In this video I show my quick and easy way to install auger tie-down anchors to hold down a carport. I made a tool that allows me to use an air impact wrench to drive the anchors into the ground easily and with almost no effort. Please visit www.mdpub.com for more information.

Superb trick! Thank you very much for sharing it with us!

Great idea on forming a tool to drive the hurricane anchors into the ground! FYI, you should drive hurricane anchors into the ground at a 45 degree angle, to provide a stronger anchor. With each side at a 45 degree angle, the anchors won't pull out in heavy wind. With the anchors at 45 degrees, there will always be a side where the anchors are being forced INTO the ground by the wind. That's a super strong anchor. Hope this helps.

my friend thought i was weird for putting them in at an angle. i actually didn't know that was the proper way but i had to fix a leaning tree with ratchet straps so it didnt make much sense for them to be perpendicular to the ground

Thanks: I had anchors that needed to be removed and I had installed them before with a three point hitch auger, but it doesn't reverse so this was the perfect solution to be able to reverse and back them out of the ground.

If any of you are anchoring down a shed or larger building remember to dig down a foot or more depending on the length of your anchor a 10" wide hole around your anchor to pour concrete.

Hi Mike. This is fantastic. The only issue of course is that I dont weld so I have no way of getting one of those cool metal devices that you connect to your Pneumatic wrench. Considering that earth augers are commonly sold why on earth dont people make that tool to sell to others? Mystery for sure.

That's a really cool idea Mike! .. Love your videos and ideas since years! .. Whenever I have to do similar stuff I start by slowly watering let's say 10 Liters of water direct to the location 1 day before .. I repeat that ~10 hours bofore starting the real work. The water sinks down and loosens the ground .. maybe not completely to the depth you need for your application .. but it sure helps.

In my case it had been raining for a week prior. I was standing in shallow water while I was doing it. Couldn't get much wetter unless it was up to my knees. That did help soften things up some.

The drilled bolt holes in the anchor is a dead give away. You bolt them to the side of the carport base.

I’m doing mine today but Half of my carport is on paved driveway and the other half is hanging off the driveway onto a grass slope. Im going to dig a bury the first railroad tie and anchor that with these anchors lag bolted into the base tie. I’ll stack another tie on top of base tie and I’ll be level. Im going to lag bolt the top tie to the base tie and then anchor them together with heavy steel mending plates along the face of the ties. Then I will lag bolt the carport base to the ties. The concrete driveway side of the carport base will be anchored directly to the concrete using expandable anchors like they use when installing vehicle lifts on an auto shop. The wind will ripe the roof off of the carport before it ever yanks the anchors and ties out of the ground. I love your tool set up…..pretty cool. I’m wondering if I could fashion something like that up to my Bosch hammer drill using a through bolt through the pre drilled bolt holes in the anchor and welding something up to fit the hammer drill.

@omegageek64
@omegageek64 2 года назад
Sorry for the late reply. I'd probably cut a slot in the pipe nipple big enough for the eyelet with an angle grinder. Then the same tool could do either type.

Nice. How many of these anchors per side?
@omegageek64
@omegageek64 2 года назад
I used four on the side sitting on dirt. The side sitting on concrete got 5 expansion anchors. All this will just keep the thing from blowing away or shifting in moderate winds. If we get a strong hurricane, all bets are off. If the wind doesn't rip the anchors out of the ground, then it will probably strip the sheet metal off the thing.
