I have a large cage that has 2 large doors on the front and several little doors that raise to put feeder in, Instead of cutting my nice cage I raised the feeder door and put the hole in that area and then secured the bolt and washer through the wire of the cage and the raised door. Now my cage is not damaged. No way was I going to cut the wire on a 240.00 bird cage.
Rhonda Oneal most cages have many doors and feeding trap doors...I found lovebirds at Xmas and I think there mating I got one of these today not sure if I’ll put it in the cage or above the curtain pole as they love it there

I’m getting a nesting box for my pregnant bird, but what will she use for the nest itself? Will she make it using her feathers and treat sticks, or will I have to help her with that?
I don't have a nesting box yet, my budgie is laying eggs in her food dish, what do I do? Also, do I have to cut a hole in my cage, or can I just use the cage opening and fasten it there?
Virginia Scott You can move the eggs into an appropriate nesting area, as you don't want her taking care of them in the food dish. Are the eggs fertile? If not, you can let her sit on them for a bit and then remove them. It's best to provide a separate opening for the nest box so you can maintain easy access to the cage inside. Unless you have several openings and it won't get in your way (I don't know how your cage is constructed). You also want to make sure that the area around the box won't provide the birds with an opening from which to escape!
Could I have come tips? I have had 3 bonded previously abused parakeets that I got in early July, that are still not tamed. I try hard, but nothing's working. Any tips? I also have been using aspen bedding as a substrate in my tray and was wondering if pine is safe.
I got a reverse breeding box with the perch inside so if I move it to the front then the hole from the inside is so far away I don't know how my budgie will get out. The seller of my box said to leave the perch inside so I would like to know how my budgies would get in...fly? I just need some suggestions please?.
Do you put the box toward the top of the cage or the bottom? My ba ies are atarting to want out and my nesting box is toward the top. I worry about them falling. This is my first hatch and i am nervous for them
Do you think that it is nesasary to use the leash in the house for example for the bird to explore the house or is it a better idea tojust not have one and keep buddy in my room?
Maya Cascallar I don't think the leash is necessary inside, unless you are allowing your bird into a non "bird proofed" area. By that, I mean an environment where there are windows, mirrors, open containers of water (like pet bowls), ceiling fans, etc. that might harm the bird.

Well actually i just taught my bird how to kiss and he is doing quite well i think the budgie just needs to get into the habbit of knowing that around the lips that it is just a kiss and to be gentle

+mehul42 Hope you end up having a bonded pair! It will be best to separate the pair if they do decide to breed, so that is one thing you will have to plan for. I would suggest doing as much research as you can on breeding. Although budgies are not that difficult to breed, there are certain things you'll want to have in place, such as adequate lighting, a constant source of calcium, good food and vitamin supplements!
What do you use for bedding material? I've had two parakeets for a couple years and they just layed an egg in their food bowl last night....I know nothing about parakeets.....Help....:)
My OTP budgies are so random lol I mean the female always attacks the male, takes most place when she sleeps n doesn't share with the food... yet they scratch each other, feed each other (yuck) and kiss2.. lol Should I get a box for em? gonna need a hugeass cage .-.
+Nurin Izzati it sounds like they may have the potential to be a bonded pair, if they feed each other, etc.! A big cage is definitely a good idea. That may cut down on some of the fighting, if nothing else. You can try a box, since they are relatively expensive and see how it goes!
I have one similar to that except it only has one hole on the bottom where the branch thing is. Also it opens from the front. Should I return it? I bought it from Amazon
Sounds like it may be a bit difficult to work with. I would definitely recommend a box which opens from the top and can easily be hung outside of the cage.

Hey, I was wondering how long it takes for my new budgie to get settled and start to not fly away from me. He is very skittish and is still considered a baby but isn't being hand fed.
It really depends on the bird and the environment it's in. Some birds just take a few days, but if you have a very shy bird or an environment that is scary to the bird, it may take longer. Take a look at my trust video, as it may offer you some tips on how to get your bird to trust you sooner! I would definitely take things slowly and gently.
Hey I have a question in my case I breed my bugies there about 7 babies maybe the oldest is 3 weeks old do I remove babies at some point or do the all come out nest box eventually?????? I need help 😫 maybe silly question but I don't know I just want them to survive I have been doing research but I haven't come across a clear cut answer unless I would hand feed witch I'm not!
Yes, once you attach an outside nest box, there is a hole there. You could patch it back up with a piece of caging, but it will not look as it did when you bought it.

Ya, I did a lot of research, I also like your cage, I have the same one, that's why setting up the nesting box was easy :). Also, when will my parakeets go into the nest box or how will they discover it?
ThePlazma38 Cool, I'm glad you like the cage setup! My birds went into the nest box on their own after a few weeks. I did put some favorite toys and a cuttle bone on perches near the box, so they would be a little more motivated to get close to it. Since my Budgies aren't breeding right now, I can't say how long it would take if you have a pair that is ready to breed....I would image then they will look for a nest much more quickly!

