Installing Atlas

In this video, I install the Atlas #305 Turntable and the Atlas #304 Motor Drive. I have a block system on my DC layout, so I used the Atlas #220 Controller to run the turntable and the Atlas #215 Selector to run the track.
This video also applies to the Atlas #303 Turntable. The only difference is the number of stalls.

Great install Mark. Adding a turntable to the layout really gives a new dimension to running trains. Ever since I put mine in running trains has been more fun. I hope you enjoy it.

I remember seeing an article in Model Railroader, where the had sunk the actual table, installed a bridge unit, making it look more like a Walthers turntable, very interesting project

Sounds interesting. I would have loved to sink mine a bit, but to sink it evenly all around would have been too difficult.

You can run into trouble trying to sink your turn table in the foam trust me I tried with my old ho scale layout.

I think some of your funniest videos are when you’re trying to be serious and explain in detail, with your robot voice. Those wires you trimmed do look much fresher. Lol. Nice quiet operation on that turntable.

Nice video. I have one of these Atlas turntables from the 1960s (with brass rails). The older ones don't have as many positions for the track. I don't use it anymore, but brings back a lot of memories....Well done video......

Nice video. I am looking to install a turntable, but I am looking for a more realistic and quieter operation, so it looks like an Atlas is off the list for me. I'd already crossed the Hornby turntable off my list, as it has exactly the same flaws.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m a mom trying to set this up for my train loving son. Do I have to use brown and yellow wire? Can I just use the red? And where can I find that wire? Thank you for all your help
@MMRails
@MMRails 8 месяцев назад
Hi, not stupid at all. There are a lot of wires! I used brown and yellow but you can use any colour. It’s the connections that are important. Different colours just helps with organization. You can find the wire at any hobby shop, hardware store, or Amazon. I really recommend reading over Atlas’ directions. I bought the book but I’m sure they’re online somewhere. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing Donald. Unfortunately I no longer own this layout and no, I never found a way to quiet the motor. It did make quite the racket.
@Stussmeister

A very nice video and explanation. I'm looking to purchase this same turntable and motor, though I have two questions: 1) Is this turntable compatible with sectional track (where the track is molded to the roadbed)? 2) I'll be running my trains via a DCC controller that does not have an A/C terminal for accessories, so I'm wondering if I should either invest in a "wall-wart" A/C adapter, connect the turntable to a DC power pack that I have, or try another option.
@MMRails
@MMRails 3 года назад
Thank you! I don’t have any concrete answers unfortunately but my guess is for 1) you could probably transition from the turntable to the sectional track with one small piece of snap track. And 2) I would use your DC power pack. Give it a try. I’d love to hear an update. -Mark

@Stussmeister 3 года назад
@@MMRails You're quite welcome, and thank you for your prompt response :). I did some measuring of my locomotives and rolling stock, though, and realized they might be too big for this turntable, as most of my coaches and locomotives are slightly larger than the turntable's just-under-23cm radius.
@mooseygoosey3749
@mooseygoosey3749 Год назад
How do you get the track to stay in place?
@MMRails
@MMRails Год назад
Most of the track on that layout was pinned down with small pins into the foam. We glued a small section down. Even the turntable was pinned down to the foam if I remember correctly. It’s been awhile.

I don't understand how a loco can be turned through 180 degrees and not short out the tracks when it exits as the turntable and external track are now at opposite polarities (in dc)?
@MMRails
@MMRails 4 года назад
Science man, science. Actually, I think if you drive on forward, you have to exit in reverse. It's been awhile since I've used it (sold now) but if I remember correctly, you have to leave the same way you entered. Make sense?

would the turntable it's self be compatible with Bachmann EZ track ?
@MMRails
@MMRails 5 лет назад
I can’t say for sure, but I don’t see why not. The only thing is you’d have to have a very small “bridge” piece of track to connect the EZ track to the turntable. Since the track actually sits on the turntable, EZ track wouldn’t fit.

@MMRails
@MMRails 3 года назад
Hmm... top of my head... did you increase the throttle speed? It’s been awhile since I owned that and wired it up. At least it works. That’s half the battle. If I remember correctly, if you increase the throttle speed it actually turns the table faster.

Surprised you could not find some small screws long enough for the job. I have a box that are 2.5" long. Well, its installed and working, that's all that matters. I still have to pick up a motor for mine. I was waiting to get a used one but none still have not come along. I hate to pay the $50 they want for a new one.
@MMRails
@MMRails 7 лет назад
You have 2.5 inch long screws that are super thin?? Put them in your next video for I do not believe you. I looked everywhere. And then I pondered...makes sense that the longer the screw, the wider it should be or else what would it support? Too thin would break. And yes, I paid through the nose on that whole system.
