Installing the Traxxas Bluetooth adapter - How to use the Traxxas Link app with a TRX4

On TJsRC today, Installing the Traxxas Bluetooth adapter and how to use the Traxxas Link app with a Trx4. I'll cover installing the Bluetooth adapter then briefly go over the app functions that I will be using with my Trx4. Since I don't have any of the telemetry options right now I will not be discussing those features.

How do u like the traxxas link now that u've had it for a while?

@@hotrodavery I like it, it is helpful for somethings like setting endpoints for new servos, checking battery life and temps. Doing things like a factory reset or changing breaking rate would have been a pain without it. My only real complaint is the slow update process with new firmware.

Appreciate your video, I only have a 8S Xmaxx but this video is still useful. Regarding my experience of it, it is not bad BUT I had a major issue where the top speed was not working correctly and when I did a short run it would show my speed at say 60 kph (yes kilometres per hour) as I am in Spain but then if I stopped and started again it could read up to and over 340 kmh which we all know that no Xmaxx can do over 211 MPH (miles per hour) - so today I thought I would change it to MPH on the app instead of the KPH and low and behold it is working correctly. I have contacted Traxxas (NO HELP) and seen on many websites and forums and even Traxxas admit it is an issue but have done nothing about it. So if other users are having this issue then putting it to MPH sorts the problem out - putting it back to KPH still shows ridiculous speeds.

That's an interesting problem. I have not heard about that one but I'm glad you kind of have it working for you. My TRX4 doesn't have the right sensors for that part of the app to be useful so I have not had any personal experience with it. I hope Traxxas looks into further.

Ya the light kit is pricey for sure. I didn’t think the Bluetooth module was to bad though. It’s currently 35bucks on Amazon.

When you get your truck you'll need to make sure the controller has the Bluetooth adapter installed or you will need to get one and install it yourself. Most of Traxxas models do not have the Bluetooth preinstalled. This is needed to be able to use the Traxxas app. Good luck with your adventure into RC Crawling I hope you have a blast.

I love how they advertise that the remote can do some thing but they never seem to let ya know that it takes paying for like 3 other products to make the feature actually work

Yeah I hear you. I was disappointed myself the first time I discovered you can’t actually use all the fancy features unless you add all the extra, sold separately sensors. It’s cool that the functionality is there. It’s just not attainable for the average RC user.

Great video. Very informative. I don't own any Traxxas cars but this app is super cool. I curious what other components are required to make use of this app. ESC, Motor, Receiver, Battery ect ? I would love to setup an Arrma RC with this system. Traxxas vehicles are great but I really don't have extra cash to get into a different line of RC's. I'm sticking with Arrma because I have tons of spare parts for them. 🤷‍♂️

The App only works with the Traxxas eco system of components. The first thing you would need is a Traxxas TQI controller with the Bluetooth adapter installed in it. The next piece is a Traxxas TQI receiver on the RC. This is the minimum needed and in fact all I have on my TRX4 that is still Traxxas. There is much more it can do if you buy the added sensors ( rpm, temperature and voltage) and gps module. buying all that separately to try and make it work on your non Traxxas RC could be made to work in theory. You’d probably be part way to the cost of another whole rc though and not much is better than another new RC, right. I’m not trying to talk you out of it because it could be done. If it was me I don’t think the benefits would be worth the time and cost especially if the parts you’d be replacing work just fine right now IMHO

Hi, I can't understand! on my mobile phone I succeded to connect but on my tablet traxxas link bluetooth is detected but it ask a password to connect!!!

I can’t find my paper copy of the installation instructions but I do not remember having to enter a password anywhere. If you have the instructions double check for a mention of that. Otherwise I would just recommend messaging Traxxas directly either through their customer service support link on their website or maybe one of their social media accounts. Not sure what else to recommend for you.

First be sure the controller has the Bluetooth adapter installed already. Traxxas sold many tQi controllers that are "Bluetooth compatible" meaning they are able to have the adapter added but didn't come with it. Second, if you previously has a controller connected you will need to go into your phone Bluetooth settings and tell it to forget the former device. Then start from the beginning. If you've done all that try connecting it to a different phone or tablet if you can to verify it's working.

