Yes, it is possible to install these yourself, but if it's your first time I would recommend starting on a lower end guitar not your "best" guitar like I did. It turned out fine, but I put a blemish in the end of the guitar when I drilled the hole. Use high speed but push very gently and softly when drilling through hard wood so it doesn't bind, causing some damaged wood at the edge of the hole. The other thing they don't tell you is the process of getting the putty off the pickup. Maybe they expected me to leave it on as they gave me enough to use a different ball of putty for each pickup. But, I didn't leave it on. I had to rub it off and it didn't come clean, obviously. The one piece of putty worked for all three pickup heads. Also, I had to use a hack saw and very carefully cut off about 3/16ths of an inch from the barrel that covers the pick up connection where the wires run into the jack in order to have enough reach on my Martin 000-16. Just sayin'. This pick up is so good and so inexpensive that it's worth paying someone to install this if you're uncomfortable at all. I worked as a handyman all my life before I retired, so my pride wouldn't let me pay someone else to do this. The only thing I would do differently after having done it, I would get a second pickup and put the first one on my $500 Alvarez.

Excellent installation guide. Just followed it to the letter (except for using a 31/64 drill bit). Even the new 20mm pickups had enough room on my Gibson Gospel. Worked on first try and sounds great after working around the feedback sensitivity. Thanks, Journey.

Just installed the EP001K in my old beat camp guitar. Oh man do I love these. For a knock off squire I bought specifically for camping, these really went well. I run a medium gauge string and have a tight cross piece at the bridge, but they went in without too much wrangling and the strap button plug in is fantastic. I control tone through the pedal board so straight at em' didn't affect me. Love the sound guy's! Will recommend.

I just installed mine. The sound quality is really great on my Epiphone AJ45. I will say, it was tricky to install, the end pin block was so thick that even with the inside nut backed all the way out I barely had enough to grab onto. I suspect this may be problematic in the future, but we'll see. The mini jack from the transducers into the input jack was badly bent, about 20°, but it worked fine so I went ahead and installed it anyway.

just installed one of these, had a lot of problems as the jack's threaded part was not long enough to fit through the end block with enough left to fit the outer parts, I had to leave off the inner jack shield cover as with it on it had to be screwed so far back the mini jack would not click in, also couldn't fit the passive volume control as the bracing around the sound hole didn't leave enough space, this was a Sigma DR 28 Martin be warned,

I have a Wurlitzer electric piano that I took the electronics out of and put in long Helpenstill custom wound pickups humbuckers which work pretty well but it would be less cumbersome to have maybe 4 piezos glued to the heavy metal bracket that the tines are attached to. I experimented with a couple of piezos I have and it seems to work excepty on the low notes below an octave below middle C. Do you have a pickup that's optomized for bass?

Hi, I just installed this pickup in my seagull and it sounds awesome, especially at this price point. However, the two high strings (e and B) sound louder than the other strings. Is there a way to correct that ? Maybe by placing the high pickup one centimeter more towards the neck ?

Sorry for the late reply! The EPS001 is meant to upgrade our original EP-001s to active pickups, which is why you need the original pickups too.

Tip: do NOT replace your original strap button. Instead drill a new hole about 6” lower down the bout for the new pickup jack (like an electric guitar). This way you can use your original strap button for a strap which is far superior.

@David Stadium Heights The strap lug in mine was just a hair bigger when I installed these. Most common are lug with drilled hole for screw to hit inner strength block where it normally would set. Installing the jack lug provided you have to drill that block. If your lock strap won't fit it, just move original far enough forward, aft or above. You'll have to leave clearance for cord or transmitter to amp. But, you'll see how wide and tall the block is and judge on you strongest hold point.

The EP004K has 4 piezo elements and is for a classical guitar. Both sound the same, they're just meant to accommodate different bridge widths and guitar bracing :)

The text that accompanies the video is incorrect. What they are calling the pick up is actually the output jack; the sound is picked up by the piezos that are glued on the bridge.

These are almost twice the size of K&K mini's. They dont fit many guitars with x bracing. I found that out the hard way. Their customer service is non-exsistent.

I'm sorry to hear you had this issue, Mark! We do make a note on the product page that it may be slightly too big for narrow x-braced guitars like the Martin Jr or Taylor GS Mini. Fortunately, these pickups still work great even if they have to hang over the edge a little bit. I wasn't able to find any customer service requests under your name, but if you reach out to us at info@journeyinstruments.com we'll be happy to help further!

