For these lifts, if you lean over and manage fall out the basket somehow, it's going to be a lot easier to grab onto the basket and pull yourself back in, you can't go very far if the length of the lanyard is correct. If you have a shock absorbing that'll drop a few feet and you'll be stuck hanging out of reach of anything. The fall won't kill you, but suspension trauma can cost limbs or life.

I am sure when you have both sides of the business covered you can do a better job than the bigger boys. the reason for the rope deal is in the event something unintended happens, say your working on a roadway in the bucket and somebody bumps into your van. its a just in case deal. i think personally the stretchy kind would still save your life, but you may end up hanging by your harness on the outside of the bucket.

Tom, the lanyards you’re using are work restraint, your camera guy has a fall arrest. Different uses. You should both have a work restraint type in any MEWP. Fall arrest should only be used when preventing a fall isn’t possible, thus you minimise the risk of injury by absorbing the energy during the fall.

In a MEWP you should wear a fall restraint lanyard (fixed rope) the idea is to try to reduce your chances of falling out. If you use a stretchy fall arrest you will either hit the ground before it stops you or the shock loading of it arresting your fall will topple the MEWP. Also, with a fall restraint lanyard you don’t need a rescue plan (I.e you shouldn’t be able to fall out) which is better for lone working (I would never let someone use a MEWP alone if possible)

I used to work as a steel climber erecting stages before I became a spark, so I used to climb with those scaff hooks all day. The things we used to be told were that if you had a ripper, long tails or stretchy tails were that you werent protected at lower heights as your protection would stretch further before it caught you, so you'd 'deck out' or in our case, if you are higher up, hit a part of the structure beneath you before the catch was finished. That being said, the stretchy ones would smooth out the catch so the forces your body were exerted to as your tails went tight was lower as it decelerates you more gently, whereas a rope can shock you with a greater peak force, which is entirely capable of exceeding a safe level in a short fall if you stop rapidly. So I guess it's horses for courses. I always climbed with 2 hooks on a ripper and made sure I was using hooks that were rated for crossloading and stuff as those hooks, the cheap ones anyway, are really not rated for small eyelets or cross loading, so it's always worth digging in to your pocket for the stronger ones that are ANSI rated, you can feel it in the hook when you have one of each in your hand. They're heavier but if theyre on the structure, you don't really notice. I should note that this is just info I've been given or learned from being a climber. I've never actually experienced a fall in industry on this specific kit, nor have I witnessed one, thank fuck.

The stretchy ones are designed for fall arrest, not fall prevention. They are better suited to scaffold.

On my MEWP course we were told to use harness lanyards that where adjustable that you shortened to their shortest length while carrying out work. Not to use fall arrest lanyards as they normally deploy after you’ve hit the deck if working at a low height. Sensibly told not to clip on if bucket was over a body of water and wear a life jacket instead. Also to get a anemometer to make sure MEWP wasn’t working outside it’s limits for wind.

I did my harness inspection course last year and the IPAF rule is that you should only use shock absorbing lanyards where they are adjusted to such a way that they will still act as a restraint without deploying shock absorption. The reason from what i remember (may be wrong) is because of the balance of the extending boom, you are more likely to offset balance if shock absorbers deploy and let you out of the basket. In a scissor lift there is no need for fall arrest at all, only in booms

Well you have been a busy boy Tom. Giving birth to all that and keeping us all in the dark. Looking good though I would even attempt to work out the cost of that lot. As for the 30watt led lights we all know they will last until winter and on the coldest wettest snowiest day they will give up the ghost causing a short circuit and will have to be repaired straight away obviously not by you. But saying that it's great to see you back on the tube and really pleased that thing are working out for you.

always a worry when you commit to something big like this but you'll wonder how you managed before, as the saying goes you have to speculate to accumulate, which you will do, good luck to you, i have run my electrical business for over 30 years and watching your videos always teaches me something, you never stop learning !

Very nice set up Tom and best of luck. As for the dodgy photocell, I've seen that before. My first job as an apprentice sparks was on the Living Bridge here in Ireland a long time ago. One cheap photocell doing hundreds of lights for a massively expensive art piece! Was a disaster at the start!
