pretty slick. I'm planning on using these cells to bring a 2011 Zero XU back from the dead. Do you use a BMS to charge the thing, or do you just bulk charge the entire 60v pack?

Performance would mostly be based on the motor and controller, which haven't changed. As for range, to be fair, it's MORE than needed. The cell modules are marked as 500wh each, and there are 8 of them, meaning a theoretical 4kWh of storage. A typical number used for motorcycles is 100 watt-hours per mile, but for a small scooter, it could be as little as 50 watt-hours per mile. That's a possible theoretical range of up to 80 miles. However, they are used cells, and in the real work nothing ever works quite as well as you would hope. Still, it's far more than distance than whats needed to ride at 25-30 miles per hour.
I went the other extreme and used cells scrapped from Dewalt cordless power tool packs to make a 6Ah pack for my 48V street legal Chinese scooter. Its enough to get me to the store and back or just tool around the neighborhood for half an hour. I balance the cells once a year. The pack sits on the grab bars and the battery area under the seat became grocery storage.
This bike never had lead acid batteries. The original batteries were Nimh. There was just a firmware upgrade on the factory charger for appropriate charging for the Leaf cells.
You are right, definitely no room for my 8 modules in the default 4x2 layout they arrived In. I will have to make some bus bars but other than that it should be a relatively easy build. It'll be nice to finally have the Flux going soon!

Interesting info . I Like the estimated range more than ~50 miles at ~25 to ~30 mph tops ~80 miles with new battery based on ~500 watts per pack . What I would like to do is carry maybe on the cargo rack or on trailer a ~1or ~2 kilowatt ~220V generator to give extra range
Benjamin, I have a 2009 Zero X with a battery that needs some work. DrBass mentioned gettting some Nissan Leaf batteries and strap them in. Have you already used them in a 48V ZERO? Would you recommend any information that I could research it to see it they would work? Thanks! Clay A
I haven't specifically worked on Zeros. I know the early off-road dirt bike had a removable battery pack. As long as the Leaf cells can physically fit in the same space, and it's the same voltage range, you should be able to make it work. Pull out your battery, measure it, compare it to what the equivalent voltage array of Leaf cells would be, and see if it fits in the bike. Specs on the Leaf cells are listed on Hybrid Auto Center's page. You should be able to figure it out from that. To re-use the stock charger already in that cycle, you would need to look up the specs on it and see how the charging and voltage would match up to a Leaf pack. hybridautocenter.com/HAC4/
well done, chief. probably fairly pointless in absolute terms given the range needs of such vehicle, but the process is very encouraging insofar as plugg' and playing things together. first thing you need a special charger.. to ballance each cell 2nd a special controller that limist each cells output and input etc and discharge limit... you cant just dump cells into a scooter theres electrocnis involved..
I am wondering how your scooter has held up? What kind of charging setup do you have? I am also planning 8 modules to be charged with a 400 watt solar panel. Also with house current. Sort of a hybrid charging system. I am completely ignorant of what is needed.
Hi Lawrence. Charging directly from solar is a little more complicated than can be properly discussed in a brief comment. However, the basics of it is that the solar needs to provide HIGHER VOLTAGE than the battery you are trying to charge. When the one is hooked up to the other, the solar will try to raise the voltage (charge) of the battery. The bigger the difference in voltage, the more current will flow into the battery. These numbers can be figured out with a little math and a formula. Beyond that, you will need some sort of quick-disconnect, cabling, a charge-controller, and maybe a pre-charge resistor. This was a NEW scooter I got from a friend which did NOT have a battery in it. I repurposed some cell modules out of a Nissan Leaf electric car to build a pack for the scooter. This is an upgrade over what the scooter would have had in it in terms of capacity. The Leaf cells hold quite a bit more capacity (and thus range) than the stock battery would have.

Working on projects now, I've bought two different Nissan Leaf batteries from junk yards. Both times, it cost around $2700 for a battery. Each battery has 48 cell modules inside it. That's enough to build several electric motorcycles. For 8 cell modules, that's about $450

@@chrisrobinheimdal3836 Yes, each leaf module is 2 cells. The middle terminal is the -/+ of the first and second cells, which the BMS reads voltage from (lug is smaller and not intended to power anything from it). The Leaf only draws power from the outermost two terminals, of the three.

Out of the only 10 videos we have on these batteries on RU-vid none shows us a demo on how powerful they are. can't you connect a LED or some load or a spark ..!
Hi Munther. I have no idea how connecting an LED would show how powerful the batteries are. LEDs are typically known for their LOW energy draw! Please take a look through my videos on my Vectrix electric motorcycle project. I think that these batteries pushing a 200 lb guy on a full-size motorcycle at freeway speed is a much better display of the power of these batteries than connecting an LED to them! (Although the headlamp on the Vectrix IS LED!)

I haven't been using that scooter. It was a project for a friend. I've found that motorcycles usually use about 100 watt-hours per mile. A scooter should be better than that, due to lower weight and lower speeds.

This guy has created a rolling Bomb.. by ignoring the protection and security of the battery pack. There is a reason that these modules are very well protected inside a case on the Leaf. The aluminum cases of the battery modules is thin and vulnerable to puncture, to wear through ( vibration and rubbing). A bit of thought put into the amount of energy stored in these big lithium batteries is not wasted. If you have seen what a little battery in a cell phone can do when it goes berserk.. you can scale that up by a factor of 1000... and see that protecting these cells from crashes and wear is of paramount importance.

If these batteries were their full rated capacity, it would be a 4kWh battery pack. I typically use 100 watt-hours-per-mile as a rule of thumb for electric motorcycle efficiency. This little scooter would be even better than that. So, we are talking about 40 miles or more. Keep in mind that this is a 25 mph vehicle designed for city streets.
