It's time for my annual IPC - Instrument Proficiency Check - and I share my tips for how I prepare for the flight test. I'm doing the test in a Cirrus SR22, VH-KJN, from Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne.
I hold a full Instrument Rating (used to be called a Command Instrument Rating) and fly a Cirrus SR22 under the Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in Australia. Great video and fantastic storyboarding Stefan. I had a giggle when you stuck your head in the luggage area, you have some wild hair going on there mate. If you head up to Sydney, make sure you check out our quiet little strip in Wollongong YWOL. Cheers for another year of flying in the clouds.

Bit late to the ball park, but summer is around the corner Stef and for a true challenge I say come to New Zealand! My aviation college recently brought three C172S aircraft across via Lorde Howe Island and Norfolk Island so I'm sure your SR22 is up to the challenge! Would be great to see you over here and the flying is truly spectacular. Great videos mate, looking forward to more!

Great video you should come down to YBRS (Barwon Heads airport it’s a little town just outside of Geelong and it’s along the coast. It’s a great place to fly to.

One suggestion I'd make as part of the flight planning process is creating a mud map - writing down what is going to happen, and where. I'm not sure if I can link it here, but the blogspot 'makingtimeforflying' has a good post on it. It should mark distances and times between waypoints/landmarks, as well as altitudes and tracks, and any other useful info. Writing down things like the descent checks usually helps me too.

Great video as always Stef, would love to see a flight to Lilydale, or even a longer nav up north to the Whitsundays. There is a nice strip called Shute Harbour, which is approx 10nm to the north of Hamilton island, and the landing fees are cheaper.

Tassie is VERY high on the list. Flinders Island is also a consideration, I'd love to do some over water stuff, and I bet the drone footage over there would be pretty epic. Thanks Richard.

Come up to the Sunshine Coast ;) YCDR (Caloundra) - Head from there up to Fraser Island and land at Orchid Beach! Absolutely stunning place! You land right next to the beach!

Hello Stefan huge fan of your videos and have seen your little plane (VH-TDS) around Moorabbin a lot I’m currently a student pilot at soar aviation flying the little Foxbats, just wondering how did you get your endorsement for the cirrus?

Hey Damian, thanks for the comment. I did my Cirrus transition training with Mike Walden who runs Walden Aviation Services - flywas.com.au - awesome Instructor and a great bloke. it took around 4-5 flights and some ground theory to get the certification. Moving from the SR20 to the SR22 was quicker though. Say hello to Mike from me if you speak to him.

That's a theory book written by (the legendary) Steve Pearce from Peter Bini Advanced Flight Training. You get it when you do the Instrument Rating with Steve. It's excellent, one of the best (and easiest to understand) text books I've ever read. Not sure if Steve sells them separately, but give them a call on (03) 9580 5295 and ask. Tell them I said hello.

I always like to say the best thing about flying the yarra valley is that if you have an engine failure, rather than just looking for any old paddock to land in you look for which winery you'd like to have lunch at an park it there!

Mark McCulfor i use fsx all the time. Its really such a great thing to practice on. I also have many add on's too theres one called VATSIM its a live server you join that has atc online (real people) But overall fsx or any sim is great i personally use fsx as theres lots more add on things for it than others

I used X Plane 11 quite a lot and it helped me massively through my IFR training! Just get a cheap joystick from JB Hi-Fi and you can fly all your approaches before your flights! Even my instructor said how much I was improving from flight to flight due to it

Great vid Stefan, congratulations. What yoke do you use for the flight sim? Here's an idea - I understand REX had problems getting enough qualified pilots. They opened a cadet school at Wagga Wagga. How about a flight to Wagga Wagga to check out their setup there?
