I love the euphonium it's like a brass cello, expressive and warm. Shout out to all Euphonium players

The euphonium is not nearly as buzzy as the cello. The real brass cello is yet another instrument invented by Adolphe Sax. No, not the bass clarinet, but rather the saxophone. Sax intended for the bass saxophone to be an adjunct to the cello.

Yeah a euphonium is usually a mediator between tubas trombones and trumpets, but it makes a great solo instrument

I started out on the trombone, but then there was one of those kids who was born in a music family and played all of the instruments. He picked up the school's euphonium and started playing it. I asked "what is that?" He answered and told me it was a euphonium. I got to try it, and it was really fun. I wanted to play euphonium. I don't know how my parents were okay with this, but they got me a euphonium for my birthday. That was a fateful day. Skip forward to high school (when I actually get to play it). I join the wind ensemble for trombone, but at the end of my sophomore year, I switched to euphonium. That was the best music-related decision I made in my life. Junior year was just me getting better while playing tough things on euphonium. Senior year, I was really serious about euphonium and got into some honor bands. I just love the instrument. If I ever started up a professional symphony orchestra, I'd have a euphonium player. I don't want to be a conductor though. I am going to be a composer. ...okay, now it's time to count up how many times the word 'I' and the word 'euphonium' were mentioned. Whoever is right gets the satisfaction of being right.

I wish, in the 10 years of school I played this instrument, that literally anyone had explained to me the mechanical purposes of the tubing and the valves in this detail. Amazing video, thank you for making it and sharing it. Cudos to Byron Fulcher in particular, excellently presented. His expert knowledge of the instrument's history was so colorful.

The question that should be asked is very simple, "When a euphonium is called for, why is not a first class euphonium player brought in to play this magnificent intstrument Too many orchestral conductors will even replace a euphonium for some lesser horn even though the euphonium is written is as the instrument to be played. There are now 242 orchestral pieces written calling for the euphonium Conductors need to be educated about this wonderful horn and must do the horn justice by having a first class player play the euphonium when the composer calls for it. This presentation was quite helpful and instructive. Thanks

I really loved the in-depht technical explanations of the instrument, the summary in the video description and of course the musical examples. For an aspiring composer like me, it's very enlightening to know the instrument's range, a bit of history, and all the involved techniques and ways of playing it. Thanks so much, looking forward!

This is an excellent discussion of the euphonium's role in orchestral music, and it makes reference to the British brass band tradition as well. In addition, the euphonium is often featured in the music of European and American wind ensembles, which include woodwinds (unlike brass bands). For example, in this march by the Czech composer Karol Pádivý, notice how the euphoniums have a rich, singing countermelody on the second presentation of the first strain. Then, in the Trio section, the euphoniums play the theme on the first presentation, and when the theme is taken up by the woodwinds in the repetition, the euphoniums have an achingly lovely countermelody, which they repeat (joined by the trombones) for the final recapitulation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ekigzp6khqQ.html

I absolutely LOVE the sound of the euphonium! So warm smooth and beautiful; you have such a lovely tone and you play gorgeously. I play trumpet. I would love to learn the euphonium and another favourite, the French horn but I just don't think I'd have enough time to practice and learn another instrument and still keep up with my trumpet practice ..so, I'll just have enjoy listening. I wonder how the resonance must feel when playing a clear low tone. I bet it's quite the feeling. I bet it is similar to what I experienced once while new a very large African lion when he was making a low call and the sound from his lungs I could feel vibrate or resonate in my whole being, especially my chest. I loved learning all about the tubing, thank you. You have so much more range of octaves than the trumpet. I am hoping someday to get a good flugelhorn. Playing it would be very much like the trumpet but, with that lovely low round sound. I am blessed with many trumpets, two of which are some of the best horns made in their time. My father in law played trumpet and he gave me his favourite and several others. His favourite dates back to 1933, when this make was improved greatly and was the best trumpet of that time. In fact it is still considered one of the best. But there are not many left in pristine condition. My instrument was keep in pristine condition. It is silver and has beautiful fine etchinģ art deco design and the whole trumpet has art deco design. This trumpet is King. I also have a beautiful pristing vintage silver Couesnon. It can be changed from a Bb trumpet to a concert C trumpet. There is another very interesting vintage piece I have is what I was told is a slide trumpet but, is actually a saprano trombone. I do know where I could any information on how to play it. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction so I could learn this cute little horn. Well, I have written too much. God bless you and again I say, your playing is an absolutely beautiful! ✝️🕊🙏🏻❤☘

When I was in the 8th grade, I was a trombone player in our schools brass band. I broke my left arm while playing outside one day, so I couldn't physically hold my trombone. My music teacher let me borrow a euphonium, because it only required the use of my right hand. I remember after one of our concerts, several people commented that the band sounded "fuller", and my teacher actually wanted me to stay on the euphonium.

