UPDATE: Now that it's warmer outside and the tires loosened up a bit they feel fairly unsafe on the road. The front wanders on the highway and can cause a bit of a death wobble. After increasing the pressure in both too 28 psi (bike recommends 21) they are much more well behaved but still aren't something you want to rail corners on.

Do you think it is just the front tire causing the problem or both no good?

@@agentdoubleo7636 I end up putting on about 75% road miles but 90% of my rides include an off road destination where I'm always glad to have something aggressive. These have gotten better after a put a few hundred miles on them. Last time I was on the highway I didn't notice anything at all and it never even crossed my mind. Still not something I'd recommend unless you need the off road capabilities and want something really inexpensive.

I'm 61, been changing tires since I was around 12 yrs old. Always on the ground, being up off the ground sounds wonderful. When changing the rear, if you pull the bottom shock bolt, you can then drop the swing arm enough to remove the chain without touching the adjusters.

If you ever come to a bead that doesnt want to come off on the trail use your buddies bike or at home a spare bike, lean the bike up and slide the tire under the kickstand. Use the kickstand foot right at the base of the bead, Now the handlebars act as a lever and the the weight of the bike with help push the tire down it will come right off the rim seat.

Ben, you need to buy a baja no pinch tool. I bought one for my TAT trip. Almost didn’t take it with me but changed my mind last minute. Got a flat on the way home just a few miles from the Idaho border. Pulled the wheel off got the old tube out and put the new one in. Took 5 minutes to seat the bead with the no pinch tool. Best $160!you spend. Trust me use it once and you’ll thank me.

Ben, Thank You for the video. Great tire change stand. Always love watching the Swanky videos. You explain everything well enough that even inexperienced mechanics can do simple tasks. We watch all of your videos every time you post my son and I enjoy watching together. I need this tire change stand because we do a lot of riding. I have a 22 KLR and my son has a KLX 110. Our tire change experience has not went well in the past with tire irons changing tires on the ground. Tubes always have made things harder. Having a Tusk stand like this would make the motorcycle tire changing process much easier for my son and I. Keep doing everything you do. We need more You Tubers like you.

Hey Swanky, I just changed two rears and fronts on my KTM 640 Adventures but did it on the floor with a 2x6 box I made as I wanted to simulate a trail tire change scenario. That Tusk stand looks really sweet! What I didn't have, of course, is that center bolt and wing nut to hold the wheel in place. I really like your use of baby powder in a bag to coat the inner tube to reduce friction on insertion and the undiluted soap for easing the new tire on. My soapy water spray evaporates too quickly, so straight soap it is from now on. The Motion Pro bead breakers are a great tool and glad I have them. Oh, I was spooning on Kenda Big Blocks and they have some stout sidewalls so I had to do the "tire dance" too, to get them on. I'll take your advice on the front inner tube valve stem being "loose", also. Go Badgers!

Pro Tip: If you cannot break the bead and you are throwing away the tires anyway, you can cut them with a hacksaw straight towards the center until you cut the bead wire. Then they come off the bead pretty much by hand. The last bit can require some care and a one-died hacksaw blade handle.

My experience with changing tires is that I can not do it from home. I bought a Pro Motion tire stand and all the necessary tires tools and rim protectors. I have not had a successful tire dismount yet. I have tried on various different bike/tire types. I am not will to damage the rim to install a tire. I will continue to try but the amount of force that I have used seems like it would exceed the strength of the wheel. Don't want a bent/broken rim or the hurt myself in the process.
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 2 года назад
Some tires are just tighter than others, that's for sure. Tires that are intended to be ran without a tube especially. If you've got the opposite side of the tire down in the valley of the rim like I showed and your taking as small of bites as possible you shouldn't hurt anything as long as you don't pinch a tube or your finger.
@auswebmarketing

@Swanky cat - did you sort out the feeling of unstable / speed wobble etc? It could be that the front axle was not seated properly - apparently this is a big deal with the Gen3 - you need front wheel on the ground pump the front forks 5 times or so to seat the axle and then tighten in the pinch bolts in the correct order. according to others that solves the issue.

With the increase in psi to 28 and a few more miles on them it's definitely decreased to the point I've jumped on the highway and totally forgotten about it until I got off and realized I hadn't been thinking about it lol. I'll try that though, thanks!

