SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #124 : Seacocks o' Plenty
Hello Friends,
On this weeks episode we get the pipe fittings installed on all of our new Groco Seacocks for Triteia and Camille seals them to their new custom G10 bases with Sikaflex. We then get to work installing them onto the boat starting with the bilge out.

I am very happy to see you are using real seacocks, not thru hulls with a ball valve. Real bronze seacocks, properly installed and bonded are usually good for twenty years or more. The ones with the stainless steel handles are inferior to the ones with bronze handles. The stainless gets brittle, corrodes, and breaks off. Even though, this is a much better job than the one on Black Lotus.

The Black Lotus job was what they could afford and was within reason considering it’s a 26ft boat that won’t be doing ocean cruising, I know the threads don’t match and all of that discussion but there are tens of thousands of boats with that set up that have sailed for years perfectly fine. I wouldn’t do it on my boat but it was what they could afford

@@SailorJames Yes, it is widespread industry practice but it is a bad one we should seek to eliminate. About 10-12 years ago Groco did a lab study on the thru-hull/ball valve vs flanged seacock. ABYC standards call for the ability to withstand a 500 lb lateral pull without water ingress. Every thru-hull/ball valve installation failed, but the seacocks withstood the pressure. Groco published the test results online and the boat builders went ballistic. So much so that Groco took the data down. Even today they are very reluctant to hand out the data even within the industry. I have been trying to lay my hands on it for three years. I understand BoatUs has some stats about sinkings that might be of value.

Hi there. My suggestion is to glass in the green supports you made and the next day to put in the seacocks. Regards from Switzerland, Silvano

In the perfect world that would have been ideal but we (thought) we were on a time crunch and it was VERY important that the bases be lined up exactly and the curvature of the hull would have caused them to slide down due to gravity, that would have meant putting release tape on the thru-hulls so we could install them while the bases kicked off making the entire process take many more days than we had at the time. We sikaflexed them on and came back with SIX10 epoxy and epoxied the edges to the hull.

Thank you! Was just told that I need to replace all my thru-hulls. I am a new owner, so overwhelmed. This makes it so much easier! Now a subscriber.

Great job. I am having to replace my seacocks in my Alberg 30. What size did you use for the cockpit drains?

Hey James & Camille, I'm really enjoying your videos. A wealth of no BS, practical info, greatly appreciated. I'm in the LA area, and am assuming Ventura Harbor Boat Yard is one of the more cost effective for do-it-your-selfers? Would love your advice.
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
Thanks for the nice comment! Ventura Habor Boat Yard is very affordable as yards go especially because they let you do all your own work. Its $51 after you pay for the haul out. One of our viewers told me there is a similarly yard in Oxnard but I don't know the name of it. It might be worth looking into and calling them for prices. But VHBY is the best for sure!

James, did you keep the original cockpit drains? I believe they are 1-1/4". Is the plan to use a 1-1/4"x1-1/2" bushing, or 1-1/4x1-1/2 Hose Barb adapter? Is there another solution? As I mentioned before, I am in the middle of this same project. 1-1/2" through hulls and seacocks are ordered. Curious what you're doing.
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
I installed 1 1/2 bronze thruhulls as drains because I had them on hand, I will replace them soon with new 1 1/2 cockpit drains with check valve balls to keep the water out of the cockpit

Best video I've seen for thru hulls! 2 questions; where did you get the backing material? I'm not looking forward to laying up my own, and second, what happens if the retaining bolts strip out the threads you tapped? Keep up the great work!
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
You can buy G10 at McMaster Carr in any shape and size and various colors, I thought of the bolt tread issues as well but remembered these seacocks wound ever come out of this boat unless they fail or the boat is salvaged so it’s likely they will just get cut out in those scenarios but I also can’t think of how they would ever get stripped because they are all in places that are protected

Don't you folks have a socket set?
@maatje4
@maatje4 4 года назад
Don’t screw the pipes in too hard, cause then al the sikaflex is pushed out! Loosely screw first, leave a 2mm space filled with the sikaflex and next day tighten the pipe, after the sikaflex has had time to dry. (At least, that is how I learned it)
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
That technique actually causes the adhesion to separate from the hull as it twists the cured sikaflex, it can also cause small cracks because the sika won’t turn uniformly

My A30 has 1-1/4" cockpit drains, which I assume is factory. I'm about to do this same project (already removed the old ones). I am considering going to 1-1/2". What size did you end up going with?

Thanks for the videos. Suggest you could make some jobs much easier/quicker if you used a socket wrench instead of an open/closed-end wrench as long as you have access from the top.

we wanted to control how tight they got in a measured way thats why we used a box wrench

James, please wear nitrile gloves when handing solvent laden rags. From personal experience it can cause chronic skin rashes and kidney issues. It’s so easy to ignore but please don’t
