www.homebuildi... Click on this link for more plumbing, repair and remodeling videos. Here's another plumbing trick you might not be aware of and after the video, will understand why some plumbers install clean-outs in certain areas instead of in others. I've been trying to point this out to other professionals who really don't care, because they usually won't be doing the repair work, but you might, if it's your house.

When I do drain cleaning i like when clean outs are above the San tee so I can run water and snake at the same time. Sometime the clean out is on the trap arm but you can't always tell if the snake is going up or down the vent.

Good point.

Which is exactly what I want to do. Easily running water at the same time, helps flush the line while dislodging debris. Dislike having to take apart any drain pipes to snake or jet.

I always drill a hole in the side of the pipe, cover it with duck tape, then spray paint it for the inspector. Lol, just kidding! OK, just a little bit 😁

Our upstairs (two floors in my house) bathroom sink has sewer smells emitting from the drain when you run the water. I’ve taken the trap off and it’s clean with no clogs at all. I also checked the overfill drain hole on the inside top edge of the sink and no smell emoting from there. What’s weird about this to me is that it only happens when we run the sink water as if to just wash our hands. Could you please tell me what the problem might be? If it might be a squirrel or something that got in one of the roof vents, how to I check that? If I have to cut the wall, disconnect the vent pipe, pull it out from the roof and replace it I will but want to be sure first. That’s the only thing I can think of causing the smell but I’m definitely not a plumber and am only guessing! Thank you for any expert suggestions you might have!!!!

Just came across this video a year after your question, but I wondered if you have a different water heater upstairs, and if you have city water or a well. If you have sulfur in your water, it can react with magnesium anode rods in water heaters and produce a strong sulfur smell. In that case, the foul smell is not sewer gas. Replacing the rod with an aluminum anode will significantly reduce or eliminate the smell. Otherwise, checking for a blocked vent would depend on your vent line routing. If you can run a snake down from the roof without obstruction, that would be easy. If multiple vents connect and the one of interest doesn't go straight through the roof, you might consider going into the attic, cutting out a small section from the vent of interest, and snaking that one. This might be an easier first step, since the repair would be cheap and quick. And if you did figure it out already, please share. These types of problems are fascinating (particularly when they're happening to someone else - sorry). I hope you solved it by now.