Hey i have three amazing pet parakeets and one the young baby parakeet when i take him out of the cage like to crawl under my shirt and law down in my chest what dose that mean?
Thankyou that did help and i decided to onley keep my bird.but i have one last question have you ever heard of a bird leash because i have done some reaserch and it is a harnest around the bird and it comes with a little diper but dont worry this does not do any harm the bird does not evan know that its there and it makes it so that you can bring the bird aroung the house and it does not have to walk it can fly aswel. So i was wondering if you can please get one and try a video on it so that i will know wether to get one or not. I have heard of a flight harness and don't have one at the moment (but they can come in very handy, especially if you want to take your bird outside). I am currently still working on several video requests and don't want to make you wait. There is a great video showing a Budgie with one on at Parrot flying outside 2. They do work very well!
Thanks for the comment Michelle! I am really thinking I have a male/female pair in that the cere for the albino keet is very light blue and the cere for the lutino is slightly scaly and pinkish. It may be hard to tell because albino and lutino keets have very muted cere colors. Hoping they breed soon!
henx125, I believe that what you do is move the box to the floor of the cage when the babies begin to stick there heads out of the box, or at least that is what I plan to do. And please other folks , lets be respectful of a person's question, there is never a dumb question , that is how we all learn.

Hey! I need your help :) I cant find anywhere in my city a nesting box with that circle insode for eggs.. Bttom of this box is totally flat.. what can i use for eggs, to keep them in place?
This sounds like fun! Do you have to provide any nesting material? And if so what? And if the birds end up being nesting birds what do you do with the offspring? I'm not really equipped to be an aviary. When we had fish like 20 years ago the babies we could take to a pet store and they'd exchange them for credit based on the type of fish.
Good video but how do you actually get the female to go inside... The breeding box has been there for a while now but won't enter so I try putting food outside but nothing happens... What can I do? Please respond quick if you can. :)
I had to take a small hammer and hammer out the perch. it is in there very tightly when you purchase the box. it almost looks like it is glued in but it isn't
Yeah I thought the perch was glued in. I could not push it out for nothing but it was very easy, with your hand inside the box to pull it out from the inside. Just in case anyone else has this problem.
Sebastian Fairfield it is possible to put a box inside the cage, however the bulky size will take up quite a bit of space, which could leave the birds with inadequate room. Also, birds tend to gnaw on wood, so a box inside the cage welcome quite a bit of chewing.
Leandro Hernandez You should be able to order the shavings online. However, you don't necessarily need shavings. Many budgies will actually remove those from the box when they get ready to lay.
My pair has been in the breeding cage for about 5 days and still have not come inside the nesting box. How do i gat them interested in the nesting box.
Joary Ortiz They should naturally be interested in it. Is your pair displaying behaviors that show that they are interested in each other (for instance, is the male feeding the female, is he hopping around her, or is the female eating a lot and focusing on cuttlebones)?
***** They sleep together, eat together, sometimes feed eachother, sometimes groom eacother, kiss, and have long conversations. Although in the petstore where we got them, there was no breeding box so they are probaly not used to a breeding box.
Joary Ortiz Ok, well it certainly seems like they are interested in each other! My birds took several weeks to become comfortable with the nest box. What might help is to put favorite treats and/or toys near the box to encourage them to check it out!
Maya Cascallar That could be a very cute trick, but not all Budgies are good candidates for this, since some can be nippy (birdie bite to the lip...ouch!). For that reason, I don't encourage it and I haven't taught my birds to do it.
Leandro Hernandez As long as there is a concave area in your box, the birds really don't need nesting material. If you do chose to use something, oats can be an alternative.
No Alex, the female can lay eggs without a male but they will not hatch because a male has not fertilized the eggs. Which he does while they are mating while the egg is still inside the female.
It will take them awhile to get use to the box Florence, they will eventually go in when they are ready. It took mine over a week, she has laid 2 eggs in the box and laid 2 while sitting on the perch and they hit the bottom and broke.

+Mariella Jakobsson all the conditions have to be right for them to be stimulated. You have to have long enough light periods, about 12 hours a day, and they have to have plenty of food, water, and calcium.
+The Parakeet Perch okay. They have vitamin block, cuttlebone, salat every day, water, a bird seed mix of high quality with extra vitamins in it. :/ do i need anything else?
If you birds are fairly calm, you might be able to do this by being very gentle, and covering the hole before you put the box on. Otherwise I would definitely suggest taking the birds out!
pam fredette Yes, female parakeets can lay eggs without male assistance (infertile eggs)! If you can, leave the eggs in place until the females lose interest in them, as removing eggs can stimulate more egg laying (and increase the possibility that the female(s) become egg bound). If eggs get broken, however, it's best to pull them. You can put "dummy eggs" in place of them, although this may not be necessary if there are multiple eggs and the hen has something to sit on!

Jada Theus Hi Jada. Have you tried increasing their light and making sure all other breeding conditions are favorable (enough food, minerals available, a nesting box available, etc.)? Even in the best of environments, sometimes pairs just do not bond. Budgie females are picky about their partners, so it can happen that your little girl is just not enticed by the male. If that is the case, you may need to introduce a new male to see if she bonds with him.
Patrick Cabarles It should not take them long to breed once being introduced, but that is only if conditions are right and the female accepts the male. Parakeet females can be picky and will not mate with every male. Aside from that, there also needs to be enough light daily (about 12 hours and a full spectrum light is often recommended) and plenty of food and water (mine also seek lots of calcium during breeding season).
+Holly Smith You might be able to find a breeder or rescue in our area through google. Make sure to ask lots of questions about where your new bird is coming from and check out the breeder area or space where your budgie is being kept before getting it. If it is dirty, ill kept, or contains sick birds.. or if the breeder is hesitant about offering information, go elsewhere.
Joary Ortiz I think it might slide down if the bars are vertical where it's hung. If you could position the screw or perch along a crossbar, that might help!
