We've been having hawk attacks on our chickens so we put up this 50 x 50 bird net. It's been up for two years now and has kept the hawks away successfully. Since this video posted, I upgraded to a lot better netting that's nylon, UV resistant and much stronger and easier to work with. Hi folks. This net in this video was pretty flimsy and hard to work with. It lasted two years with having to be repaired once from a light icing that tore it down. In September 2021 I put up a new net that's UV rated nylon and much heavier. I also switched to Mil-Spec paracord. This new net and cord worked much better. I also redid the fence to permanent 6' 2x4 wire fence because coyotes figured out a way to get around or over the electric fencing and it wasn't stopping them any longer. I still kept an electric wire on the outside of the permanent fence about 3' from the ground, and also one running accross the top. Here's a link to the upgraded netting: amzn.to/3BZlF1y and the para cord: amzn.to/3k1EB9Q

Why not build a good solid 2 by 4 wood frame and run chicken wire over it. You can run Support beams from the ground and make 2 by 4 support from the top and sides and the middle of the coop as well. You can double the spread of wire and secure it down tight on the frame. Thus it holds up well and your done. The beams could also be painted with primer and topped with a pleasing top coat for durability and looks. Thus your working with material that will be strong and will last. One last thought here using galvanized screws can allow for easy modifications to the project cage for expansion and quick openings of it with a battery drill driver. You still use staples to hold down the wire net but screws can be used to fasten sections of the frame top in sections creating a sort of quick doorway for cleaning the coop or making modification to the project. Wishing you the very best. Thank you.

I use white fishing nets and they last a long time. They are designed for water so I went with that my 2nd time of nets. I used close line cables instead of rope and it really made it tight, so I can walk under every part of the yard. It’s like 6-8 feet high. Living in an older neighborhood of 3/4 to one acre yards I clean up chicken droppings often. Just like I do with my dogs. Keeps the smells down and neighbors love the dried out fertilizer for composting. I had a 2nd pair of hands helping hold the netting and it was still a pain. All day job for sure but I tried my best to do a good job to not have to do it again for a long while. Good luck to all and happy egg laying.

Hi Deena. The military grade para cord and this new nylon UV rated netting is much heavier and it's holding up nice and tight so far. I'm able to walk around under mine as well. That makes things Sooo much more pleasant. No predator losses since. Thanks for stopping in and commenting.
@southernladywithmanyhats7428
I have sewn them together to make them the width and length I needed. You just have to cut paper 1/2" wide as long of sheets that you have. Then lap the netting over onto itself and lay the paper down over the netting and sew on the paper. When done just tear off the paper.
@JeromeBeeFarm

That's a neat idea. I switched out this net with some heavier netting and I weaved it together with parachute cord. It works great. This stuff didn't last 2 years. The new stuff was much easier to work with and didn't tangle near as bad. I updated the link below.

I feel your pain! I've dealt with bird netting before, but the stuff you were putting up looks a lot worse than what I used! I had used 2 different ones. The thinner stuff collapsed after a heavy snow. The chickens were NOT happy! Got a heavier gauge stuff that worked better and was easier to handle. Tried to find it again and was unsuccessful. If I ever find it again I will snatch it up!

Oh my, it was terrible. I'll never mess with that junk again. If I have to enclose it, I'll just make a permanent coop and run and enclose it with chicken wire. I had a crow fly into it this morning and get hung up. I had some ribbons on it so birds could see it, so I put up even more. I can't imagine getting a hawk out of it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

Hey Mr. CB. How's it going? This would be good in your garden to put over strawberries or something like that. I had a crow get in it today and tore it up a little. I can't imagine what a hawk would do. lol I was hoping they would hit it and bounce off. This stuff grabs everything it touches. I never saw anything like it. Picked up every little twig and heavy grass it touched. I doubt it will survive an ice storm. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

Great ideas on how to do netting. We just ordered some of the good stuff, used the stuff you have for a bit and even a snake got tangled in it and died. Sticks, grass, leaves is a mess. Anyway, thanks for the tips. We can do some hooks on the roof line and make it so that it's easier to remove when we moved the coop. We've lost 4 chickens and a guinea (she was lame) to the darned hawks and since we can't get rid of the hawks we have strung up stuff around the hen house making it un-movable even though it's, like yours, on wheels. Once we get the netting we'll be moving once again, premier fencing has been great around here.

Yeah, the first net I used in this video was terrible. Flimsy and hard to work with. I guess you get what you pay for. The stuff I put up this year is really tough and easier to work with. I also used UV rated parachute cord on the edges and where I joined pieces. This should last a lot longer. I also used those little hooks on the edge of the coop. I wish I could move the coop, but it isn't happening with this net on there and now that I've switched to the permanent 6' fence for the coyotes. Coyotes were jumping over the Premier 1 fence. Good luck.

Hey Joe. I just put up new net last week and it's UV nylon, and a lot stronger and heavier than the stuff in this video and it worked way better. There's a link to it in the description. It was a lot easier to work with, but was still a pain. I ran parachute cord on the edges and that's how I connected it to the coop and edges and also joined pieces together with the cord. That cord in this video was from Harbor Freight and wasn't UV resistant and the cover completely disintegrated. I used Mil-Spec para cord this time.

Thanks for the ideas as well as some ideas from the comments 👍
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 2 года назад
The netting I used in this video wasn't very strong and only lasted a couple years. I replaced it with a lot stronger variety this year and I'm really pleased with it. It's easier to handle and you can pull it a lot tighter. I think I got 50 x 50 sections to do my entire run, plus I ran it back around the back side of that garden you see there. Because it's heavy, you can pull it pretty tight. I put parachute cord around the edges where I connected it on the sides. Also, birds can see it, where they couldn't see the other as well and no birds accidentally fly into it. I think I pinned a link to the new stuff I used in the top comment. Good luck.

Those are some expensive eggs and pampered chickens! I've got a covered run that is enclosed with chicken wire so my hens are just as pampered. They are on their own in the free range area. We have hawks but none so far have ever gone after the chickens. My biggest problem is wild sparrows eating the mash both in the hen house and outside feeder in the run.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 5 лет назад
Yeah, that first dozen were pretty pricey. lol I was hoping to keep mine where I could move it around so I don't wind up with a bare chicken run. I throw out some scratch in the evening and they eat most of it up before other birds get to it. Sometimes there's some crows in there picking up the leftovers. A permanently covered run would be the way to go if you can't keep the hawks off. Thanks for watching and commenting Nancy.

I haven’t considered that. That’s not a bad idea. It would have to have strong poles for ice load. We had an ice storm last October and it completely wiped it out. I bought some heavier net, but haven’t got it up there yet. I had to switch from that electric fence to a 6’ permanent fence because coyotes were getting past it or over it somehow this summer and wiped out almost all of my hens. I added electric wire halfway up and across the top. Also added a digging barrier. I’ve found that hawks don’t bother them except in the late fall and winter. Probably has to do with available food sources. I’ve been planning an update video on this setup. Thanks for stopping in.

Hawk and owl problems. Here's an effective solution, invest in large solar panels. You'll need large multiple panels around your chicken area. It works very well in the summer time as these predator birds fly over. Make sure your chickens don't fly over these solar panels.

It lasted two years. One small ice storm took down some of it and I was able to get it back up. There was a big ice storm going into this winter and it took it out bad enough that I left it off.
