editor to open that file in the editor.
Find the section where the database credentials go and copy the info from your database in there. Click on Save Changes when you're done.
Now, open your subdirectory in a new browser tab or window. You should be presented with the familiar WordPress installation screen.
Install WordPress as normal.
Once installed you can log in and now you have a WordPress site in a subdirectory. Pretty sweet!
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

Very nice and useful video but what if I want to share the same database (and some posts) between the main site and the one(s) that I install in a sub-directory?
@wplearninglab
@wplearninglab 3 года назад
Hey Naser, you can connect your sub-directory sites to the main database. Just connect the same database in the wp-config file. You should be able to use the same MySQL user or you can create a separate MySQL user. The only draw back is the sites will be identical and any change made on any of the sites will be reflected on all the sites since they're all connected to the same database.

Hello again, I know that this is not a Q&A platform but I hope you may help me. I tried installing several WordPress instances in separate sub-directories and as you said I tried to connect them to the same database. Everything went right but I had a problem, I needed to use different table prefixes which resulted in repeated tables only with differenet names (caused by the prefixes) . This is not want I indented to do as I needed several wordpress sites sharing the data of the same database and same tables. For more information, I want to use this method to implement a multi-language website manually and (not by using plugins, for example, I want to use a custome field for French content of a post and show it for French version). Do you have any idea which can help me? Thanks.

ok so i have moved my subdomain to a subdirectory and I have the following issue. I have 2 wordpress sites and i have to create 2 sitemaps. I have control over my sitemaps and I have added the sitemap of the subfoloder domain to my mainsite sitemap but is there a different way to do it? There is not much discussion of the need to control the sitemap of the new subdirectory domain and this is a huge issue. Is there a way to have the main domain index the subdirectory domain or is what im doing the way it should be done. The way i did it works but not without supervision and plugins that give full control to permalinks and sitemap.xml creation. Canonicalization has been an issue also in having a subdirectory website. By default the main site will not index the subdirectory site correctly or I dont know how to canonicalize a redirect correctly to the subdirectory if that is how its done? Thanks

How could I keep the same content (than my current worpress website), features, posts, and design in the new subdirectory worpress site I will create? Thanks for your help!
@wplearninglab
@wplearninglab 7 лет назад
Hi Yohan, To keep the same content you'd just replicate the site into the sub-directory. That will ensure the theme is the same and posts and everything else are the same. The challenge will be if you want to post content to the site in the root and have that content auto-published to the site in the sub-directory. I do have to warn you that Google isn't a big fan of duplicate content, which is what you'll be creating by having identical copies of your site in the root and in the sub-directory.

+Upsite Worth A site in a subdirectory is a separate sure from the one in main domain. So you have either create a new Google analytics profile for it or you have to use cross-domain tracking to have the subdomain traffic appear in the main site's GA profile. Here's more info on that: support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034342?hl=en The / in Google analytics refers to the homepage.

@@wplearninglab love your videos! I was looking for a solution to have my blog as a sub folder on my site but wanted to use a different theme than the rest of my site. I saw your video on the multiple theme plugin - but that seemed too sloppy and too much management needed. That's when I found this video here and oh boy! This option is so much better than the multiple theme plugin option. I love how it keeps things clean and more easily manageable with it's own WP installation

There's pros and cons for both, but a subdomain is much cleaner :) Im happy you found a solution that works for you.

Hey, is it possible to configure or connect the main and sub-folder domains to use the same clients' login credentials and have accept to both contents regardless of where the client login?
@wplearninglab
@wplearninglab 6 лет назад
Good question! If I understand correctly the site on the main domain and the subdomain will be identical in users, content and design. Is that correct?
@Pexstral

Correct. Registered/login members to the main domain should be able to migrate and auto access subdomain content without having to reenter their login credential.

How shall I install WordPress in a subdirectory of an existing site created by myself and has hosting services out of Wordpress? Do you have any idea?

Great information! Does this affect your GTmetrix score?
@wplearninglab
@wplearninglab 5 лет назад
It won't affect the speed of the main site because it's a separate site. The only time this would be a problem for speed is if you have so much traffic that your hosting account slows down. Then you need to upgrade your hosting. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the tutorial! I followed the steps and everything seemed to go well.. but when I try to access the new URL, it says 'The file 'wp-config.php' already exists. If you need to reset any of the configuration items in this file, please delete it first. Try installing' (if I click on try installing it says, WP is already installed and I can use my new credentials to login yo the dashboard). What am I doing wrong?

Hi Anita, I'm not sure. I haven't encountered that issue before. You could check your files to make sure you don't have a duplicate wp-config.php file. Also try clearing your browser cache and cookies and try accessing the URL from a different browser.

May I install Wordpress on a subdirectory like sitename/development and move it after all style changes to the root directory by copy&paste or do I have to install it again in the root directory of my server?