@@journeyinstruments I have an 88 Martin Sigma and while installing the transducers with superglue I discovered I was out of room. When I try to peel them off I ruined one of them so I emailed you to see if I could buy one and to ask if they would still work good behind the string pegs. I got no answer but in the meantime I soldered a 12 cm as a replacement. I don't know if they will work but I'm trying them with double face tape. The plastic template you provide for installation is too flimsy so I've made a template to install them all together. Thanks for at least replying.

ATTENTION ALL GUITARISTS: Although this is a great instructional video, THERE IS A MUCH BETTER WAY TO INSTALL THIS SYSTEM ( or the K&K Pure Mini, both install the same way ) !!! PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ON HOW TO NOT ONLY DO A MORE PRECISE INSTALLATION, BUT IT'S ALSO MUCH QUICKER & EASIER!!! >>>> Do NOT use that thin, wimpy mounting jig to glue the 3 transducers in place. Instead, use an old credit/debit card ( or any material that is about the same size & thickness as a debit/credit card ) .....you can also use one of those "fake" credit cards you get in the mail for credit card offers. If the card has the 16 digit number embossed onto the card ( the 16 digit numbers are stamped & raised, not flush ) then simply flip the card so that the embossed 16 digit numbers are FACING DOWN. ( When upright, the embossed numbers won't allow a flat/flush fit.......flipping the card upside down DOES allows a flat/flush fitment. ) Next, position the card so that you can carefully mark ONLY THE BRIDGE PIN HOLES FOR EACH OUTER E-STRING on the debit card using a black Sharpie marker. Then, using the correct size drill bit and a block of wood, lay the card on the block of wood & carefully drill the 2 holes for the exact position of each E-string. THIS NOW ENABLES YOU TO USE 2 GOLF TEE'S INSTEAD OF THAT THIN TOOTHPICK. (more on this later here ) Next: position the card just BELOW the guitar's bridge & use the black Sharpie to mark the other 4 guitar strings. You will NOT need to drill these marks, instead, these marks will be used to locate the supplied putty to position each transducer properly. Next, determine the position of your saddle and carefully draw a line on the card to represent the position of the guitar's saddle. Take your time with these previous steps, it's not that difficult, but get it right. Once all of this is done, (should only take a few minutes ) you now have A MUCH IMPROVED MOUNTING JIG which will allow you to use TWO golf tees. ( If ya don't have an extra golf tee, go borrow or buy one. ) Do NOT use the toothpick that is provided, instead, use TWO golf tees. These 2 golf tee's will be used the same way, only each golf tee WILL ENSURE A PRECISE FITMENT LOCATION IN THE BRIDGE PIN HOLES FOR BOTH OUTER E-STRINGS for your custom mounting jig you just made using an old debit/credit card. For some guitars, you may have to use scissors to cut 2 of the corners off the debit/credit card to clear X-bracing inside the guitar. Do a trial run with only the card to see if it clears any X-bracing before any installation begins. Now that your new custom jig is ready to use, follow the same instructions using the mounting/locating putty, but the advantage is you can now INSTALL ALL 3 TRANSDUCERS AT THE SAME TIME!!! ...........WARNING>>> BEFORE INSTALLATION, ALWAYS USE A LIGHT AND A MIRROR INSIDE YOUR GUITAR TO MAKE SURE YOUR BRIDGE PLATE IS CLEAN & FREE OF ANY DEBRIS, SAWDUST, OR SPLINTERS THAT MAY BE PRESENT FROM WHEN THE GUITAR WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT!!! You want the bridge plate to be clean, so the Super Glue/Gorilla Glue GEL has a clean surface to adhere to. The other added advantages of using this custom-made jig, is that you can now use all 4 fingers to press the card with all 3 transducers into place with much better control. Also: this improved custom mounting jig ensures that all 3 transducers are perfectly located. ALWAYS make a few "practice/dry runs" to properly locate BOTH golf tee's, before actually gluing the transducers into place. This improved, custom made jig actually makes this job MUCH faster, easier, and more precise!!! I used this method to install the Journey Tek pickup system in all 4 of my acoustic guitars at once, in a fraction of the time. IT WORKED GREAT!!! IT WILL WORK GREAT FOR YOU TOO, TRUST ME!!!
