We're installing a 20-foot culvert pipe over a creek bed. In this video, I'll show you how to install a culvert pipe. This will work whether it's over a driveway, creek, pond dam or whatever. This pipe is corrugated plastic. It's 24 inches in diameter and 20-feet long. I'm bridging my creek with this pipe.

I'm putting in a 18" x 20' metal pipe this morning. Just wanted to make sure it's done right because it's a different situation every project. Then I'm expanding the road from 10' to 18' to move in a mobile home. I'm also clearing, smoothing and leveling the mobile home site. Whole projects about an acre. Thanks for the video.

The amount of weight the culvert will bear is related to how much “give” there is on the sides when something heavy rolls over the top trying to flatten it. That is why it is important to compact the fill on the sides of the culvert as much as possible during installation.

I put crushed concrete around my pipe. maybe I should have stuck with dirt instead? I heard the crushed concrete was supposed to be stronger.

Hope it works out for you, we have to install (replace) several this year and will probably be using some geocloth and concrete or rip rap the ends. Some years ago the RR made us remove a RR crossing and paid for a culvert off the highway. They sent out a hydrologist, engineer and professional construction company and $6,000 later had a culvert that blew out twice behore they got it right. MODOT paid for it fortunately. Sometimes packing the sides with each layer works. Sure would appreciate how yours works out.

My plan is to install rip rap this summer. It has eroded a little due to some heavy rain a few weeks ago. Not bad... but enough for me to try to get a handle on it

That looks like a double wall, which is always what you want to use for a culvert pipe, our entire driveway uses those pipes and we've had 40 to 60,000 lb Semis cross them with no problems. It should work just fine for you :-) Thanks

Wow... that's good to know, Kap. How much dirt do you have on top of your pipe? It's my understanding that at least 12" is required but if the dirt is thicker it will hold more weight. I'll have to do something on each end to prevent erosion... probably large rocks or concrete. Thanks! alan homesteadadvisor.com/

Hi, east Texas here, around here we use sand as a base around the culvert and then top it with caliche which will give it a really hard top coat and alot of stability in heavy rains. Then we can put gravel on top of that for asthetics. I am just wondering how yours performed in the wet season, it seems like it would be just a pile of mud until the grass got fully rooted.

It did pretty well considering the huge amount of water that comes through there when it's wet. There is some eroding at both ends of the pipe, but all in all not too bad.

What the pipe will carry depends on how tight its packed in and how much material is above it. The more the better. Installed right youd be surprised how much they will carry. We use those pipes from 10in on up in diamiter up here in north maine woods........ive hauled many 200,000lbs+ loads over many pipes in my offroad log hauling years......

So@@BIGALTX im pretty sure for the waight you say you will pass over that pipe you should be more then all set. Just look at the pipe from a end as somthing big goes over it if you are worried. The only thing you could of done any better with qhat you had was pack down each side paralell to the pipe on both sides of it. But it looks to me you got it in well. Being only clay and brown dirt i wouldnt roll my loads over it right away but after a year of running over that and packing it down........it should be pretty solid. Almost like cement.

Really not much to show. I just drove over it many many times with the tractor as I laid down a few inches of dirt. I wound up redoing my dam and spillway completely, so this culvert went into a creek upstream from this pond. Still in service, but not in this location.

I am by no means an expert on this. But, I think you any pipe you buy will have a load capacity listed at their website, or somewhere. As I understand it, 18 inches or more of soil on top of a pipe is sufficient… But… Do your own research. Again, I am not an expert on this.

That is the best pipe ever.... duel wall HDEPE .... it will outlast you and I together.... that green line goes on top if you were to lay more than 1 to sight down for straightness... I always like to set my pipes a little high so there is room for silting

your problem will be the water will erode the dirt around the culvert (same problem I have but with gravel) in the future you could pour concrete around the culvert if the setup is permanent. :)

Do you have any pictures of heavy water flow through this? How is it holding up with just dirt on the sides vs the plastic wings or riprap? Thank you!

It’s holding up well, but there IS some erosion. I will have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get too bad. I have had water high enough that it was coming over the dirt that’s on top of it. So yes, it is had a lot of water coming through it and by it.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Hope you never get a grass fire because the heat will cause it to melt and actually catch fire. And oh yes, will it burn! Waiting to see how it lasts during your first big rain event. You very well may find your culvert floating in the pond. Plastic pipe floats.

I had an AMAZING 6" in one night and the water was running OVER the dam. The culvert held up really well. I don't see any difference in it. I DO need to put some rocks around the entrance and exit of the pipe to stop erosion.

Whole place burning down but your steel culvertt will be fine..lol. Steel and plastic culverts will both rise up if not installed properly. Plastic is definitely preferred unless you enjoy replacing rusted/collapsed culverts.

Thanks for the video. I have to install a culvert to cross over a part time creek at my land so I can drive my Kubota over it. It weighs around 10K lbs. Curious why you didn't go with a galvanized steel pipe. Aren't they stronger than the plastic ones?

I don't really know if metal is stronger... but this one (some have commented here) will support tens of thousands of pounds. Read some of the comments here and make up your own mind. I like the plastic because it will never rust out. Galvanized eventually will, though it would be a long time.

No, as I understand it it’s just not necessary. You need to put a layer of dirt on top to disperse the weight of vehicles going over it, but gravel is unnecessary.

I am so glad you posted this video. I have been watching your videos for years and have gotten lots of good prepping information from you, and you are the perfect person to advise me on what I have been thinking about doing; I have been thinking about purchasing a culvert like the one you used and burying it in the ground with 5 gallon buckets of long term food storage inside. The buckets would contain 5 gallons of grain properly packaged inside mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. I think I saw that you can purchase end caps for those culverts which I would use to seal them up so water could not leak inside. What do you think of this idea? Please advise! I'm trying to envision using this type of pipe for a "cache" like you're talking about. So... (In my opinion) if you're going to bury a food storage, you'll want to bury it several feet deep... BUT you'll also want to be able to get to it when you need it. If it's 4 or 5 feet deep, the temp will be pretty much constant, and would store your food longer. However, burying a pipe like this that deep would mean a LOT of trouble digging it up when it's time. I don't think this type of pipe comes with any way to cap them off. If it were ME (though i've never done it...yet) I would try to find an old freezer and bury it. You could just bury it with the top level with the ground and put straw or something like that on top. The straw would help insulate the freezer box on top. Also (and this is the best part) since the freezer is insulated on all 4 sides, it would probably be just as good as if you buried it real deep. When you need the food storage, you just remove the straw (and whatever you have on top to hide it) remove the food and re-conceal it. I've always wanted to do this, but haven't yet... but I PROBABLY WILL! You can find broken freezers (or refrigerators) on Craigslist or on the side of the road a lot. Also, look at junk yards, or appliance repair shops. Hope that helps. alan homesteadadvisor.com/

So how pricey is doing something like this? We are interested in a piece of property that has a creek we would have to pass to get to the property. Not sure how big will have to go back and measure out the distance. Just wondering how expensive its gonna be. And as the new owner are we responsible for finding out who we talk to for a permit? Or what ever we might need to build one.

The pipe (2' diameter by 20' long) was $450 The dirt was free, as I had a dry pond to dig from.

Depends on how expensive truck loads of dirt are (if you have to buy it). If you have your own equipment and a place to dig dirt, your only expense would be the pipe.

I did all the labor, and used dirt I had on the farm. Not sure but I think the pipe (24” X 20’) was around $500. I just looked and it’s $972 now. Wow!!
