@@PhantomWorksStudiosplease, please, PLEASE make sure to have the best virus protector on the market. and soon, whenever every single app pulls the plug on 7, please upgrade to Windows 11 or Windows 12 if it’s released at the time. I have been using Windows 11 for 1 year now, and it’s really easy to get used to, really great, and I’m guessing your used to the Windows icon being in the left, but with Windows 11 it’s in the center, and I have great news! You are able to customize it to look like Windows 7, with the same icon, the alignment, and everything! I have done it before, so I recommend upgrading to 11, and nobody is stopping you from customizing it to look EXACTLY like Windows 7!! However that’s your choice, and I am just trying to look out for my fellow computer users, as I have been in a bad position with my computer before, so I just want to make sure my fellow users are safe and comfortable! But please, make sure that if you stay on 7, that you are up-to-date, and have a great virus program that will ensure your security just as good as Windows Security and Firewall.

Got it the day it went retail. It's the last version with the OS/2 subsystem. It was so delayed in the deathmarch that was NT 5.0. By the time 2000 shipped Cairo had failed (yet again) and the updates, and option pack + IE's for NT 4 was just too much. 2000 had all the COM objects which took forever to register during install but changed the way you could program the OS, however .Net made it all more usable. In the professional world it's the first DDNS/Active Directory version and it was great for massive networks! Sadly all the RISC CPU's didn't make the cut, the Alpha64 wasn't public and there was that one preview for Itanium.. It's the last significant 32bit version of NT for me, afterwards with XP64 & 2003 Itanium/x64 it was all 64bit for me onwards.

Found that it was able to play about 80% of the games that worked for me in Win98 after changing the game .exe to use "Compatibility mode". Otherwise it is like a 40% chance. @@TheRetroRecall I have a 486DX66 and a Philips P3105, a XT clone, but both are in a cupboard. I have no desk space for it. Last time I tried them out was 10 years ago. I also had a 2003 Pentium 4 HT, but I used that for 1 hour per week as Backup Server with FreeBSD. A few month ago the motherboard died after 21 years of service. After 1969 I worked 4 years in prototype test of main frames. Afterwards I moved to OS and application software development during 40 years. So I'm more interested in the OSes, like Linux and Windows and less in the hardware. So Virtualbox is ideal for me, since it has some decent emulation of older hardware from the time of e.g Windows 1.04 or 3.1.

Should install the server version on a core2duo (high end) or a i3/i5/i7 and have fun with it. To see how it fares with modernish processors and tasks, Then go through 3rd party mods to show how it still handles things. And i know it doesn't support hyperthreading (but it will see it as another cpu when changed) And since it supports multiple cpus (at least the server versions) it should be interesting to see how it handles 4 or more cores Might well think you're using a board with 4 processors or more. There's also gpus that are far newer than it but still have support (titan series or the 900 series i think had support for 2k, at least XP) And there is a program that allows it to run XP (i think there's one that allows XP to run vista as well, not certain if it goes further than that). but it'd be interesting to do that, give it lots of ram (2k doe shave a 64 bit version as does NT). Also the option of a antivirus (old version that can still get the modern updates, avg i think) Would be fun for a quirky build to see how 2k still handles modern times. There'd probably be more esp with the XP hack app. And possibly modifying XP drivers to work on 2k too (if they don't already). It'd then also be interesting to see how it still handles things like youtube and web browsing

Windows 2000 was awesome. When I was old enough to get my own PC I got a used one with a fresh install of 2000. I think our family PC was running XP home at the time and we had an older 98 and 3.11 machine too. 2000 Was awesome since it ran basically everything that XP did but consumed less resources. All my games worked on it and I definitely preferred using it over the family XP machine. Now that I’m older I realize it was probably just the low resource usage of 2000 plus the fact that the early Pentium 4s were pretty terrible. My 2000 machine was rocking a pentium 3 that smoked the Pentium 4 in the family PC. Definitely some nostalgia factor but still, it was the first OS I truly got to tinker around with since it was on my own PC.

