In this video i share how easy it is to retro fit a DAB radio into a caravan. Ive chosen the Pioneer MVX-X580DAB car radio, and im using a Vision Plus Status 570 antenna to receive the digital signal. I only needed to purchase a splitter cable, and the install was a breeze. i also show some different antenna configurations that will also work with this chosen method.

Thank you so much for this video Dan. Prima Leisure wanted £63 for a fly lead. I purchased one from Ebay for £5.45 with free postage. I've just fitted it to the Pioneer radio in my 8ft wide Brindisi. The dab now works superb 😊

Thanks for this Dan. We have the same radio fitted in our recently purchased motorhome, except the stingy things didn't wire it up for DAB. Worth watching just for the tip about the antenna splitter, which I've just ordered via your link. Very helpful.

Hi Dan. I have installed the same Radio. It's ok I just found re-tuning it a bit if a faff and it keep running through the demo cycle if we changed locations. Other than this it is great for the money. Thanks Phil

Hi Dan. Very informative as usual. I don’t usually have problems with technology but I always struggle with car radios. They always seem to have silly little buttons which all seem to do 1001 different things depending on which mode they’re in. I don’t use the caravan radio much but every time I do I have to get the manual out to work it. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, good job. Steve

Well that's great, Dan. I bought the same head unit with our new caravan, mainly for the bluetooth and ipod connectivity. Up until now I was unable to use the DAB. Thanks!

Not sure if you do or not, but I use it with the ARC app, which has some great features, including being able to personalise lighting and display options, sound level etc. Essentially making your phone a remote control. www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/arc

Same here Simon, DAB doesn't work at all. Anywhere. With any kind of aerial. FM and BT are OK but constant default to demo mode and inability to switch off display at night without removing faceplate are highly irritating.

That's a bit spooky Dan, I have done exactly the same job on my van this week (Swift Challenger 584) because we want to listen to 6 music when away as well. Is it just us "posh gypsies" that listen to this station !!!! Like you, found it very easy to install in less than 30 mins. Nick T.

You should fit the handsfree mic Dan, in the corner you sit, imagine being sprawled out with a large G&T and suitably salty nibbles, and the phone rings, you can remain in situ and do hands free calling.

Nice one, I've had all sorts of trouble trying to get a DAB aerial to work on our old motorhome. We have the old flying saucer type Status aerial & it was hopeless at everything. We've now upgraded to a Status 570 & I'd been wondering if I could use it to receive DAB signals, so it'll be time to give this method a go. Many thanks...Rob.

Hi Dan, thanks for the video, found it very informative. We're new to caravanning, in fact only got the van about a month ago. The antenna and dab radio setup looks very similar on our van. However, we have one small problem and wondered if anyone else had encountered the same. Basically when we turn on the an LED light, the DAB radio signal cuts out. Comes back on again when the light it turned off. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Not all caravans come with this as standard. The phoenix, certainly doesn't.

Still not convinced about DAB. We use it at home but the transmitter network is patchy up here so we rarely get to use it in the van.

Many thanks for this informative vlog. Quick question regarding the bluetooth. Will the bluetooth from the radio link to an external bluetooth speaker?

Hi Peter, no it doesn't. However you could buy a Bluetooth audio transmitter (like this amzn.to/2UX6D7e) and wire it to a Line Out of the radio, which would achieve what you're after i think. Dan

Did you connect the radio dab and FM inputs of the radio via the splitter to the FM output of the Status 570 or to one of the TV outputs?

Great job Dan, DAB is far better sound quality and a better choice of stations. We don’t use our radio in the van but I’m sure if it was DAB we would. Another future job for me! cheers Martin 👍

Need at least 160 kbps to match FM quality using MP2 codec. 6Music is 128 kbps, many commercial stations far lower (and mono!) www.astra2sat.com/radio/uk-digital-radio-bitrates/

Hi Dan. Excellent video again mate. Quick question. I upgraded our van aerial to a status 570 which supports DAB with the amplifier output for radio. I do not have the extra Co ax and red power lead coming out from the aerial tube though? Will I need to do anything else other than buy the FM / DAB aerial adaptor for the radio end? Keep thd great informative videos coming! 👍👌

Hi Dan, the link for the universal loom doesn't work .. I have just bought a DAB radio and am about to try the installation .. but no doubt I will need the aerial connector and wiring loom .. so I need to order those first .. thanks for the useful videos

Great video Dan has usual i did this last September but ive noticed i have to reset the radio every time i use it has it don’t keep settings has it would in a car is yours the same ??

Hi Mark, i've just checked mine, and it does remember the settings and stored stations. So, in that case it sounds like it could be down to the same old culprit. On car radios, there are 3 cables for power. 1 for ground (GND) 1 for a permanent 12v supply and one for the 12v ignition. The idea is the permanent supply holds settings and memories etc, the ignition 12v supply switches the radio on and off. It sounds like those two 12v supplies are around the wrong way, so when the caravan master switch is off, the permanent 12v supply is cut to the radio, hence loosing settings etc. Its just a thought. Hi Dan, I have quite an old van by your standards, and all I have is a telescopic aerial at the front of the caravan for FM/ AM. Should I think about replacing this with an amplified version? or a separate DAB aerial. Also, my caravan is essentially an aluminum box, will that have any impact on the reception if I use another aerial? Looking forward to your reply.