I'm not sure what you mean by no high voltage detected. If you are referring to the instrument panel screen in the app, those functions require additional sensors that Traxxas sells separately. Sensors like battery voltage, motor rpm, motor temperature and speed all require separate sensors. I think I briefly mentioned this in the video because I don't use any of those functions for what I do.

Do you need to connect RC to remote inorder to work this, or remote and app is good enough to do changes?

You can just connect to the transmitter but then you will only be able to make changes that are connected directly to that. The benefit to connecting to the Reciever also is that if there are any firmware updates for it you can then get those done as well. You may also need it connected to verify what you're changing is actually doing to the RC. Things like steering end point adjustment can only be made while the RC is powered up and connected so you can tell where to set those. However it's not strictly necessary to have the RC powered up. 👍

I have my tex4 bronco and the sport and I have a question about it bro,, do I need to buy some other parts for my trx4 bronco and sport or just the bluetooth and I’m all set sr,, sorry I’m not to familiar or experienced whit this items sr, so a little help will be appreciated thanks

Your Traxxas controller needs to have the spot on the back to put the Bluetooth module. Then That's all you need to do the things I demonstrated in the video. To be able to use the other added features of the app like the speed dashboard you need additional sensors that go in the RC truck. But you don't need them just to make channel adjustments and firmware updates.

on iPhone you either swipe up or hit the home button. On Android the back or home button should work.

Do you know if the app will allow you to change driving profiles (Crawl to Trail)? I can't seem to figure it out if it does.

I do not believe those can be changed from the app. The app is controlling settings in the receiver. The crawl and trail settings, are changed on the ESC itself. This is why I am able to use this with my TRX4 and it has a Castle ESC which has to be programmed separately but all the settings in the app still work.

No I don't have a video on that. That is simply a self centering momentary two way switch. The original switch didn't have a center position so it was always telling channel 3 to either be in or out. I replaced it with the momentary switch so I could use channel 3 to control a winch instead of the two speed transmission. And obviously the winch needs to not always be running in or out. If you have any soldering ability it is a very straight forward swap. First you remove the screws to split the controller in half. Then un-solder the existing switch leads and remove the stock switch. Next you will need to cut/Dremel out the notch to fit the new switch and glue it in place. finish by soldering the leads to the new switch then reassemble the Controller halves and you're done. for the gauges to work you need the additional sensors from Traxxas. There's an RPM, voltage and GPS sensors that can be added to enable the extra functionality of the app such as the gauges. There's much it can do without them though.

Most of those functions will only work if your truck has the added sensors. I don’t believe they come stock on any of the Traxxas vehicles. You have to buy them separately and add them.

If you are talking about the Bluetooth module that goes in the back of the Traxxas TQI controller. Just do a Google search for Traxxas 6511 or search that term on your favorite RC parts website. I find it quite useful even though I do not have any of the extra sensors. Since I have this in a crawler those add on features would barely be useable anyway so I don’t mind.

With this module and App, is the Hobbywing program box and OTA programmer still necessary? And after installing a new servo box, can it be configured thru this module? When turned on my steering jerks to the right.

This is only for Traxxas brand electronics, specifically a Traxxas transmitter and a Traxxas Receiver. After that you could have any brand of motor or servos. However the Brand of Programmer must match the ESC or it will not work. Example, If you are running Hobbywing ESC you have to use the Hobbywing Programmers. What electronics do you have in your RC? And if your servo is doing that start by making sure it's plugged in to the correct channel on the receiver.

@@TJsRC gotcha. The servo box is the only electronics that I’ve replaced so far. Its a BETU 45kg brushless servo. Its plugged into the second of my two channel 1 which I’m pretty sure the original was plugged into.

