Installing the Lodging Knees - Episode 144 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

We are nearing the end of the knees! It's amazing the difference that can be seen as these all start to go in. Not only to the rigidity of the structure but also at how the space seems so much different inside.
Knees keep the hull from wracking while sailing. They tie many parts of the structure together so that they work together. This can mean they can sometimes be a bit challenging to fit and secure in place. After Steve finishes the knees, he gets a very well deserved holiday break with Robin while Alix fits them in Arabella.
As we said in the video we'd love your help growing the channel this year. If you are not yet subscribed please click the subscribe button and if you would like to be notified when new videos come out, make sure you click the notification bell next to the subscribe button as well.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Man, Steve and Robin sure do go through a lot of trouble, just for a little privacy. 😂💓👏 You folks brighten my world, through some dark days. Your character and determination inspire and encourage. The world is a better place with y'all in it: bonus for letting us share a snippet portion of your lives. Alex, those are some great joins. Woodworking is as much perseverance as it is talent. Kudos. When y'all are old and gray you will be able to look back on this project and perhaps realize the contribution that you have made to the world through your sweat and headaches And backaches

I've not canoed in ice, but have canoed in Minnesota's Boundary Waters when the air temp was in the 40's. After a portage, my bud in a 2nd canoe (3 guys in 2 canoes) went over up to his chest. He said it was cold but he didn't want to change into his one set of dry clothes as who knows if it would happen again and we had to go through another portage and some minimal rapids further on. Miles further, we finally got to our camping site and put up our tents in the rain to then discover that one of the dry bags containing sleeping bags had a hole in it. It was not a comfortable night. But sitting on the ground the next morning, my back to a tree, with clouds racing above the whipping branches of white pine and birch was also an experience I'll not forget.

I've never questioned the how or why Steve and Alex build their boat. But for too long I've held my tongue about their lack of shop tidiness and the fire hazard it represents. I was always taught from an early age to clean the shop at the end of the day's work. Wood shavings and especially sawdust are extremely flammable, not to mention the danger from slipping and tripping over debris left on the floor. Sweep up those shavings and sawdust and spread them out in the wood lot! Your mothers don't work there so clean up after yourselves! Keep your work tables neat as you work, less then an hour a day to clean up and put your tools away will go a long way to making your work area safer plus set a good example for your viewers. Thank You, (rants over).

If that old tree root could talk. Like how the heck did it get so full of steel. I can see an old homestead on the banks of the river, the trash pile with a discarded mattress and some other odds and ends. A sprout pops up in the middle of it and grows for years and years. The river eventually erodes close enough to topple the tree into the water and it floats down to a final resting place on that gravel bar with its metallic treasures exposed for some personal such as you to see visions of Arabella upon seeing it. Amazing.

26:03 lean DOWNstream. You want to expose the hull to the water so the water will go UNDER and lift the boat. Leaning upstream risks the water grabbing the gunwale and wrapping the canoe. Although you got out of it this time, next time with more current or a bigger obstacle, you might not be so fortunate. Happy New Year to all of the Arabella crew! Watching the lengthy procedure for getting a superbolt through the lodging knees and other components to tie the whole assembly together I had a light bulb moment! Instead of dismantling everything why not: Join two shorter bolts together with a threaded sleeve? You would need to decide the optimal location of the joining sleeve by expirementation but it looked like there should be enough wriggle room to make small adjustments to the length of each bolt and so saving you the time and effort that you needed to do it the other way. Of course I appreciate that we must be certain to avoid positioning the joining sleeve inside any wooden parts but in the given example that should be easily avoidable with careful pre-testing and observation of all steps. I hope this may be of some small assistance to the work. Good luck and may God 's blessing be yours!
