Installing a recessed manhole cover

Installing a recessed manhole cover on Indian sandstone patio slabs. Recessed manholes are important on a patio if you want to hide those unsightly manhole lids! All you will see when done right is a rim around the outside of the cover and to the untrained eye the manhole cover will not be noticed.

Great job Sam. Wrekin sell a 450 recessed sq cover that sits inside the PPIC and you rotate it to suit the finished layout.

nice job. personally id have maybe rotated it or moved it down to balance the joints so has not to have slithers still overall finish looks good

Thanks. Good point there, I maybe could have placed it a little better. The slithers can be awkward but luckily sandstone is strong even on slithers

I have a dumb question, sorry. What is the mix you are spreading down? concrete?
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Месяц назад
That's ok, no question is dumb! The mix is mortar, its 5:1 so 5 parts sand and 1 part cement with plasticiser. There is videos of how to mix mortar on my channel

Great job Sam and thanks for sharing. Would you then point the stones within the tray as you would the rest of the patio? Thanks.
@SamDaviesBuilder

Hi Jamie, thanks! Yes you would point what’s in the tray the same as all the rest. There’s another recessed tray video on my channel with a bit more detail if you’d like to check it out too

Good lord that is a neat finish! I have a question: the cut slabs seem to butt right up to the manhole edges which I assume would be impossible to point later - would that not cause an issue with water staying in the crack? Thanks!
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
Thankyou! Some people like to leave a joint up to the manhole edges and point them but I don’t think it leaves that seamless finish where the manhole isn’t meant to be obvious. So I just cut them as tight as I can to the edge and as long as you do a full bed underneath then the water can’t penetrate anywhere. Another way of doing it if you thought the water would be an issue sitting in the crack would be to do a thin bead of clear silicone

Hi. Could I ask why you didn't go 90 degrees and put the black frame more in line with other stones? Just curious, looking to do this myself
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 3 года назад
Hi, I think because I’d slabbed up to it the way I had then this was the only way I could go. I usually try and do them so they run in line and with as minimal cuts as usual. Definitely nearer than a manhole lid! Just make sure you slab up as close as you can around it before you fit it as you can measure everything much easier off all the existing slabs
@freakstate

@@SamDaviesBuilder Interesting, thank you for replying. End result looks great either way, just mapping out where mine goes and luckily it isn't a huge area that I have to figure out!

Where did you get the frame/tray for this? I’ve been shopping for something similar and they are outrageously expensive.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
Travis Perkins usually are fair priced. They shouldn’t be more than 50 or 60 pounds. Make sure you get the shallow version as if you get a version for block paving you have to put loads of mortar in them to get the height. What prices have you seen for them?
@kcmorgan88
@kcmorgan88 Год назад
@@SamDaviesBuilder I’m trying to find a tray that I can put concrete in that will be part of the decking for my spray decking here in Vegas. Cheapest I’ve been able to find so far is about $650. 😳 but everything seems to be for pavers. Thinking I might just do a pre fabricated mold and then match the decking to that when it gets poured.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder Год назад
@@kcmorgan88 ah you’re in the U.S. 650 is a crazy price. You’re definitely best off making something you can pour concrete in with some rebar for strength

I want to widen my block paved drive way onto my lawn by about 1.5 metres but there are two plastic square manhole covers there. I checked and these covers' edges are just sitting on soil below the turf with the round inspection hole connected to a round plastic deep drain. If i wanted to replace these with recessed manhole covers capable of being driven over, how do I prepare below them please?
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 4 года назад
Without seeing a picture, I would dig out the soil around the round manhole so you can put around 6 inches of concrete in (Mark out the size of your rectangular manhole first and make the concrete slightly bigger), then you could bed the recessed manhole cover on that concrete or if the concrete is further down then build up with bricks to sit the recessed cover on

hi I have a drain opening of 475mm round can I use a 450mm as it sits over the top like in the video otherwise I will have to use a 600x600mm cover and they are big and not as attractive? thanks
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 3 года назад
I think you’ll be fine, it doesn’t matter if the cover sits inside the drain opening a bit. Most important thing is you cover any gaps where the opening is bigger. Use slate before the concrete haunching on the outside if it falls through the gaps

Hi - any reason why you went for a rectangular tray and not a square one? Thanks

Hi, only because those rectangular trays were in stock in my local merchants and at a good price. If I could have found a smaller one easily I’d have gone for a small square one

Trying to lift that lid is gonna suck. Those handles look plastic, which is going to suck even worse. Pretty tho.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 2 года назад
They're not too bad to lift, just do a two person lift if they're too heavy and its ok. The old cast iron ones weighed a fair bit so these are probably about the same. I do agree with the plastic handles which may not stand the test of time though

The primer is to stop shadowing, moisture from the mortar seeping through the pourous sandstone. Absolutely nothing to do with grooved calibrated paving.