@@OshKoshWorldwide You can easily verify that by switching them around then powering up. CAUTION, do this with the wheels off the ground in case it were to jump straight to full speed. Normally channel 1 is steering and channel 2 is throttle. So carefully double check that it’s all connected correctly before trying anything else.

Yes you can. The transmitter and receiver are the bare minimum needed for the app to function. I am doing this very thing in my TRX4, running a Castle ESC with a Holmes Hobbies motor. You will still need the specific ESC programmer that matches what ever ESC you are using.

The app will let you know if you are connected to the rc by the green icons in the top corners. As long as they’re both green when you make the changes the settings will be saved and then you can close the app.

Don't start trying to connect in your phone settings app. First make sure your phones BT on and the Transmitter is powered on. Now go into the app and use the "Traxxas Link Wireless Module" button to start the connection. Follow the directions in the prompts. If this still doesn't work message Traxxas customer service because there was a known issue with some of the modules not working with newer versions of Android. This was a couple years ago and I assume they would have addressed it but if the module you have is somehow an older manufactured one maybe it still has the issues. In that case they should be able to either fix it for you or replace it.

We tried to connect it to the iPhone (I didn't check what model, but I think it's fairly new) - unfortunately, the result was negative. The last option remains - I'll try it on the iPad - it's old enough for me, but... hope dies last. @@TJsRC

@@janisteteris6847 So the phones are seeing it as an BT device available but just won't complete the connection? I would still message Traxxas customer service then and see what they will do to help you out. You spent good money on this product, it shouldn't be this much headache to make it work.

@@TJsRC A negative result is also a result. The connection with the IPod tablet failed - unfortunately, the software is too old (version 10) and you can't install a newer one (you need to start from 11). However, there is also positive news - I managed to connect via iPhone (if I didn't confuse anything, then version 16.7) (Tomorrow I will try to find out what system version the phone we tried first had)

Great video, i have a question i did all the steps and my car is connected properly but when i go to the dashboard it shows me nothing no speed nothing when my rc is moving … what the mean ?

You need the added sensors for the dashboard functions, there's a separate speed GPS, rpm, voltage and temperature sensor for those. Traxxas makes you buy those separately for the dash board functions. I don't have those installed so I simply use the app for channel settings and keeping the TX and RX up to date with firmware updates. I didn't cover the Dashboard features in the video because I didn't have any of the telemetry sensors installed. I should have included a reference in the video though to the fact that you need the extra sensors for it.

You don't need the Traxxas ESC just the Controller and the Receiver. I have a Castle SW4 and a Holmes Hobbies Trail master pro brushless in my TRX4 right now and the Traxxas App works great.

@@TJsRCyou do need the traxxas esc for certain features, like speed rpm and voltage, you can run a wire for voltage tho but I found I didn’t need it for og esc, also your bronco doesn’t have TSM unless you’ve changed the Rx, speed isn’t that accurate anyway, rpm sensor or even better gps module is the only way to improve accuracy, there are other things you lose going for a different esc too like losing the ability to control light kits remotely, I just removed a Hobbywing esc from a second hand Xmaxx and installed the traxxas esc, got a lot more functionality back, upgrades are not always upgrades

@@BigWillieFPV Speed, rpm, voltage and GPS were all additional sensors that you could get that plugged in to the Traxxas RX so were independent of ESC at the time I made the video. I still have the Traxxas RX because of the ability to connect with the App for the settings I do play around with. I have not kept up with what Traxxas is doing now for those sensor inputs. It also was not the goal and still isn't needed to have those extra features in a crawler TRX4, I may have brought that up in the video but I don't remember. One of The great parts of this hobby is the myriad of ways you can combine parts and be happy with your RC. IMO moving up from the stock Traxxas ESC to one with more features that I will use is a definite upgrade.

@@BigWillieFPV unless Traxxas has changed what RX they're putting in the TRX4 it does indeed have the TSM version of the RX it's printed right on the receiver label. I have played around with it on occasion but you definitely can't have it on when slow crawling. A few times I've rigged the truck up for speed runs (because why not see how fast a slow rc can be made to go) and that's where it helps but 99% of the time I never use it because it's mostly only ever run on the rocks or slow walking trails.

