This week we install the last two windows, start plowing the driveway, put the ShelterLogic back together and clear the real path to the outhouse. Thank goodness we made a gravel path last year because break-up is in full swing and boy is it muddy!
Don’t forget to check out Alaskan Freedom.

In the room where you cut a makeshift door, I would make a door instead of a window, make a second room as a workshop with a backdoor. All houses should have two doors, in case of fire or other emergency.

We do have egress windows but Craig has been thinking of putting French doors on the back opening onto a large porch.

It needs to sit on a quarter inch rims on the bottom 1/8 inch rims on the outside of the flange to let the water out

If you don't anchor that shelter logic 2 feet into the ground, a 60+ mph wind will be able to lift the whole shelter AND the cement blocks up and 20 feet away or more...don't ask me how I know!! lol
@ouralaskahomestead
@ouralaskahomestead 3 месяца назад
We also unfortunately learned the hard way. Had one thrown on top of a car and scratched the hood all up. We run corkscrew stakes on the corners and use high tension cable to attach to the supports now. The cement blocks are just extra.

First off, WOW....Thank you. We feel like superstars with that shout-out. So glad to see a window go in the bedroom. A wood stove + no bedroom window is scary. And last, the gutter. I grew up in cold N Iowa and S Minnesota winters. Gutters never came off for winter but were attached with a lot more than in a warmer climate, including wood blocking and additional bracing. Make sure to Google the term "Ice Dam Roof" and be aware of what it is and what causes it (gutters mostly). Then you'll be prepared to avoid it.
@ouralaskahomestead

I know WE are looking forward to seeing your progress and no doubt our viewers will enjoy keeping up with it as well. Thank you for the gutter tips, we will do some upgrades this summer to be better prepared for winter.

Most window manufactures allow 1/2" on each side and 3/4" top and bottom from the stated opening size it's designed for. This is to leave room for your shims on all 4 sides so the window can be set perfectly level and plumb, and to allow a small gap on the bottom for water egress. Speaking of which, you don't want to seal over the bottom of the window frame, this is where moisture that gets under the window frame can get out, and drip down the exterior. Hope that helps.

Yes, I was hoping someone would tell them they need to remove the tape from under the window, and apply tape at the top.

With that style of building it would be easy to build another on the side

It's nice to have windows. You said they were 34"x36", if you had gone to 36"x36" you could have bought them at Lowes on the shelf for $188 ea. Not sure if you know this but, the two little holes at the bottom of your window is to control moisture. When putting a window in, put a 1/2" shim on all 4 sides inside. Just trying to help, not tell you what to do, lol. I'm putting siding on my cabin at the moment. Thanks for sharing

Dang it! I musta watched the one and only DIY video on RU-vid that the person did it wrong. After you posted this I went back looking and sure enough, none of the other videos have it going on the bottom. Sure glad you pointed it out. Craig went out the next day and took the bottoms off, no easy task. Thanks again, it’s all new for us, learning as we go.

Hi, with all the snow you know you'll contend with, I'd suggest making sure you have a bigger plow than the red jeep-truck small plow. Here in Northern Minnesota at least one member of the family has a big truck and a big plow. Let's you be more independent. Also maybe when you get time widen your driveway so you don't have to worry about slipping off the edge. Just will make your life easier. :)

That was the plan. We’ll reattach it and switch some stuff up. If it comes off again next winter we’ll probably just scrap it.
@melaniedriscoll2286
@melaniedriscoll2286 2 месяца назад
Gutters can be a pain in the butt, but diverting that water especially away from the entryway I think is essential. So at least gutter the entry and exits. Catching the water in a barrel ( weighted down with a rock) is great for watering outside or putting out a fire in the pit or just whatever.... Without gutters my front entry and front stairs would be very icy spring and fall as the snow melts and also as it rains, drips and freezes. Or if not gutters some type of porch over hang that is an area where messy boots can maybe come off. The overhangs are not so vulnerable in snow storms and crazy wind too.

Good to see your back ! Yes a lot of fire in Canada & the USA last summer hopefully not a repeat this year, Spring is trying to come just a little slow, Installing your windows you need to shim the bottom to split the difference then you have room for insulation all around, I am 100% off grid last 11 years & love it , You Tube is my TV so a couple years ago i did you & started my own channel , Another year or two maybe I'll have the homestead the way i want it :)
