Installing a Rebuild Kit for a Woodford Model 17 Hydrant

This hydrant is starting to drip all the time, so I bought a rebuild kit- let’s go ahead and fix it.
After I shut off the water in the building, I removed the handle- It’s just a flat-head screw.
I used a crescent wrench to loosen the packing nut.
I temporarily screwed the handle back on and then turned it counterclockwise until the threads released at the back of the hydrant.
At this point I can pull it towards me to remove the entire assembly.
Next, I removed the old rubber packing and washer.
Then on the other end I used pliers to remove the check valve.
Finally, I removed retainer screw that holds the rubber valve seat on- I had to use a screwdriver to pry out the old valve seat.
To reassemble, I slid on the new check valve from the kit.
You can see how hard and misshaped the old valve seat is- this is most likely why it was leaking.
I put the retaining screw through the new valve seat and reattach it with the flat side of the valve down.
At this point I can slide the whole assembly back in.
Once it was in place, I reattached the handle and turned it clockwise till the hydrant was shut.
Then I removed the handle one more time.
Now I put on the new packing washer and slipped on the rubber packing.
I thread on the packing nut - you don’t have to go overboard tightening this down, just snug it up with a crescent wrench.
I reattached the handle, turned the water to the building back on, and checked that everything was working.
So, let me know in the comments would you hire a plumber or do this repair yourself? ‪@hausplans‬

I'm a retired Master Plumber and Gas Fitter from over 47 years and have rebuilt many the next time try to use some plumbers grease or some Vaseline or silicone grease and it will help keep the seats and seals playable and soft for longer and as you can hear the squeaky or squealing sound and be much easier to turn and as well as keeping things from corroding longer.just remember to flush out the extra grease after Repair. Thanks for all the content. Stay Well and be Safe Dale

This is a helpful video, BUT what if the old knob is corroded and can't be removed? I devoted several hours just to tackle that problem. I wrapped the faucet with a vinegar-soaked paper towel, secured a plastic bag over the knob and bib overnight, and then sprayed several times with WD-40. Kept wiggling the darn thing and after numerous tries the knob finally came off. It might help others to know that this is not a simple task! Everything else is well covered in the video. Thank you!

I know some people would hire a plumber but I would NOT EVEN hand them a wrench to start. But me? I know I would be on speed dial of those who I talk of. Bless their hart😂

I would definitely do it myself Only thing is in Central Arkansas area NO ONE CARRIES the WOFFORD Brand and I can't find the rebuild kits. So I have had to change out several of them.

To answer your question: I might try this myself based on your excellent demonstration here. However, what rebuild kit to purchase if the brand/model of 'hydrant' (didn't know that was the word for these) is unknown? It's just an old hydrant that is definitely dripping all the time. And I'm in an area that freezes in winter (zone 5b) so this is very concerning. You do such good work! Where are you located and do you work outside of your area?

I got an old two-way attachment that's stuck on there that I can't get off. Any suggestions? Got hate to have to take the whole gang thing off just to put on a new one when all the problem is it's just that I have one old thing stuck on.

I’m not really sure what you’re asking, what’s a two-way attachment? Is it stuck on a faucet?

2 small pipe wrenches? Or one and a visegrip? Presuming you mean a Y - splitter

1:25 Depends, if I have enough money I’d call a plumber because that gives him work, I can give him a tip and he made some profit because with everything getting more expensive every bit of money you can make is extra valuable for most people but if I’d be in a position where saving money is the best thing to do, I’ll do simple things myself