@@TJsRC Oh yes the Rx does have tsm I wasn’t aware of that nice, what features do you gain from the aftermarket esc? Do you retain the ability to change the lighting in the dashboard remotely low/high beam switch the rock and rollbar lights on/off high low etc, change the braking on the fly, throttle sensitivity, does cruise control still work, does in you vid you mentioned training mode does that still work? I’m definitely going to get the motor temp sensor that’s something the stock esc doesn’t do, I’ve had a quick play around the xmaxx/trx4 and Xmaxx esc seems to do a bit more than the trx4 one, lots to learn, also it says you can have esc temp and current draw on the trx4 esc but I can’t seem to get that working

I don't know, doesn't really seem worth it for crawlers, although setting the tx up the normal way is a right pain in the arse, wondering whether to get another fs-gt5 recevier and use the gen 8 axe tx in the bronco...another good vid though :)

Excellent idea there to use the controller from the Gen 8 Axe, it's an awesome one and very easy to use. If/when my Traxxas Tqi controller dies that will likely be the one I get as it seems to be a great bang for the buck option. 👍

So any change I make in the garage, will change the car settings? For instance, if I change the battery type in the garage then the car would know what type of battery is in it, correct?

For Most of the settings yes. However the battery type change I believe has to be done manually on the ESC. There should be instructions in the Traxxas user manual for that. The only spot in the app where you can do anything related to battery is in the "Model Setup" these are simply the stats you input for the current RC so that the correct information will display on the "Dashboard". Changing things in the Model Setup area doesn't effect the RC at all. Most of the Dashboard functions only work though if you have the added Telemetry kit installed.

Got this on my new nitro revo. Pretty cool, but I cant figure out how to keep my phone screen from going to sleep while I'm using it. I have my max temp set at 280, but the warning doesnt go off if my temp goes higher than that because my phone screen goes to sleep. Would be awesome app if it didnt do that.

Great video 👍.. I've just installed my link module, updated the firmware after the updates it told me to power off which I did. Now I'm getting a green flashing led on the tsm. The esc is red. Any ideas. Thanks

Try going through the manual throttle calibration procedure. It should be in either the TQi controller manual or the RC manual.

Hi. Thanks for the info. Does the Bluetooth adapter have to be attached to the remote all the time for the changes made in settings to apply. I have 3 Traxxas rigs and If I were to use them with their respective remotes, would I need a Blue tooth adapter for each of them or can I use one Bluetooth adapter across all three for setting them up and then detach the adapter. I will not be needing real time control, only one time setup.

Technically each controller needs it's own adapter. I believe you can get around that two different ways. First it's possible to use just one of the controllers and have it connected to all three rigs. There are setting in the Traxxas app for setting it up to be used with multiple rigs. I have not personally done this as I only have one Traxxas so you would have to search either RU-vid or Traxxas website for instructions. Obviously this method means you could only have one rig running at a time. A second method would be to physically install the Bluetooth adapter into a controller make your changed the remove it and reinstall it in the next controller. I don't know if this would be a problem free way though. I have no idea if you would have to re-pair it to your phone each time and would it recognize that it's in a different controller and adjust on its own? I have never tried either of these options but if you do and run into any problems I will gladly help you search for the solution because I don't you should have to buy one for each if it's not a necessity for you. I don't fiddle with the settings in mine very often either so I understand but I love how convenient it is to use the app to make adjustments when I need to.

This doesn't care what motor is in the truck. Keep in mind that you will need the added sensors if you want the dashboard functions to work. All the settings capabilities will work just fine without them though.

@@EricsRC open the app and make sure cruise control is the highlited function that you want the multi function knob to be for. If a different function was tapped on that list before you closed the app then the knob will be set for that instead of cruise.

