Installing a Tachometer on the van - Mk5 Ford Transit

In this video I run through the process of installing an aftermarket rev counter (Tachometer) on my MK5 ford transit 2.5 N/A DI engine. This process will be the same for many vehicles with an older style alternator like this one. Simple 4 wire installation makes for a nice addition to the dashboard. The tacho used is specifically made for a 4 cylinder diesel engine, it's backlit and also does a needle sweep, awesome! It will require a handheld tach in the future to calibrate it properly, but for now it's been set up close to where I think it should be.

Excellent video mate I'm a 41 year old mechanic/fabricator/welder and I was about to fit a tacho (same one as yours) to my mk5 car transporter and was doing a bit of interweb research before I started and came across this vid. I must admit when I first saw a young lad I though here we go but I have to say how wrong I am. Adding the resistor to clean up the signal is something I would have never of thought of I would have just lived with the spikes and thought nothing of it. I am very impressed with your work! Couple of things I learnt while doing mine the grey and black wire from the alternator at the twist multi plug turns in to a white with black wire that, on my truck, went all the way up to the instrument cluster. It's one of the two center wires on the longest plug the other center wire next it was solid purple (I have seen on forums people say theres did not though). And the hand held tachos to set them up can be bought on ebay for £8.99.

Thanks mate, really means a lot coming from someone with experience in the trade 🙂 it’s a great point, the grey black wire on mine just finished in the multi plug, whereas you must have a different spec possibly. I’ve just had a look at the handheld Chinese tacks, might be worth a punt. Thanks for your comment 😁

Haha thanks mate, once I have the standard DI as perky as I can get it I might just have to add one 🤭 link in the description for the tachometer. Ordered off Amazon from company called Carlab I think 😁

I do plan to put a turbo on it! But still haven’t managed to find one as it seems they are in high demand.

@@TurnersWorkshop97 the Problem is not the Turbo, it can be bought very cheap for like 200 buck or so. Your problem will be to find a exhaust manifold. What kind of fuel pump do you have? If it's a Bosch, it's less difficult to make the fuel adjustment with boost pressure.

I've put the same tacho and got factory wire running from w terminal which I traced with contenuiety but not working... Needle jumps up then falls down and nothing.

Have you adjusted the calibration potentiometer on the back?

@@TurnersWorkshop97 It works now! I did not fully connect my dash connectors back when testing and there wasnt power going to Alternator to "enable" it I guess, not exactly sure but it works now, just need to tweak the resistor and make sure it matches up with my engine rpms roughly.

If you check the alternator connections, more than likely will be very similar