I think I spent 90% of my time in Windows 2000, it did everything I wanted it to do. 13:00 Windows 2000 doesn't require NTFS, it can also be installed on a FAT32 partition. Instead of deleting out the Windows 98 partition, you could have selected it and it would have given you an option to keep the partition intact, format it with FAT32 or Format it with NTFS. ❤lthe video! I have memories of Win 2k a lot in school. I am curious where do you get boxed copies of old software/OSs and period correct hardware. Amazon doesn’t have and I am in a fixed income so kind of hard to come across

I am fortunate to have collected and saved over the years. I also have friends, family who donate to the channel. Keep your eyes out at thrift stores, online marketplaces, etc.. You never know what you might find. :). Thanks for watching!

My favorite version of Windows. I ran it until forced to XP when some things stopped being supported by it.

Agreed. It was a great OS, however I also loved XP :)

my first visit to Microsoft campus was two weeks before the release of Windows 2000 RTM, I was working at Office Depot selling computers so they wanted to make sure that sales people knew the difference, I still have my copy of the OS they gave me back then, I wish I had kept the sleeve they gave me for it

Wish I had more stories like it, but things are less impressive now that I work at MS :D@@TheRetroRecall

Windows 2000 was indeed a very stable system. I still look at it from the business perspective, because in that time I was managing complete networks. So - On top of Windows 2000 server , I was also managing the Novell Netware 4.1 and UNIX systems. I think Windows 2000 was one of the best stable user systems. I was in a mixed hardware environment where we also used Sun hardware, but everyone preferred the Windows workstations. At the time I was transferring at home from Acorn RiscOS to Windows, but also dabbled with with that (at that time) rough Linux installations. Strange enough I still have RiscOS running, but now on the Raspberry Pi 400 (and even faster than on the original Acorn RiscPC hardware). I still use Windows (Windows 10 at the moment), but mainly Linux (Mint Cinnamon). That last one probably because of my UNIX background because , although there are some big differences, Linux is "familiar ground" for me. At the moment I am also doing "retro" stuff, because I am restoring my first computer (Cosmac Super Elf) and my old Acorn Atom back to full working order...

Awesome! Thanks for sharing this. Please let me know how you do with your retro builds!

@@TheRetroRecall Sure I will. At this moment I am waiting for a shipment of tantalium caps (and some other parts) for the Cosmac Super Elf, because the old ones looked very suspicious with some very thin cracks. Not that strange, because the board is from somewhere in between 1978 and 1979.

Thank you for bring back some great wonderful memories. I used to work at a private school here in the UK and I was responsible for upgrading all of the computers to Windows 2000, and then connecting them to the domain server. I lost count of how many I upgraded, but after a few hours of installing Windows 2000 I remembered the CD Key (literally burned into my memory for years after lol). I think I must have upgraded well over 200+ computers to Windows 2000. I never had any problems with upgrading all of the computers from NT4 Workstation, and a few Windows 98 systems, but I think thats because I slipstreamed SP1 onto the CD's that I was using to install 2000. The only problems I had was with a few bits of software that I had to re-register which was MIDI software which was a pain in the neck as had to do it over the phone.

I love when people share these memories. I can imagine living through that time going through the deployments and facing the individual challenges. It would have been fun.

@@TheRetroRecall Thanks for the retro memory recall. The deployment wasn't that bad, I faced a few odd driver and software problems, but was quickly resolved. I was lucky as we could deploy software installs from the Windows 2000 Servers, so we set them up to do that overnight, like deploying Office 2000, and antivirus updates. I've still got my original Windows 2000 CD and box somewhere. Thanks for all of the great content and look forward to more in the future.

How about doing a dual boot system 95 and 98se, my use case would be I have a voodoo 1 card which runs best on 95, but my agp voodoo 3 3000 runs best on 98se
@TheRetroRecall
@TheRetroRecall 10 месяцев назад
Ah very good. I guess as 98 was really compatible with anything 95 would be running, wouldnt you want to just have everything running in 98? I have a Voodoo3 3000 and love it. Mines the PCI variant which I see is becoming quite scarce.

@@TheRetroRecall The 3 3000 works well with 98se, however I have really early 3dfx games which I can only get running with the Orchid Righteous 3D through a DOS window and 98se doesn't work (or I can't get it to work) and forcing the driver off the CD doesn't work, might just be me, but in 95 works well 😕
