Installing A Pop and Lock Tailgate For My 3rd Generation Toyota Tacoma

Today I added a much needed mod!! In today's video I install a pretty cool inexpensive mod, that has a big impact on using the truck! This is a "pop and lock" system that I put together for about $30. That's more then half the actual system, so I'm pretty excited to see it work! It took about 1.5 hours, maybe just a bit more, the hardest part was the wiring and just getting that from the tailgate to the passenger door. Installing the actuator itself wasn't too hard, and then it's just a matter of connecting everything and making it look nice! Pretty easy DIY project to add to the usability of the tailgate. I use it all the time and this is a great time saver, but also lets me know that the tailgate is locked when I'm not with the truck!

Easy way to line up the holes on the door lock actuator is to line it up where you want it and screw two dry wall screws through it. That way you’ll have a hole exactly where you need it and you can drill it out bigger. Then put the actuator underneath and use the screws that came with it to mount the actuator to the sheet metal.

I just installed this kit. I could see that I needed more clearance to fit the wire protectors at the tailgate and the bed. I rigged a small platform with a piece of plywood and a bench. The plywood rested on the bumper and the bench. I partially removed the tailgate on the passenger side, angled it rearward several inches, and laid it on the platform. The extra three inches of space made this part of the job much easier.

I love saving money, so I just did this myself. Everything worked great, but I have a couple of comments. Before drilling the hole for the actuator rod, extend the actuator fully by pulling on it and lock the tailgate. Then drill the hole. This will ensure the rod doesn’t interfere with the locking mechanism. After wiring is complete, and everything is buttoned up, put a small amount of silicone on the floorboard grommet where the wires run through. This will prevent water from getting in the cab.

I bought the same actuator for my 2018 Tacoma. Works great. Easy installation if you're able to do some pretty basic electrical work. I bought the two pack for the actuator, just in case this one goes out, I have a backup and it only cost an extra $3 for the 2 pack.

Hi Mike 😄. That is honestly amazing and $30 to do the mod yourself. I think it's so awesome how well you know you're Tacoma, from the disassembling and knowing where wires go as well as how to connect them, it's wild that you know what to do. $60-$70 you did not spend and saved.

The OEM kit runs about $160 to $200 depending on where you purchase it from. If you can come up with an under $50 alternative, cudos to you. I have the OEM kit in route as I prefer something a little more “plug and play” as well as being engineered to fit the truck itself. Looking forward to getting it installed.
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 2 года назад
If you want to go that route, perfectly fine! I made this kit for less than $50 and to this day it still works great and really isn't much different of an install minus the actual connection.

Great mod, much cheaper and works as fine. I did exactly as you did and its almost 6 months old with no problem at all. @davidhuebner4027 3 года назад
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I’m talking about putting an additional inline fuse between the wiring from the back to before it connects to the control module where you use the tap splices. What ended up happening is at the connections to the actuator there was a bit of exposed wire on both wires and they touched causing a short. I’ve checked all my fuses and can’t find one that popped. I’m now assuming I really messed things up and will be needing to take it in to get fixed. The touch sensor on the driver handle doesn’t work. The locking buttons inside don’t work. My fob only makes my truck beep twice when I press unlock but it doesn’t do anything and it does absolutely nothing when I press the lock button.

Cris Reyes basically, if something quits working right on your truck, Toyota would have to demonstrate that your mod caused the malfunction. So putting in this tailgate mod isn’t a blanket void of your truck warranty or electrical warranty. But if the mod damaged the latch, you can’t expect Toyota to fix it under warranty.