The Dashboard speed, voltage, rpm etc only work if you have the extra Traxxas sensors installed in your RC. Most of us don’t have those and just use the app for adjusting settings in the “channels” and “Garage” sections of the app. As for the beeping I’m not sure what that is without more information or seeing it in a video clip. You could email Traxxas customer support or join a Traxxas Facebook group for the RC that you have and ask there. What Rc are you trying to connect this to?

After giving the traxxas link 3 tries, I have to go back to other radios like flysky, the app is bugged or something and it never loads the Drive effects (expo, and dual rates) So it only saves and loads end-points automatically but the same expos and dual rates and the entire drive effects page are applied to all vehicles…

You can adjust trim and sensitivity of the throttle channel. The Sensitivity setting acts similar to throttle ramping but to adjust true throttle ramp curves the ESC needs to be adjustable. This is not usually possible with the stock ESC. However if you have an after market one you would use that manufacturers software or programming tool to change the throttle ramp curves. I have Castle Creations ESC's in most of my rigs so I use Castle's smartphone app for those kinds of setting changes.

I have never used an X-maxx but it is supported by the Traxxas app. The only thing the app needs is the Bluetooth adapter in your Traxxas controller then as long as your X-maxx still has the Traxxas electronics in it you should be able to use either "Training mode", which limits throttle to 50% I believe, or simply adjust the maximum throttle to be whatever percentage you want. I know that's probably obvious but I feel obligated to say it anyway, the X-maxx is huge please verify the throttle settings took effect before handing it over to an inexperienced driver. First check the settings in the app if it's connecting properly. See if it looks like reverse is turned off or down to zero. There is a setting, I think it's called "race mode" that locks out the reverse. Make sure that isn't the issue. If everything looks the way it's supposed but it still doesn't work, the next step is to find and follow the instructions in the manual for resetting all the transmitter settings back to their factory settings. Do this on the controller first. Once done check to see if you have forwards and reverse without reconnecting the app. Lastly reconnect the app and check again.

One other thing I thought of to check would be to look in the app under "drive effects" and see what percentage the "braking" in set to. This setting controls how much reverse throttle is applied. If this is set to low it will act like in has no reverse.

I made that myself out of a broken plastic knob that I glued to the wheel on the transmitter. If you're looking for something like that just Google "thumb steer for RC transmitter" and you should find quite a few different options to choose from. 👍

The app is really for adjusting settings. You can reverse the channels that control the hi/low and the lockers but it would be a very inconvenient way to engage them while driving.

It doesn't matter which Traxxas model RC you have. This only works with a Traxxas TQI transmitter and it needs the Bluetooth adapter slot on the back of it.

it's a GoPro clip mount. I thought it would be a good place to mount the camera but then I never actually use it. It doesn't provide very good camera angles for the type of filming I like to do so mostly I just use a selfie stick with the GoPro on it. 👍

You should be able to connect to more than one transmitter. However you can only connect the App to one BT module at a time. As far as I know the app never allowed you to have multiple BT modules connected at the same time.

@@eduardolopez4185 The app connects to the BT in the Transmitter so if that is connected it shouldn't care what RC car is paired with the transmitter. My app still has a "select model" button/icon. It's in the middle of the top row when the app opens. This just changes preset profiles in the app. It doesn't have any control whether the app connects to a particular RC or not. At the very top edge of the app in each corner there is an indicator light that let's you know if it is talking with the transmitter and receiver/vehicle. If the one I the top right is red and not green make sure the RC is powered on and connected to the Transmitter before opening the app and connecting it. If both those indicator lights are green then it's connected to both the tx and the Rx and you can make any adjustments you need. Ok after typing all that I went back and looked around in the app. There is a button labeled "connect" with a picture of a receiver for the icon. It's in the "Garage" tab but I don't know what it is for as I've never used it. If I had to guess I would suspect it might be for helping to pair a transmitter with a new reciever but again I'm not sure. Sorry for the long wordy reply.

