Since moving to a warmer part of the US, I've been thinking about adding an oil cooler to the Westy. It terrifies me a bit since the engine has been running fantastic since the restoration - but I know long term it's a good idea to keep oil temperatures cooler. Especially for older, tired engines.
I've decided to go with an oil cooler setup from Intrepid Overland

For gear I like to recommend for kayaking, camping, photo/video and for my van restoration, I put it all together on an Amazon shop page:

Crazy! I wish I was as meticulous and clean as you are. Such a heartbreak with the stripped thread. I would’ve spewed.

just stumbled across this, thanks for this! i also had an oil temp gauge running off the relocation kit ( fitted by a specialist lol ) and it would only read 60 degrees (obviously cause oil isnt flowing through it properly). i changed it myself and put a sender in the sump plug and now it reads 150 degrees (which i know is way to high) any idea if the make of gauge effects the reading? as the sender is a vdo and says to use a vdo gauge but the ones the shop installed were some cheap looking speedline gauge

Hard luck on the thread issue! What was the temperature drop?

NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!! I have seen a few people mount the oil cooler there, in this position, ITS A VERY BAD IDEA, people, do NOT copy this. First google head hight and any pump!!! what you have done is, you have raised the head hight of the oil, way too high, you should keep the oil cooler on the same level as the mid-point off the engine (give or take a few inches) The oil pump now need to lift the oil way up much higher than ever before, too the very top of that oil cooler, and hopefully at least I hope you have worked out how to bleed the now newly created air pocket. its not a good idea, And thats NOT mentioning the drain down every time you turn off the engine
