Alright, so this video is gonna be a fun one! A few months ago, we took a look at installing Windows 95 from 29 floppy disks. Today, we're taking that a step further. Office 97 was the last version of Microsoft Office that was available on floppy disks. 46 of them to be exact. Let's go!

Yes, that would actually be quite common. Back in the days I worked at Microsoft Product Support and the #1 support call would be "Can you please send disk 44 because it is corrupt". And that almost always resulted in disappointment, because Microsoft always sent out a complete package of floppies. Main reason for that, was that the software was updated and the #44 floppy image would have had something different on it. So the customer had to start from scratch. Another fun fact is that Office 4.3 initially started out on 69 floppies. Then Microsoft started to use a new imaging technique called DMF (which uses 1.7MB disk images and thus greatly reducing the number of floppies needed). Not really sure anymore, but Office 4.3c was then deliver in "only" 40 something disks.

I remember buying software in the 90's when it took up to 4 or 5 floppy disks to install. By that time CD-ROM was becoming the dominate way to install larger software programs, and therefore would ONLY come out on CD. Didn't know this was a thing, 46 floppy disks! WOW! Microsoft really wanted everybody to be able to buy Office 97.

As an IT Support Technician all through the 90s and early 2000s this type of thing was the bane of my life. Must have installed hundreds, if not thousands of operating systems and software from floppy disc over the years. Eventually we moved to a server based installation system where we'd just use Norton Ghost to install a basic image with all the standard OS and software, and then install additional software from a Windows package manager on an installation server.

I find it interesting that Office 97 was bigger then Windows 95 itself. Uses double the amount of floppy disks. I know this is Windows 98, but back in 1997 Windows 98 didn't exist yet.

I still have my original of Office 97. It was on a CD-ROM! Even my first PC bought in 1994 (a 486DX2-66) had a CD-ROM drive.

Win98 came on 38 floppies (39 with the Boot disk)... Win98SE is super duper rare to find, but had 39(40). Not sure how they got SE to fit on just one more diskette than FE. WinME did not have a floppy version... but Win2000 Pro from the NT line did, and came on 110 floppies! I've not found Office 2000 on floppy yet, myself... but sometimes there are dark rumors of it existing.

When I was in college I did a lot of Office 95 to 97 upgrades. We had all the floppies copied to a network folder to the upgrade process was pretty simple, but one computer was having network issues so I actually had to use the set of floppies. Ugh! The good ole days eh? :)

Still the best office version. Everyone after that just added so many extra useless features and they when that was not enough changed the menu system completely in later versions. With that god damn ribbon

I bought a used copy of Office 2003 last week, it should arrive tomorrow. It is the final version before they removed the menu bar and non-ribbon toolbar and switched to the ribbon toolbar.

That brings back memories. I remember having to do this very same install once on a computer that didn't have a CD drive (not that uncommon in '97), and was very glad when I later got a hold of the Office 97 install CD.

It's the sort of thing you do while watching TV. You should partition the drive for multiple OSs. That way you can switch without having to reinstall. Although many OSs require the primary partition.

I remember trying to install Word 6.0 off about 12 floppies back in the day and it did not go well. They were so unreliable. I'm amazed you got through 46 without a single problem.

Man I miss those days... everything was so much simpler. I was around just long enough before windows was even mainstream. Most people were still only using DOS or the Apple IIe. My first PC was a green screen only msdos 1.1 with either 80186 or 286. Can’t recall. It had games like Tanglers, hangman and cryptogram. My second was a 386 windows 3.1 with ms-dos 2 or 3. Fun times man.

Either 8086/8088 or 80286 since the 80186 never existed :) But yeah. My first PC was a 486 DX-2, 4 mb of RAM and a 512 mb hard drive. And it came with DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. Month later Windows 95 was released. So spent a fortune to add 4 mb more to the PC. Hook up an external CD-ROM drive from a friend. And installed Windows 95 on it. Friend of mine had Office 95 lying around on CD-ROM. But since my PC didn't have a CD-ROM drive (or soundcard/speakers) yet (that took another half a year of saving money). He arj'd the setup files on floppies. I think there were like 30 of them or so. So I went extracting the files to the hard disk so I could install Office 95 from there.. All went well till I got to one of the last floppies.... Read error... NOOOOO.. Those were the times indeeed :)

I've had 80 gig drive in my Win98 machine back then and it was able to use all of it without any problems. I think there were problems if you wanted more than 120 gigs or so.

5:38 And you can be thankful for the data compression that made it possible to get an average 4,15 Mb of data into each 1,44 Mb disk! Otherwise those 191 Mb would fill up over 130 disks!

I dont think they used the 1.44 format. I have seen other pieces of SW going higher pushing higher to load more data plus, making piracy more coplicated since it is not a 1.44 formated disk ... it looks like a non fotmat disk.

I had to do crap like this in the 90s. Got bored with floppies so I used to transfer install files using lap link from a laptop over the parallel port. It took about the same time but you could kickoff an xcopy and go and do something else. All the fun has gone out IT now.

It's funny. Those diskette's amount to just over 66MB and contain all of Microsoft Office 97's software. Now a days, 66MB wouldn't even contain 5% of the most current version of Office.

I believe this was the first version of Word that had the squiggly lines under words for spell checking. We were in our IT course in college(in the UK) and our friend had Office 97 and showed us the new squiggly line feature. Thought it was really cool back then :)

There is the “universal” display driver, that I found that allows true color on almost any pc, though when performing os upgrades, running certain programs, can jack up the display. But I do have to say it’s better than having just 16 colors.

I... I thought 13 disks for Windows 95 RTM was bad. I thought 22 disks for 95 OSR2 was bad. 23 disks for Office 4.3 is borderline untolerable. But this takes the cake.

In 1997 we used CDs to install Office 97 this is maybe for people who don't have CD drives but who didn't have a CD drive in 97 almost everybody had one in their PC.

I remember buying Windows 3.1 on 5.25 1.2MB disks, with a coupon inside to receive 5.25 360K disks for free if you didn’t have a HD floppy drive. Of course you’d send away for these to have a spare backup copy!

Christ, I remember installing Windows 95 with floppy discs onto my 386SX with 4MB of RAM... the drive wore out and it wouldn't even boot because I think 386SX wasn't even supported. Good times as a 10 year old.

According to TechNet- Microsoft Office 97 Standard edition is provided on a total of 45 diskettes. Microsoft Office 97 Professional edition is provided on a total of 55 diskettes. (!) Do you have the wrong box perhaps?