I recently installed a pair of DSport adventures on my 22 KLR as well. I replaced the front with a D606 after less than 100 miles because of shaking. Both tires look very similar but they are not the same. The D606 front is stable and handles well. The front DSport is scary. The rear Dsport has been great after 500ish miles and appears to wear like a cannon ball but still has good traction on and off road. Buy the rear but stick with a name brand on the front. Just my 2 cents.

Many say it rattles so bad on the highway that you'll feel it in your teeth, your whole body. Some say it's ok for kids, but not older people. And some say it cruises on the highway just fine. Would anyone recommend a KLR to their 65 year old grandfather for a tour across the USA? Or would the KLR do him in?

Everyone has been commenting on how much they want to use the Tusk Tire stand. But, I noticed that for both the front and rear tires you had the wheels on the garage floor when spooning on the new tires. In my experience, that is the hardest part. That is when you exert so much force getting the new tire onto the rim. So, my question is, was it easier to spoon on the new tires while on the ground? I just put new tires on my KLR last weekend and I did it on the garage floor with my wheels resting on 4x4's. It was hard on my 60 year old back and I kept thinking about how I need to get a tire stand. But I don't want to get the stand if I end up doing the hard part on the ground again.

My stock rear suspension might need addressing after 50k miles, but the D Sport rear rubbed the paint off my 2nd Gen exhaust. Maybe could have bent it out a bit. It was a tight fit in general. Front lasted about 1500 miles when often crossing the state to the trails. They’re ok, but I’d probably take the old MT21/D606 combo over it. About to try the Motoz Dual Venture/Adventure combo for two weeks across the Mojave/Baja while exploring all the surrounding National Forests.

what size rear tire did you go with. I don't see that one listed. klr rear is 130/80-17 and on tusk sight they have 130/90-17

130/90/17 so it's slightly taller but it's less than a half inch.

I could use a new tusk tire stand. I use a 55 gallon trash can now and seem change a lot of tires for my friends, kids and my own bikes. Sure looks nice, versus wrestling them on my trash can. 🤣

Did you know that the tire caps on the klr650 have a valves stem tool built in them ? Yup unscrew them and turn them over and unscrew your valve stems. No extra tool needed.

I'm sorry to say, but in the fast paced world of Knock-off Chinese products on Amazon I'm pretty sure the "company" that made mine was probably long forgotten within a year of me purchasing it. I think I looked for a link within just a few months and it was alright out of stock. However, I did recently talk a bit about the jack in another video and said that the following is what I would buy today if I was going to gamble on another product "made high strength with a fresh design" haha. (Note that I make a commission off of whatever you purchase after you click these links). I'd definitely go for the one with the dolly. Bout my first klr 3rd gen 2022 from the dealership last Saturday been riding it to work all week put 200 miles on it and today the front tire went flat only took it on gravel twice so yeah that tire tool would be helpful.

What does it cost to have a dealer install tires? Do I have to replace the front and rear at the same time? My stock rear tire will wear out before the rear. I have about 3000 miles on my 2022 KLR.
@SwankyCatProductions

It's not cheap, $100 or so I'd guess. Might find shops who will do it for less. No you can change them each independently, one always goes before the other.

@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 3 месяца назад
Ugh, yeah. That's one of the worst parts. Essentially you need to pull up and sort of bend the bead out of the way to get your hand in there. I do it alone, but another hand or two would be helpful!

Thanks! I eventually got it- almost had to be less aggressive and kind of float the valve over and feed it out through the hole with a sharp tool. Tricky business! Thanks for the video - really helped. Put on some sweet Michelin Anakees (80/20’s)

I just got a Honda crf300rally, I will be doing a d sport rear but a ircTr-8 battle rally front. It's been years since I changed a tire. I laughed when you ended up in the floor( dsport's are stiff as hell). 1,warm them up 2,bolt your stand to the floor or a sheet of heavy plywood. I am starting from scratch, and researching all the tools I will need. Your video covered the stand I want and the rear tire I want so thank you. Most get the sloped knobs really fast on the front, 2 fronts to 1 rear wear,I'll pass . Irc tr-8 is in the same price range and a better choice for the front ,according to my Google fu. I'm almost 50 and just getting back into the sport,feels good to be alive again.
