Installing A (400 Watt) Solar System In The Super C RV!

In this episode of Wandering Wagners we finally installed solar on our 2020 Nexus Wraith Super C RV! We have been wanting to do this for quite some time now, and finally decided to go for it since we recently upgraded our fridge to a 12v fridge and wanted to have some solar to supplement powering it while we were traveling and dry/boondocking.
We are going with a smaller system because we have an on board generator and only need the solar for a few things so we are going with a 400Watt panel install.
We bought the panels from ‪@RichSolarTalk‬ on Amazon.
200W Rich Solar Panels: amzn.to/3UEFcO4
As mentioned, we aren't solar experts so if you'd like to talk to one, we recommend Ed Jones at ‪@offgridps‬ . We visited his shop last year and were really impressed and his business is booming!
First we tested the panels outside to make sure they are working before installing them. They are working great so we put on the brackets and up on the roof they went. Drilling holes in the roof was pretty nerve wracking! Luckily no wrong holes were made. Ran the wires through the closet and over to the batteries. Be sure to have plenty of Dicor Lap Sealant on hand just in case haha!
The install went smooth and we were able to test it and everything seemed to be working correctly. It may not be the prettiest installs, but luckily almost no one sees the roof LOL

400 watts is great for a weekend package. When we camp host in Colorado, we put another 400 watts on the ground with a second charge controller to compensate for shading on the Camp Host sit. Between rainstorms, it is good to collect a few amp-hours whenever possible as the sun peaks out. But for weekenders and vacationers, 400 watts is just fine. -Dave

@UltimateAnarchy
@UltimateAnarchy Год назад
FYI Mike... You will see little to no wattage coming in on the Victron app if your batteries are full. You'll only see the amount you're replacing as it is being used; likely by the fridge. 40w is about right for that fridge at "idle". The solar panels do not continuously put out their full-rated power if there's nowhere for that power to "go". Also, even on a perfectly sunny day, if the sun is at the angle it was in your video you'll be lucky to get 10% of the rated power. You should consider installing a tilting kit so you can angle the panels toward the sun. Lastly, do not ever connect your panels to the controller if you do not have a battery connected to the controller as this can burn up the controller since there is nowhere for that power to go. Always have a disconnect between the panels and the controllers for when you need to remove or disconnect the batteries.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
We considered the tilt kit but since we only need solar when traveling for the fridge etc it wasn't that big of a deal for the time being

Great that you upgraded to 400 and your new batteries, it should work great. I can tell you from experience that our Renegade Valencia has 525 (3 175 Watts) and just one 8D AGM battery powering our 3,000 watt inverter and it goes all day with fridge running and our star link. Can also run the fridge all night with the some night lights left on. I was thinking I was going to upgrade to lithium, but happy so far with the one AGM. Thanks you for taking the time to make your videos. Alway fun to watch you two.

I ran the power cables for the 600 wats of solar through the fridge vent. Then through the floor and out the bottom. Saves a few holes in the roof. I also mounted the solar controller inside the top step.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
Nice! We considered doing that as well but went this route.
@OldManandtheSuperC
@OldManandtheSuperC Год назад
Thanks for the info on how you routed the cables. I’ve thought about just coming down through the cabinets in the bedroom of our Wraith 34W, putting the lithium batteries and charge controller where the lower drawer is, the routing through the pass through below to the inverter and 12v feed to the breaker panel. Other option was to come down through the wall,between the bathroom and bedroom. There’s just not a good place to put the batteries though. Another choice is under the Dinette seat but that puts the batteries a long way from the inverter. Not a problem for 1000w but would need a giant cable to run that far for 3000 watts. With the Onan 8000 I just don’t see needing a big inverter and giant battery bank.

@WanderingWagners Год назад
so far this way has been working out great for us. There's a lot of options on how to route everything depending on your setup. In the next video we will be installing the lithium battery we recently received as well

I just bought two 200 watt solar panels by Renogy. Also got a kit with a charge controller & 2000 watt inverter for my small ClassC. I'm in the process of learning about this. I'm worried that maybe the inverter might be too much? I plan on buying a LifePo4 lithium 200 watt battery to support the solar. One 200 watt battery will take up less space than two 100 watt ones. Same thinking for the 200 watt solar panels for fitting on the roof of a 24' classC. It's still all pretty confusing to me! But I may be going off grid for awhile. Thx for sharing your video! 👍

Our new one comes pre wired for solar, I decide to use the solar on the side to maintain the batteries in the storage yard, and not get the go power 190 system or something like it as I did not feel I would get enough use out of more to warrant it. When I am boondocking which is not often I am normally running both AC to keep it cool so therefore am running 2 3500 generates tied together to do so. I have not tried the suitcase solar yet as it says it is not waterproof and the trailer is sat in a couple of inches of water right now.

Hey, the sealant is most likely self leveling silicone most fiberglass roofs use that instead of dicor I use epoxy to glue down my hole Downs on my solar panels it's a 3M very expensive but after 4 years it's I didn't make a hole in my roof and it works great it has had no problems. I would call Nexus to see if its Nuflex311 sealant used. ? Dicor won't stick.