Hi Shaun, If you have just a standalone antenna, like a telescopic one, you can change this for an amplified version. you will need to supply 12V to it for the amplifier to work. Another option is you can just install a seperate DAB antenna - these also will require +12v to them as they contain a small hi-gain amplifier in order to maximise the signal. I hope that helps.

Have installed this in our 2018 Sprite. Bluetooth works fine but can't pick up a single DAB station, despite being in a strong signal area (portable DAB picks up all stations). Have tried aerial splitter and dedicated DAB aerial to no avail ☹️

Only 80 kbps mono on DAB, more's the pity...if you have 4G reception and a data plan you'll get far better sound quality (and stereo!) streaming it on a smartphone through the dedicated PR app or TuneIn, via the aux in socket of the head unit.

What happens if you want to take or make a phone call while your phone is connected to the stereo? Won't you have to turn off bluetooth before you can talk?

I think ive seen the setting, that you can disable the phone bit, but still maintain the BT audio.

After watching your blog, i want out and git a new poineer headunit and the lead you used, DAB dosnt work at all, just says NO SIGNAL? Bt is fine

Hmm, that’s odd. One thing to check, make sure the cable is plugged in to the DAB socket - sometimes they can disconnect when fitting. Also, if connected - try to update the service list (retune) and the antenna is extended and the Amp is switched on.

@@TheTrudgians I pulled it in and out about 3 times to check. When I first put it in ,it bid a list update straight away about 45 channels, worked for 5 seconds then no signal.

@@markkeeble4648 ok, that suggests a poor signal. So, it could be adjust the antenna, checking connections all the way to the aerial and back of radio - and maybe switching off any LED lights or WiFi router near by. I’ve a video all about TV signals that will help if that’s the case. 👍

You cannot use the splitter in the link provided with an active (amplified ) like the ring that you show in the video.

The radio output is non-amplified.

@@TheTrudgians on the vision amp I agree but the black ring telescopic is active. Dab is band 3 so my preference would be to replace the vision amp with a vision plus vp3 or vp5. All DAB is vertically polarised so aerial must always then be in vertical position.

Why is it that all after market car radios seem to be full of animated bright digital displays that look like they belong in the 90’s. Car companies don’t do that with their displays so why are after market displays so awful? They all seem to be like that. I guess that must appeal to 17 year olds when they buy a 15 year old Saxo and the first thing they do is replace the stereo. It would be nice to see a nice interface that didn’t look like an 80’s Disco. I’d be keen on upgrading ours for exactly the same reasons but I’d really like something that looked a little less East17 and more Archers!

The colour changing is a part of the demo mode. You can change the colour to blend in with your cars colour scheme, so it doesn't look out of place. But i agree, finding the "setting" to disable this was a challenge.

@@TheTrudgians They all just seem to be flashy and full of animated old school digital displays shouting - look at me. What's wrong with a nice simple screen like you get on a mobile phone or modern car. A volume knob, a source button, some presets and probably a menu button for the less accessed settings is probably all that is needed.

Problem being that evertime you disconnect the battery you have to reprogram the radio included the demo mode

Had this piece of junk for about a month now. Does not pick up any DAB signal anywhere in the country, either using the caravan aerial with splitter or separate DAB aerial. Constantly gets stuck in demo mode and have to faff about with menus to cancel that. "Switching it off" silences audio but leaves illuminated display on. In a small caravan where the bed is in the same area as the radio, even with the cupboard door closed over it you get an annoying glow from through the gaps. Zero stars from me.☹️

It may be that you have a faulty head unit, but reading your comments, there could be a couple of things to check, make sure you have a constant 12v feed and a switched 12v feed wired the correct way. This could be why you constantly get the demo mode, and why any DAB stations are erased etc. The issues you report however, do not sound right at all. Start by checking the wiring, then if that is unsuccessful, send it back - as its clearly defective. Hope that helps, let me know how you get on Dan

@@TheTrudgians Thanks Dan. Sorry for grumbling, but seems to be everything you buy these days! I did a straightforward swap like you - our van is a 2018 Sprite so presume the wiring is up to date. As I say, FM and Bluetooth work fine but DAB always reports "no signal" whatever aerial I plug in (portable radio picks up DAB fine). So I think you may be right, probably faulty head unit. Trouble is, doesn't give any confidence that replacement one will be better... Cheers, Gary

Hi Gary, i wonder if you have a faulty splitter, or connection to the DAB antenna, before you swap the unit, just check that everything is okay. However, going back to your original points - that wouldnt explain teh random demo mode... Hope you can swap it ok. a 2018 Sprite should be perfect for this. I know others who have done this mod on Sprites in and around the age of yours. Nothing worse to spend hours installing somthing to find its broke. Take care Dan
