From your explanation what is the instrumental variable and which variable is it replacing?

I’m a little unclear as to why we don’t actually need to observe ability. Doesn’t ability need to be observed so we know whether ability correlated with distance to university? (i.e. We want to check on the exogeneity assumption?)

I like the way that this is explained, but where do distance to college and ability come from as variables? Do we need to test against any conceivable confounder?
