You can pop the plastic end out of that column and shorten it just put one in a 57 for someone that's why there call it custom keep up the good videos thanks
I've put a tilt column in all of my builds over the last 30 years. I've used donor columns from various vehicles and some aftermarket columns I'm 6'3" and need the extra leg room. Especially in my manual shift cars. Keep up the good work.
Hmm. Done this conversion the old school way before the aftermarket columns came into being. We used a tilt column from a 69-78 Chevy van back then. The aftermarket columns are based on them..use the same switches too.
Glad to see more car videos. I was going through withdrawals from not having my daily DD Speedshop videos. I was beginning to think you lost internet after Saturday’s live stream ha ha
As long as you don't run off the road and run the steering column through your chest you really don't need that energy absorbing feature at all. Just fluff. Kind of like the folding hoods that don't go through the windshield and give you a crew cut. .
In the past, I've used a 2 bolt exhaust flange to mount the column to the floor. The inside diameter matches well and if you don't want to weld it to the column a split flange will work. Dan have a "grounding issue"? Nah, other than an his excessive compulsion for everything mid 50's Chevys, he seems grounded...🤣🤣
Dan I understand you're being angry with the wagon. You were upset with the Satellite and Challenger too...They turned out pretty good if I remember correct. You'll get the wagon's issues sorted out. You work on REAL tri-fives! You get to drive yours. I work on model tri-fives...
See, I actually enjoy wiring. Routing, planning circuits, rebuilding instrument clusters, adding in accessories and such. Just something clean and easy to fart around with I guess... Its quite obvious thats NOT the case with alot of people from some of the wiring jobs I've seen in cars I've purchased! Some pretty scary! Nice to see the wagon back in, what wondering if it was going to get forgotten with the Black Widow now fresh on the mind. Never get tired of the Tri-five stuff. I have the same year Fords and alot of it actually does relate.
Getting in and out of my Cuda is similar to a car with a cage in it, the GTO is simple, but fitting under the steering wheel of the Plymouth requires special movements.. I am a short fat guy, so a tilt would be great but on an E body its not an easy thing. I feel your pain, but in a shorter package.
I loved the 57 four door hardtop that you got, but a fifty six is the year they looked the best to me. I like these better than the road tour ones but we take what we get. I really enjoyed seeing a nice column in the car/wagon. Chevy was not thinking too hard when they put the "Impaler shaft" on their older rides.... nor were other car companies for that matter. I think I told you I used to drive a wrecker for my dad as a kid so some wrecks were um... narely. I keep thinking that this 56 is kinda leading you to a upholstery shop before its all over. This will be a first for you to have wiring management inside a rig. Have fun out there doing the race thing... its like a virus, once you start racing, it stays in your system. A little spritz with a rattle can inside and head for the show being towed by a 55 gasser/plow car. I was down south in the lower forty eight many years ago and seen a engine hoist hanging off the back of a car towing another. Cheers
Welcome back lol to your place I meant I did watch your road Trip it was awesome except for the guy that booted you out of his shop koodoos to you for not saying the Guys name or name of the shop classy Dan classy 😎
I enjoy your channel very much, remind me of when I was young with all of your energy. I still work on my 71 monte but its not as easy as it used to be
@@DDSpeedShop I especially enjoyed making the 57 into a 2 door. I had one in 1970 and blew the motor and sold it for junk for 50 dollars. That's when you could get a new car for 2800 bucks. Those were really good days. Keep up the videos
I really like the work that you do! I find your channel very very entertaining and very funny!! You do great work ! My name is Mike and I’m from Cleveland Ohio! Keep up the excellent channel!!
Where is your tachometer? Looks like that cute little three pack of gauges would fit perfectly inside the hole for the radio 👍 don't forget to hook the dash lights to your gauges also.
Dan, you said something about being or not being an idiot, well your definitely NOT an idiot! You have a world of knowledge and talents about building cars in my opinion. I do have a question and I’m not trying to be a smart as$. Your title referred to the wagon as a “Gasser”, what makes this car a gasser? I’m older now but in my younger hotrod days, it wasn’t a gasser unless it was jacked up in the front and had a straight axel. Most gassers back then didn’t have fender wells and the back end was way lower than the front and was supposed to help traction. Maybe I’m just thinking about the dragsters from all the drag tracks that I attended and raced at…
It looks good. It’s almost too good for you. It’s not junkie enough. 😂 if you want turn signals, you should have to touch two bare wires together as you’re driving.
Hey Dan Was saving this one for later...which became even later😉 I do not know how you deal with the mass' of wiring, even cords on a computer are my nemisis; I need them to be all tied up and out of my way....then they are more of a pain when I need to change something..haha This column looks great in the car. Have you made up your mind about the wagon yet? Take care of Yourself.
Liked that the wagon is back on the main bunner. like about knowing the GM style from speedway wiring harness works with those columns Thanks for info on installing Thinking about trying but was needing a push to start this change thinks for the push.
Time to get a 6.0 LS from a "Salvage" job and maybe freshen it up with new rings, lap the valve seats... valve springs, lifters and cam... optional? [but would make fab youtube content]. So much reliability and then you get to rip this traitorous 454 apart and keep it for some other drag monster and have a nice reliable grocery getting Wagon of most people's dreams [certainly I'd call it a dream wagon]. New painted [patina'd] hood after you get the LS in it though and Turbo [no scoop as it will be a grocery getting SLEEPER wagon]. :-)) Dani would perfer the reliability with the 6.0 LS... could you stroke the 6.0 to something closer to like a 427 number... hmmm lmao
The grant hub & horn kits are cheap pot metal hubs and have always been junk, never work right and horn button fall apart in short order. The cure is a GM steering hub & horn kit for a 60s corvette or Chevelle with a Chevy SS 3 spoke stainless14 inch wheel or if you got the money a wood Vette wheel that all use the heavy duty GM hub and horn kit & button. Also the Olds SX stainless 4 spoke wheels also fit the GM hub and are very nice as well but the grants are built to fail. That Grant wheel you got is a 12 inch, all the GM wheels are a 14 inch , you will like any of the GM wheels.
I agree.... No offense meant, but the hood just kills the looks for me. I like the bug catcher so much better, but it's not my car. I say.... Whatever spins your tires!
I wonder if the gage cluster is out of a 55 instead of a 56. I read some where that the high beam light was Red on a 55 but for 56 and 57 the high beam lights are Blue.
I like how you showed about installing the steering column and wiring ,you make it not look intimidating . as far as the trailer fenders I think you did great job on repairing them ,your welds look good . did you ever get the stickers that I sent you over a month ago ?
Only short people could afford cars back then..LOL. Being an old fossil like me it kinda bothers me those old cars columns don't collapse..but hey thats how they did it then and it worked. My old 55 had the turning radius of The Queen Mary..Just don't do any three point turns LOL