Nathan Kramer The app will only work with Traxxas radio and receiver. And what you can do with the auxiliary channels is limited. For example the TRX4 I have has 5 channels but the only thing you can do with ch4 and ch5 is reverse them. I think you would need more options for setting up a plow. I don't have any experience with putting one on an RC though so I'd recommend looking up some videos of guys that did put them on their RC and then ask how they made it work. The only thought I have is setting up a winch to do the up and down lifting. For the side to side I'm not sure what I would do. The speedometer requires extra sensor module installed in the car. It’s called the “TQi Telemetry Expander” it allows the use of additional sensors for tracking various data from the car’s electronics and has a built in GPS for the speedometer functions of the app. As far as I know this is the only way for the speedometer in the app to work. If you simply want to know how fast your RC can go there are cheaper GPS speed meters for RC speed testing. I don’t have the telemetry expander myself because most all my RC activities are pretty slow. I still enjoy the ease of tuning functionality that the app provides though.

you can change quite a lot actually. Throttle and steering can have end points adjusted, max forward or reverse set. Brake percentage adjusted. The rate that the throttle or steering is applied based on user input from the transmitter. Each channel can also be reversed if needed. The app can also update the firmware on the transmitter, receiver and ESC if it's all Traxxas brand. The app does a number of other things as well. You can download the app free and check it out with out needing to connect it to an RC.

@@let-finn6205 Under the "Garage" section there's -Stability control management -Light control if you have the Traxxas light kit installed -Model setup is necessary for the "Dashboard" to display the correct information. You may need the extra Telemetry kit for the Dashboard to show everything. -Telemetry setup if you have the added Telemetry kit. -Model memory, this is for when you use one transmitter with more than one RC. You can have different settings for each one. -Channel Setup, here you can fine tune each available channel. What you can do with the Channel depends on what it is for. Steering and Throttle have more options than Channel 4 for example which can only be reversed since it's an on/off style channel. From the main App screen there's the "Drive Effects" section, this is for controlling what the "Multi-function" knob on the transmitter is set to. There's a Training mode you can setup when letting inexperienced users drive the RC. Most of the App features are more for the user than changing settings on the RC but even if you only use it to fine tune the Steering, Throttle and Reverse/Brakes it is a heck of a lot easier than fumbling through Traxxas's push button menu to manually set them up. I don't have any of the Telemetry options setup so I've never used the Dashboard part. If I was speed running or racing I think it would be very useful to have setup so I could easily monitor all the rigs internal stats. Being able to see at a glance RC Speed, motor RPM, motor temps and voltage would probably be useful in that situation.

For the time being while you get it figured out you should be able to simply unplug the Battery to turn it off. Try powering everything thing up, the transmitter, the ESC and the phone app and once the app see's that it's connected go into the "support" area and find "updates" to check and make sure that there aren't any important firmware updates needed. Other than that I would suggest calling Traxxas support line if the problem continues. I have an e maxx brushless from around 2010 production . It was apparently discontinued by traxxas. I know why after the trouble we had working on it compared to it s rival erevo . Clutch setup was hard to change over on emaxx . Towers break real easy. Not a sturdy design at all. All that aside , I want to connect this rc to smartphone . Hope your vid helps . Emaxx doesn’t have blue tooth built in

The bare minimum you will need is a Traxxas TQI controller with the Bluetooth adapter and a matching Traxxas TQI receiver. For the advanced features you’ll need the GPS module and the extra sensors, voltage, rpm and temperature.

Of course I’m going for wheelies etc mad speed. I’m not gettin many wheelies like I used to. Is there some adjustments in drive effects like throttle , sub trim ?Which percentage gets me nail biting punch wheelies and flat lipo in one hit ?cheers Mister

@@Garrysullivanjones Try going to a smaller tooth pinion. Smaller pinion means more torque so that may help and pinion gears are typically not that expensive so grab a few different ones and play around with it. I’d go to 17t as a start to see if that makes enough of a difference. If it doesn’t drop another and go to 16t. If you can only afford one I’d go with the 16t. You will loose a little top end speed as you go lower in pinion but low end power will go up so it should feel stronger off the line and pop those wheelies easier.
