Installing MaxxAir Fan in Fiberglass Roof / diy van conversion

This is my rough process for installing a Maxx Air Fan Deluxe in the fiberglass roof of my 1993 Vandura Camper Van. I am by no means an expert on fiberglass or videography, but I thought it would be nice to watch someone else convert an older, non-Sprinter van.

I have such a similar van! With the fiberglass roof - thanks for making this! ALL the other videos are sprinter vans with metal roofs.

I just started working on my 1999 Chevy express 1500 fiberglass high top and it’s a pain in the ass. A lot of work to put in. I’m taking it easy cause the point of this is saving money so. Good luck to all van Life people out there. Stay safe.

You're so right about the dominance of sprinter conversions! My van is very similar to yours and it has the same exact wood/metal covered cardboard roof! Thanks for the tips!!

Very nice install. I will be putting one in my fiberglass conversion van roof this spring so, this was very helpful. Thank you.

Great choice of fan! I’ve been DIYing trailers now vans, and from the rv background, I would suggest DIcor RV lap sealant for the caulk up of seam and screw heads. If you need an additional coat to seal (the dicor SHOULD do it by itself), i’d personally recommend Eternabond tape. Don’t settle for cheaper imitations. Thing about eternabond though is that the name is serious. It is very difficult to remove. Thanks for making this video. I just bought a 94 Dodge van with the tall top. It will need a fan. All vans do!!!😊

Stoked you did that for me to see cause I have the same roof in my van which is a 97 Chevy Express and a brand new max air the same one you got I think. Mine is a 7500 But I've been kinda scared to cut a hole in my roof! I've looked for videos on it multiple times and you're right there are none! I said I'm going to check one more time before I go for it. When you say "through the wood" do bvb you mean you have a wood ceiling under the tapestry? Mine is just thin carpet and then the fiberglass, pretty sure. Was your roof thick enough to mount it without building it up, besides the butyl tape that is. I may have to build up a wood frame like they suggest. Thanks for testing the waters. My butyl tape and silicone I ordered will be here tomorrow so it's almost time! It will be so nice to have some circulation!

Sorry for the late reply, but mine had a layer of plywood between the fiberglass roof. I went to a junkyard before and cut into a fiberglass roof to see what was inside and it also had some plywood. Hope the conversion is going good!

Did you ever add a wood frame to screw the game into? Did you add framing to the whole roof?
@kendracole4948
@kendracole4948 4 года назад
No wood framing on the roof, I wanted to be able to stand up, so just reflectix and a tapestry. It is hot in the summer, but I don't think insulating it more could ever beat southern heat. Good luck!

I have a 96 G30 with a raised roof I'm going to install a maxxair fan on and wanted to see how yours was holding up. Is your roof still leak free? It was pretty cool to see you posted an update a year ago, so I thought I'd ask.
@kendracole4948

Still leak-free, been to lots of states and National Parks and rolling strong. I did basically the same thing when attaching my solar panel just without the bondo. Lots of caulk and flex seal. Happy Travels!! :)

Howdy from Texas! Its super humid here almost always. I was wondering if you could share how you insulated the roof of your fiberglass van? I have a 2000 dodge ram with fiberglass roof. I've insulated everything but the roof. I just cant seem to find a method that would prevent mold buildup do to condensation. Once i figure this out I'll be able to move forward and install a fan. Might you have any words of wisdom? Thanks a ton for sharing your fan video. That is super helpful.

RICO PHOTOFX I’m about to do mine and honestly, it depends on where you live. But I live in regions where we get plenty of snow in the winter, so there’s no way I’d do anything other than spray foam. Seals everything up so there’s no chance of leaks/condensation and has the highest R value
@kendracole4948
@kendracole4948 4 года назад
I just used a layer of reflectix and spray adhesive. Looking back I would've done something better, but I also like being able to stand up in the van and if I did anything thicker, I couldn't do that. So its a compromise. The condensation hasn't been an issue yet!

My crack addicted wife for no reason asked me to thumbs this down. She was reheating some pasta carbonara she had come up on..a whole 5 gallon bucket that we had to make room for in our fridge. I don't know where she gets this stuff.. she has a life I'm totally unaware of, and now I'm eating this weird rando bucket of carbonara..its what we have. I don't get it either. But thanks for the video. I secretly erased the "thumbs down" when she was in the bathroom for one of her 4 hour sessions in there (wth goes on in there?)

The only thing that adds any room is the knob to open and close the fan manually. Still no leaks or problems driving down the road. My only issue is the spray adhesive for my tapestry doesn't bode well in Southern heat and humidity. Thanks for your comment!

@kendracole4948 4 года назад
@@ehlai1676 I'm pretty sure I used the same ones I used for the fan install with the tape and silicone on top. I had some leak issues where I drilled holes for the solar wires, but more silicone and flex seal seemed to fix the job! Good luck! @@kendracole4948 I only have a 100w panel installed at the back, giving room for two though. Not having a roof fan seems hot in Southern Ontario during the day...as the original insulation for the Ford 2000 e150 passenger van is pretty bad. Would try to connect the alternator to the battery.

I have a 1988 econoline im attempting to do the same, although I won’t be insulating (because I’m in California) did the fam sit flush on the inside of your roof or did you add insulation or some sort of a frame on the interior? Thanks for the video!

The fiberglass roof just has one layer of Reflectix with a cloth tapestry over it. I just used some spray adhesive and staples to hold it up and it's been holding, even in the heat of summer. Good luck on your conversion!!

I'm assuming you mean the white plastic piece? That I roughly measured the extra overhang and used an angle grinder to cut it (a hand saw will also work, it's thin plastic) and then just used 4 screws to attach it. Hope that helps!
