The honey bee hobby is an expensive hobby by my own experience. It's hard to find anyone who will answer questions if its your first time. The box of bees are sold at a 5lb measure with a queen and they will see you coming by pricing the box at $150 dollars or more. The veil was $100 dollars, then there are the tools you will need and I haven't even mentioned the hive itself. The Top Bar which is not very popular and is the easiest to work is about $500 or more if you have to have it shipped or you can make one yourself IF you have the skills, the lumber and the right tools for that. I was lucky the Top Bar was given to me.

I've started just putting the open package in the back part of the hive and the queen in the front. They all come out in a day without shaking the heck out of them. They seem to do better

If I’m adding bees for the very first time to a brand new too bar hive. Do i need comb for them ? If so where do i get that if i never had bees b4? Real comb or fake ?

You do not need any comb, they will build what they need

I'm always fascinated at bee keeping. I'd love to see a DIY on building a hive out of pallets. I'm curious, do all the bees die over winter there? In Georgia we see them year round but we did have record snow and cold temps this past winter. That hive seems so close to an entrance. How do you protect the children from them?

They do not die in winter, or least not supposed to. They will clump around the queen and keep her and each other warm while eating the honey they stockpiled over the year.

JonesThang sometimes pallets aren't the best choice, if those pallets ever went through customs the have been exposed to pesticides.

Mr Frog very true as long as it is raw and not pasteurized. Don't feed honey to children under 2.

I have them on the south side of our garage, they get filtered sun in the summer so they are not too hot but full sun in winter when the leaves fall off the trees

Just wondering why you had to buy a package of bees when you already have a top bar filled with comb? What happened to the previous bees? Why didn't you use that beautiful comb and some lemon grass oil and make a bee trap?

Make a hive swarm trap and get your bees for free. Wild bees are hardier than bought Italian strains.

Suburban Homesteading Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant the place he purchased the bees. I'm from Michigan originally, and all of my family is back there. Him being in Michigan is why I watch his channel. Gotta support the homeland. Lol My personal homestead is complete and 100% self sustaining in Northern Michigan. I just don't live there.Its always good to gain nuggets of knowledge from others, especially, in like areas. I've learned several things from this channel.

Are you allergic to bees?? Asking because of the way you jumped from the wasp, and because of the bee keeper Gumby suit?

wasp stings are incredibly more painful than honey bees. Even the seasoned beekeeper doesn't WANT to be stung, but can tolerate it. I used to wear a full suit, but now just beekeep in a veil and t-shirt/shorts.
