Installing a M.2 SSD into a Laptop

My windows installations detected the M.2 drive, so there was no need for me to do any other configuration. The hdd shows up in disk manager as a separate partition.

Depends on the manufacturer. With the GIGABYTE laptop, I had to purchase my own USB drive, and then run the utility to create a Recovery USB key. I would recommend created the recovery USB key first as you may want to restore the factory image in the future, or even restore it on to the new SSD. If you do not create the Recovery USB key you would need to obtain a windows installation disc. If you have a different branded laptop, you would need to find out from them how to create the recover USB drive. Some manufacturers still provide recovery discs. Seems like many people are having problems with migrating the OS over to the SSD, I might make a video about that if i get time. Thanks for your comment!

BeeSA WORKS ,Thank you , my laptop is the new Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM 15.6-Inch Full HD Notebook (Intel Core i3-7100U Processor 7th Generation , 4GB DDR4, 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive, Intel HD Graphics 620, Windows 10 Home). Im installing a Samsung Evo M.2 SSD & keeping the HDD as is in place for extra storage. I just dont know how to take the OS from the HDD & move it to the New SDD (Have never done this before ever ) I want to do that then use HDD as extra storage for vids/pics .Thank you

You sure can, I just chose to keep the HDD inside as a means to store data. Only the OS and applications are installed on the SSD, for performance reasons

Jaime Costa; Valid point. Me too have the same doubt. Because some docs and forums advise to disconnect battery leads before plugging SSD.

The SSD is notched with a key, so you can only insert in in one direction.

It would depends specifically on the model number.

Do you have the Gigabyte P34F V5? it would be very strange if they did not come with it like my laptop, as my was as seen in the video from factory. If it is another brand or model, you may have to find specific information for that model. Post your laptop model details here, and either myself or someone can help you find it.

This video was made 4 years ago when NVME was not an economical option at the time. Plus i still needed the HDD storage space of the 1TB HDD originally included. It was still a significant improvement on overall system performance.

My laptop actually came with the screw to all me to install the SSD, you may have to try and source one online if yours did not come with it.

+Abdul Osman No, the single screw was already included in the empty slow of my Gigabyte P34F laptop. Also, no additional software was required as the Samsung 850 Evo M.2 SSD was detected in the bios. It was a very simple and straight forward install once I figure out how to get the M.2 SSD in there. Thanks for watching, I hoped this video helped you!

It sounds a little trick, but I suggest you could try created an image of your current SSD and then cloning it to the new SSD. While not perfect it will save you time of re configuring all your software and settings again. However, I personally prefer to go with the fresh install on all my machines.

You can use 3rd party software like Macrium Reflector to clone the disk

I would use magic disk to clone the hard drive onto the ssd before installing it. That way there is no need to reinstall windows

The slot still allows the SSD to work, the key just ensures the SSD is inserted correctly

can you give me some advice? i have a laptop (lenovo) with nvme port for m.2 ssd. so i bought an m.2 ssd corsair mp500 but the laptop can not recognize it. i tried almost everything (bios update, format the ssd,) but i still can not see the ssd in bios or in windows disk management. any idea?? if i try a different ssd like the one you use in the video with B+M keys should it work? thanks

same here, same laptop, same problem, Intel 80GB M.2 SSD B&M key, can't see on bios or in windows. if you get something, to how it work, and you resolved this pls share it to mem.

@Darrey i tried a different ssd crucial mx300 with b+m keys and it worked! however in bios it showed up as pcie ssd and not nvme. This is strange because the laptop has nvme port with just M key and it supposed to support my previous ssd (corsair mp500). Now in bios there is an hdd and an ssd as pcie and the nvme option is blank. i think this is a mistake by lenovo, it's just like an virtual nvme port since it can not detect any other nvme m.2 ssd. in your case i would suggest formatting the ssd and then try it again. also there is a driver for intel ssd. try this as well

anonymous_t i have a lenovo legion y700 i bought an intel ssd 5 80gb with b&m key and doesnt work, doesnt show up on bios, or device manadger, i think i have to buy another ssd with only M key (nvme) because the lenovo website shows this leptop is supporting only the nvme ssd :( so i have an ssd to sell anyone need ? :D

This is a Gigabyte P34F which uses SODIMM DDR4. You will have to check your laptop specifications to identify which memory you need to buy for an upgrade.

So if my drive says than i need sdram on my laptop means than I need to upgrade my ram and then my drive? I want to upgrade it by a caddy m2 with a fan.

The price will not affect how you install the SSD. It will only depend if your desktop motherboard has a M.2 slot

I would recommend running macrium reflect. I did it and it went pretty smooth

Thanks for the comment, will do in the future. I did it in one take and there were no instructions anywhere on the web on how to tear down my laptop. I thought it was a good idea at the time to show the difficulties I had with opening it up. Appreciate your comments +Albert Stanciu