Me. That anime is amazing. Being a former oboist, I got into it because of Liz and the Bluebird. It was tremendously disappointing at first when I realized the focus of the series was a Euphonium player. I mean, Euphonium? Seriously? Now it’s the brass instrument I most want to try. The horn is gorgeous, but quite unwieldy, with an ugly low range. Hopefully one day I’ll learn enough to be able to play Asuka’s song.

Frosted Corn Flakes After you dismantle and soak the Euph in the bath (not the valves) make sure you use a snake on the inside of the tubes and wipe the outside. Start by greasing one side of the valve pipe with slide grease and working it in and out and back and forth. Wipe and repeat a couple of times until the movement is smoother. Do it for the other side of the valve pipe. Once both done smear clean grease and put the valve pipes in properly.

As a euphonium player in high school and an avid orchestral music lover, I have struggled for years not being able to have a future in this instrument and having to switch to being a trombone player. This video makes me hopeful that though very few prior literature will be available for euphonium players, it will inspire this next generation of composers to write for the instrument, so that we too can be recognized and appreciated, so long as conductors aren't always stuck in the past. Thank you.

Several thoughts: I've been playing euph for 50+ years, with some time on tuba as well. I have two euphs - a 4 value King and a 5 (!) valve Besson. Encountered a girl at a middle school concert a few years ago carrying a big case. "Baritone?" I asked. "No," she replied proudly, "euphonium!" When I told her I played, she said I was the 1st euph player she'd ever met. Wish some mention had been made of Holst's 2nd Suite in F. Very famous euph solo. And finally, uphs are great jazz instruments. Check out Gus Mancuso and Tom Ball.

I just wanted to hear the instrument played a little bit and wound up listening to the whole video- EXCELLENT- and I've some experience playing a difficult instrument- I played the bass baritone clarinet in our orchestra in jr high and church- I wish I had stayed with it- aww hindsight lol

I was a teenager eupho player in a brass band,. I've just learnt an almost embarrassing amount of fundamental facts about this instrument for the first time. Great video, wish I'd seen it 30 years ago!

The euphonium is such a beauty. It really deserves its name. What an insightful video about this wonderful instrument. And by the way, airs variés is French and the é has to be pronounced because of the accent. Variés is pronounced a bit like vary-ey. I can't tell you how the correct French pronunciation sounds but this is as close as I can write it.

Former Baritone and Tuba player here. I never had a chance to try euphonium. I do love the warmth of the instrument. This is one of the best descriptions I've run across of the working of the valves in a brass instrument. Your unassuming attitude facing the camera creates an atmosphere a relaxed learning which I love. Thank you for this delightful lesson. Keep up the good work, and God bless!

Thank you for an entertaining and educational video! My 13 year old daughter is in love with her euphonium, but like many players is frustrated at its relative lack of presence in the orchestral repertoire. I'm a trombonist and have had to borrow her school instrument to play parts in my community band, but since I was never taught the instrument, I too struggle with fingering quickly. I appreciate that the beauty of the instrument can only inspire composers to increase its visibility in future compositions. And hopefully older pieces will have adequate transcriptions to incorporate this instrument.

I meet the Euphonium because of the anime Hibike Euphinium, immediately caught my attention how diferent the sound was, it never occurs to me to search a video about the instrument, and i love it even more, i kinda expect it was a bit more tricky to play

This was great. I love how you go more in depth than in the older videos (which also were great). You should make more videos like this for more uncommon orchestral instruments, or maybe even update some of the older ones. Just great!

The solo in Bydlo was originally for tuba. Specifically, a French high C tuba a major second higher than the Euphonium. It also had 6 valves. 1, 2, 4, and 5 (flat half-step) are all normal. 3 is usually 'long' lowering pitch a major third. The 6th valve is the same as 1+4, a perfect fifth.

Dear Mr. Fulcher, I first got to know you when I was a young classical composer at the age of 17, often referring to Andrew Hugill user's manual to the orchestra from 2005, which I still refer to today. And here I am, 15 years later, still learning more and more from you. Always so pleasing. So good to see you. Until I e-meet you again, thank you and be well!

@@philharmonia_orchestra I always loved the Euphonium since it was the bridge between a tuba (bass) and the trumpet (soprano). Never got around to buying one since it occupies si much space. Anyway ordered a 4 valve model yesterday. Will be playing at a Wedding in church next month.

My band director who was a truly great bop musician loved to improvise on his battered rotary valve Euphonium. Very harmonically advanced playing. He was a bone player.

The euphonium is my favourite brass instrument to compose for. My Symphony No. 1 in D Minor has a brass section of only Euphonium. I did that because that was what I had to work with, and it was marvelous. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you.
