Probably the most useful video I have ever viewed. I am trying to renovate my small kitchen, but very worried about the time this will take for me to accomplish, and the scary idea of being without a kitchen sink for maybe a week. I think I can easily get by with this outdoor sink. Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the fantastic idea, DFJ! My husband and I just upgraded our utility sink in our laundry, so we were looking for a way to use our old one out in the garden. He didn't think we could do it, but I showed him your video the other day, and just installed it myself today! Such a rewarding experience. :) I had a bit of trouble adapting the 3/8 inch supply lines we had on hand from the reno up into the 3/4 inch garden hose. It took 3 hardware store clerks and myself to get things to work. Right now it sprays like a pressure washer, but I got it to work and no leaks! I'll have to try for the washer hoses and hopefully that improvement will be gentler on hands and veggies. Thanks again for the great tutorial!

I have an extra utility sink that I didn't want to get rid of and was thinking I would like to use it on the outside. I brought a commercial outside sink, but after many years of use I wore it out. Thanks Dirt Farmer Jay for my next backyard project. I ordered an upgraded sink ( 32 in. x 22 in. Polypropylene White Laundry Sink by RUGGED TUB) and plan on installing 1 1/2" PVC schedule 40 for the drain. I also plan on placing it on a 3' x 6' patio using some concrete stepping stones. Total cost with upgraded sink and patio stones running me around $160. Again thanks for all the info making this project a breeze.

Got a free italian marble counter with cutouts for a basin and faucets somebody was disposing of. Wondering how it would hold up to the elements year round if I install it on top of a simple brick and mortar collar... As I typed that, I realized i should incorporate the pizza oven I want to build sometime soon since that will be brick as well. Outdoor kitchen+ seed sowing/transplant area would be a good use of our space. Good point about the soap, especially good to know if you're "recycling" the water(i.e. watering crops/trees).

I'm doing a similar project with my upcycled former kitchen sink that my son and I are building into a potting bench. The sink’s been up and juryrig functioning for several months on 2x4s and cinder blocks, but I've used a drinking water supply hose from the house to a Y spliter and have a garden hose on one side of the Y and the sink on the other. I've been turning off the main supply from the house and draining the supply hose after each use because I am concerned about it being able to handle the pressure and don't want my water bill to skyrocket with any leaks in a garden hose fitting. Am I overreacting. Can I leave the water run through the hose so I can control it from the faucet or y valve?

The Y connector is in the laundry connections area. I've called it a Y adapter, and that does the trick, I get pointed in the right direction. Since making that video, we've used an alternative method as well, attaching the supply hose to only one side of the faucet, and capping the other. Thanks for watching! Best, DFJ

I was wondering about the same thing four years later. He did mention something about finding it in washing machine warehouse.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 года назад
There is a hose connector, also called an adapter, that will screw directly onto the threaded faucet connector that also mounts the faucet on the sink. Both of these adapters have worked for me. Quotes from the labels: (1) Best Garden Adapter 704008 3/4" MNH x 1/2" FNPT Brass (2) Doit Best Connector Male/female 704008 Connects 3/4" female hose to 1/2" male pipe. To attach a garden hose to the male end of the Y washing machine hose, I made a garden hose with a female connector on each end. (When needed, I can move the sink to wherever the hose will reach.) Since then, I've learned of an adapter made just for this purpose that allows for an un-modified hose. Hope this helps someone.

Nickole, you will have no problem with diluted shampoo on your lawn. In fact, some gardeners use shampoo in their hose end sprayers as a wetting agent to get the soil to accept moisture and nutrients more readily. Have fun setting up and using your outdoor sink. We count on ours! Best, DFJ

Carita Mccoy Carita, We're glad you've found this to be so helpful to you. We use this sink just about every summer day. Yes - any type of sink can be used if it's mounted on some type of stand. The connector is called a "Y connector" and can be found in the plumbing section or your favorite hardware store. This is used to connect a washing machine that has cold and hot water inlets when there is only only one supply hose available. So, the adapter, made of hose and fittings, has one inlet, and two outlets. Have fun - and thanks for watching. Be sure to pass us on to others!
@xmasfolly

Just came across your videos and love this easy outdoor sink idea!! I have wanted one your a long time, but wasn't sure how to connect the plumbing. This is helpful! What do you do in cold weather when temps are below freezing? I live in NW AR and not too cold here for too long, but have had some harsher winters with ice. If we disconnect all the hoses to prepare for winter, should we also remove the faucet? Thoughts or suggestions appreciated. We made our first visit to UT last summer (Moab, Zion areas) and fell in love with the beauty. Can't wait to return!!
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 4 года назад
Debahinds - thanks for watching our video and taking time to write! I use this sink every day during the warm (and hot!) months and plan to always have one. You are wise to think about winterization. Indeed, disconnecting the hoses, and opening the valves will take care of any issues. It's water that is trapped inside the faucet body and cartridges that will cause the issues. We are actually building a small shed around our sink this year (watch for a future DFJ episode on that!) to give further protection and longevity to our sink set up. For now, we disconnect it yearly and put in our tractor barn to be kind to it! Also, I had the privilege of visiting Horseshoe Bend, AR several years ago and staying there a week or so in the late spring Pretty county! BTW, if you haven't already, please subscribe! Does the y connector connect to the garden hose or is there an adaptor there also?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 9 лет назад
Doreen Kimball , the end of the Y connector where the two sides merge ends in a male threaded fitting that the supply hose will thread directly onto. Just make sure the Y adapter is the type that is used for connecting up a washing machine. Also, I've learned a lesson on the supply hose. It's better to use a steel braided hose than a plain or rubber type. I learned the hard way - burst hose, and a massive amount of lost water. The steel braiding addresses two issues: 1.) rotting of the hose by UV rays from the sun, and, 2.) superior resistance to water pressure. The steel braided hoses are right there in the section of your home center that has the Y Connector and other hose bibbs and hoses to connect laundry machines. Thanks for watching our video! Regards, DFJ
@israelgonzalez171
@israelgonzalez171 2 года назад
By leaving the water on, it won't burst? Do to pressure build up????
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 года назад
Israel, there isn't sufficient pressure in almost all domestic water systems to burst the components, especially if you use braided supply lines. The only time we've burst a line is when I left the unit out a bit too late at the end of the season and the water in the faucet froze. Not good, had to replace the faucet. Best, DFJ

What do you call the fitting from the treated faucet to the y connector?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 5 лет назад
Ruben, are you referring to the adapter that goes from standard 1/2" pipe thread to hose thread? It took me a bit to figure out how to adapt these two, until I understood that the thread on the faucet pipes that go through the deck of the sink are standard 1/2" pipe thread. However, the thread on the Y-adapter or a direct garden hose, or water lines used to connect up washing machines are all hose thread - much coarser. So, when you go to the hardware or plumbing store, just describe it as a brass 1/2" female to male hose adapter. That should get you what you need. Let me know how it turns out! Best, DFJ
