You communicate so well it hurts my feelings you're not a hit already amongst book lovers on youtube. Greetings from a fellow Portuguese enthusiast of literature and of new contemporary expressions such as this one, bringing the Algorithm into a place of fiction.

That's extremely kind and generous of you to say! I love talking about books I love! Portuguese, eh? I recently covered João Reis and I've got Lobo Antunes and Saramago and Pessoa on the way!

Hi, I'm reading a fascinating book called Empire Adrift, about prince regent Dom Joao moving from Lisbon to Rio De Janeiro to escape from Napoleon's troops entering the Iberian peninsula, and then controlling his empire from Brazil. I highly recommend it to you. Sorry for the intrusion.

Thank you for bringing this work to light! I’m a big admirer of what you do, it’s commentary and analysis like yours, and a few other ‘booktubers’ on here, that has had a significant influence on my reading and writing habits these last few years. Work like this brings that much needed balance, that figurative light, to the otherwise fragmented and overly truncated material that we are all doomed to consume here in the digital abyss.

Wow--I had to listen to this one twice. I have an interest in literary fiction and poetry about the Big A that runs the world. Definitely getting this one on the tbr. I wonder have you read QualityLand by Marc-Uwe King? It is a much more lighthearted but satirical angle on the subject. The book is set up in a way that you experience the "tailored advertising" experience that is typical while using these ubiquitous devices. Very clever send up. Love your channel, I think you do a real service for the reading public who may not ever become familiar with some of these authors otherwise. Cheers!

I have not read that one, so thanks for reading recommendations with me! I also appreciate your kind words about the channel. This has been a real joy for me.

Personhood, person, body, corpus, corpulence, corpulent, corporate, corporation, corruption. To quote the philosopher JM Kuczynski "Algorithm: A fixed procedure for carrying out a task. The rules that we learn in grade school to multiply, add, etc., multi-digit numbers are algorithms. By formalizing inferences, logicians create algorithms for determining whether, given two statements, one of them follows from the other. A problem with algorithms is that what one has to know in order to know whether a given algorithm is applicable to a given task is often much heftier than what one would have to know to carry out that task in an ad hoc manner. In this fact lies the doom of attempts to algorithmize-or, to use the more popular term-“mechanize” thought."

Nice review! As someone who's also quite into experimental poetry, it's nice to see this stuff getting attention.

I'm amazed by the repertoire of a writer's vocabulary . How could you have such a vast collection of words . What's your source of knowing words other than reading books. Would u recommend me any books for knowing obscure , recondite & grandiloquent words. I , myself , an ameteur logophile im always facinated by the beautiful words and prose . what's list of books should one wordssmith/logophile should possessed ? I like to learn new words thematically , is there any specific books like that.

Great review, and I appreciate what you had to say, but the constant cuts really hamper the video. There has always been a somewhat organic feel to your videos, but the frequent cutting is taking away from that . Otherwise keep up the great work.

I really appreciate your feedback here. You’re the second person to share the same comment with me on this video alone. The main reason I do the tight cuts is to cut down on the runtime. But now I’m rethinking how to find a better balance. Thanks so much!

In no particular order: José Saramago and Fernando Pessoa and João Reis (Portugal); Clarice Lispector and Luis Fernando Verissimo (Brazil).

I'm certain Lessard himself was choking back the bile while he was assembling.

Great video, but the frequent jump during cuts mid sentence make it a bit hard to watch.

Thanks, and my apologies. It's a delicate balancing act. If I leave the cuts _out_ , the videos become much longer with bloat (and, sadly, the longer timestamps can discourage a lot of potential viewers, especially when they're not familiar with the author/book). One thing I can do to help reduce the spastic nature of the cuts is to try not to move around so much. That's what causes that jarring cut. Thanks so much for your feedback!
