Installing a Wind Turbine - Part 1!
Preparing the post for installing our new wind turbine. Solar power is great when you have sun, but on cloudy / overcast days, we need another off grid source. We are going to harness the power of wind!
Working alone might slow things down, but should never hold you back! Join Josh on a solo homestead project.

This was a GREAT video. I loved watching you work and hearing your comment instead of listening to music. Please do this again. When you move it, I'll be interested to see if you use pieces of logs to roll it or try to muscle it. Will you be able to estimate how many pounds lighter it might be? This is so interesting. Merry Christmas from this tough old root, and I can hardly wait for the next episode.

You’ve got determination - that’s the main thing. Mine flags sometimes and unfortunately motivation and determination hang out together so when one goes the other does, too. It’s good when they come back again, though, and you can get a fresh start on things. Sometimes I envy the guy who has a bunch of buddies close by who can come and help out but mostly I just like to be left alone to do things at my own pace and my way - even if that might not be the best/right way. I have one work buddy who passes this way every day who stop and help give me a lift when I need it so I’m grateful for him. All the best 👍🏻

There is absolutely such a thing as "too many cooks on a kitchen" Many people have suggested I call my brother haha they apparently missed the part about how hard we are to get to! However we have many people up here that are more then willing to come lend a hand, and the all have ATVS, Im just not ready for most of them to see the place yet. Perhaps after I finish the siding.

Your exactly right about the poplar tree. Ive seen barns over 100 years old built outta poplar 1"ruff cut lumber. Thats awesome in my opinion. Great video Josh.

Forgive me if I have mentioned this to you before... Kris Harbour in Wales UK is doing what you are doing. He is very hands on inventive and has crafted his own Wind power. It may be worth a look...he is so thorough, warts n all. Its wonderful finding and working with your own microclimate.... us RU-vidrs, we can say what we like but YOU are on that land and in that microclimate; learning and living with Mother Nature. We can rarely get to town anymore, and video storage has become a real issue. I have to choose what to film and stick to it. Many things ether get tossed or not filmed at all.

It's a work in progress! Luckily they're all in our garden area so the incentive is high. With our wood stove being only one cubic foot we're primarily sticking to locust as our firewood but I'm going to use all that stuff for the workshop and possibly sell it.. depending on what it's going for at that point.

Josh, the impossible dream accomplished...wow what a mixed bag of feelings huh? But you still have so many goals left. Poplar isn't too bad it just needs a little protection from the elements and carpenter bees. It the old days poplar barn lumber lasted a long time but it was old growth heartwood with tight grain. Sponsorship is exciting! I'm glad to see that. Can't wait to see this wind producer put in.

@@Geopoliticstoday2 Good treatment but I'm thinking oil may not stick while the wood is green and wet. I'm thinking char treatment. Plus those oils are expensive.

Use blowtorch to cook the ends. It closes the wicking ends. Then brush on used motor oil. Only need to do the butt ends. Sanding the pole will tighten the grains enough and you can burn it as well. Waterproofs the wood. Shou sugi ban is the technique. After you torch it brush on motor oil. Bulletproof for 40 yrs.

Popular is considered hardwood, even though on a hardness rating it is only a small amount harder then white pine. :) I have loads of cedar trees that I build with. Pine will rot to fast here. My oaks I consider a priceless resource, and I have been trying to save them for future generations.

I just want to say stay safe buddy. All of us know it, but you need to think the word safety every day. Last month I got my first tractor, and within a week of having it I fractured my foot in a few places..... All from jumping off into uneven ground lmao. Those ankle twist are one of the many small things that can get you down fast. Keep the good content coming, and I hope y'all have a very merry christmas

I can appreciate that! We almost got this place logged last year. But I decided it was not right for us, this place is home to many things aside from just us. But also thought it was best to save that value for ether our old age or my daughter. And yes to safety! Since starting this, I have lost the use of part of my finger and sunk an ax deep into my right leg.. All a part of doing things yourself I guess! Here is to both of us learning quick!

Do yourself a favor and either make some hardwood wedges or buy some old plastic or steel ones. This way when you cut as the blade starts to sink in you can wedge behind it to not only prevent it from wanting to close that gap you just made, but it will also force the tree to lean the way you planned. I’m just glad that tree didn’t snap and jump at you when you got bound up and we’re kicking it. Good to see you taking on three man projects yourself. It builds confidence! Just take your time and think it out to include the “what if’s” and you’ll do fine, slow and steady wins the race my friend! Stay safe and busy! Merry Christmas to you and yours brother.✌🏼

Because of your video, a suggested video came up for me to watch on You Tube. It's called " The Dangerous Fastest Chainsaw Cutting Tree Machine " Very, very interesting I must say. If you care to take a look, I believe you'll feel the same. I never knew this was even possible even in this day and age. ( Sure could help you out a bit if you had some expendable cash flow.)
