Happy Friday Everyone!!!
Thank you for coming back to my channel to watch another one of my videos, I greatly appreciate it!
This week I wanted to expand a little on the last video in which I shared some basic information to build your own cabinets. This week, I am using that same cabinet and sharing some tips on installing drawers and drawer slides. Personally, I felt a little lost and intimidated the first time I tried to use drawer slide. This video will cover some of the things I have learned and hopefully will help you guys and gals out if it is your first time.
As usual, I have left some affiliate links below to the tools that I use in this video. Feel free to check them out for more information or should you be interested in purchasing them.

As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ru-vid.comUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!

In the UK, we changed to metric years ago. There were many who didn't like it but it makes so much sense. I do understand however why some don't want it. I'm English but live in Germany. I am so interested in Rockler stuff, however most of it is imperial if not all of it. Also a lot of the US RU-vid channels I follow (Jay Bates for example and you Jason) only offer their build plans in imperial. All those fractions of an inch are confusing whereas working with millimeters is easy. Love your stuff Jason 🤘

Love your videos and your approach! I've been using K&V slides and the cabinet member installs 2 mm in from the front of the cabinet (frameless), which aligns it perfectly with Euro-style/System32 cabinets. And then the drawer member installs 3 mm back from the front. The net effect then is that your drawer sits about 1mm proud of the cabinet, which is perfect for an overlay drawer front. I didn't realize how important this was when I was doing inset drawers. But with overlays, you need that extra 1 mm for the drawer to have enough travel to fully slide in and engage the detent that holds it shut. Otherwise the drawer front blocks it from sliding in fully. For an inset drawer I had better results with the drawer member installing closer to flush. This is all well-documented in the Knape & Vogt install sheet ... which I only glossed over and then couldn't figure out why my drawers wouldn't push in far enough to engage the detent. Need that 1 mm sitting proud!

One thing I'd like to add here for fine-tuning. While plywood is supposed to be flat and straight, I'm amazed just how many times a cabinet side will bow. With full extension drawer slides, this can create a real nightmare as the fit is pretty exacting. For a simple 16th of an inch a washer behind your mounting screw can really help to fine-tune the slides so they don't bind. If the cabinet is an eighth of an inch off (not that uncommon) when plywood bows, I found putting a stretcher bar in the center of the cabinet with some pocket holes helps to pull the sides in. If the bow is inward, the stretcher bar just pushes it out. Usually you can hide it underneath the bottom of the drawer. This brings up the next point of making your drawer a bit smaller in height than the drawer front. All this assuming a cabinet without a face frame, and side mounted slides as shown in the video.

Awesome video! I recently had a drawer slide fail on a deep, heavy kitchen drawer with 22" full-extension slides. I am no carpenter, and was puzzled by how to install the glides on the cabinet itself, to get even gaps all around the drawer face, consistent with the rest of the cabinets. Richelieu's instructions were useless to me, but I watched your video twice, and the job came out perfectly. I learned with inches and fractions, but switched to primarily metric 20 years ago, when my job demanded accurate measurements. Thank you Bent's!

Got tired of using my construction calculator when dealing with additions and subtractions of mixed 1/8s, 1/16s, etc. Dividing also easier (ex: what’s 17-3/16 divided in 3 sections?) Dealing with mm and cm way easier. Got my tape measure at Woodcraft.

The center line of the first 5 mm screw hole in the drawer slide is 35 mm from the front of the slide. The front column of shelf pin holes are located at 37 mm from the front of the cabinet. This would leave about a 2 mm, about 5/64 in., from the front of the cabinet to the front of the drawer slide. That's what causes the drawer slide to be slightly inset. The drawer slide has other 5 mm screw holes located in whole numbers of 32 mm increments. That information helps determine where the back column of shelf pin holes are located.

It’s way easier to leave the slides together and use the edge of the cabinet side to line up on the drawer itself. Make them flush then use a small shim when installing the cabinet side to hold it up off the bottom. This takes half the work out and most of the alignment and measurements. As well as common issues.

I think the drawer member should have a 1/16 to 1/8 inch set back. Which allows the slide mechanism to stop the drawer rather than the face plate of the drawer which will cause a noise.
@BenjaminGSlade
@BenjaminGSlade Год назад
At 17:04, when he's measuring the edge to hole-center distance, he's measuring that on the piece that gets mounted to the cabinet side, not the piece that gets mounted to the moving drawer. But when he draws the line, that's on the moving drawer part. It's obvious once you understand that, but he should've said this.

Great video. Nice and clear. Can you install these with the slide attached to the top of the drawer side (not along the top of the drawer) so that the drawer slide is flush with the underside of the cabinet top? Just like you did on the bottom, but inverted. I ask because all the pictures and video I have seen show the slide either in the middle of the drawer side or along the bottom. I like the idea of using the cabinet frame as a reference rather than measuring up from the bottom. Cheers!

@@bentswoodworking I have a question for you.. I'm building a dresser for my son (novice and pretty much learning as I go which has presented some challenges :/) but, I'm really struggling with the drawer slides. I finally got two in and rolling smooth (it's a six drawer dresser), but I'm stuck on the third. The slides are level, and when I adhere them to the drawer they're level too but reallllly don't want to close. Note, I didn't watch your video before I built my drawers and they were slightly too large (1/8 inch) so I used my band saw to shave down the sides vs. completely rebuilding the drawers. They fit nicely now but no matter what I do I can get a smooth roll on the slides. Any ideas? Thanks! #rookiemom

Typical RU-vid Name could be an issue with the slides or they still may be pinching somewhere.

So true about using metric. It’s just too easy.

For beginner wood workers, it would help to indaicate the "thickness" of the material and slides instead od "width". Could be a little confusing. Otherwise, a nice and clear instructional video. I tried to teach my students the benefits of the metric system over our "inches and feet". Most wouldn"t change. Old habits die hard. lol. Thanks.

I also find myself using metric more often. However There are awesome fraction calculator apps for cell phones.

Quick question: Is there a reason for putting the drawer slide at the bottom of the drawer rather than at the middle?

Personal preference for me I guess. Easier for me to lay everything out

Brent - Excellent video. Thank you. One questions I have is how wide should my drawer be I. Relation to the cabinet? How much should be allowed for the thickness of the pull out slide in performing the calculations. Thank you
