Nestor Daniel Jurado Betancur, Civil Engineer, EMP, and Juan David Masso Martinez, Project Management and Engineering Professional, EMP, present their talk "Instrumentation monitoring for the Ituango Dam".
Abstract: The Ituango Dam is the most important hydroelectric project in Colombia: the Project consists of a 225 m high ECRD (Earth core rockfill dam) with a capacity of 20 million m3; a 77 km length reservoir; and an underground power station (2,400 MW of installed capacity). The power plant works, located in the rock mass of the right bank, comprise the main cavern of the mechanical room that hosts eight units of 300 MW of nominal power each, with Francis-type turbines. The spillway has a total length of 400 m and a discharge capacity of 22,000 m3/s.
Since the start of the construction of the main works in 2013, geotechnical monitoring has been carried out to follow the stability of the excavation of the caverns, spillway, diversion tunnels among others. In 2018, in order to obtain timely information about the stability of the main works, a Technical Monitoring Center (TMC) was created for continuous monitoring of seismological, hydraulic, geodetic, interferometric, and geotechnical variables. Currently, four of the eight generation units are fully operational, and the civil work progress is 92%. The TMC continues to actively participate in the development of the project, centralizing, automating, analyzing and integrating all information of interest for the engineers, with the aim of transmitting a safety message to the communities downstream the river and other stakeholders.
Speaker Bios: Nestor Daniel Jurado Betancur and Juan David Masso Martinez will present this technical talk. Nestor is a civil engineer who graduated from Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia and has an MSc in geotechnical engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He has 10 years of experience in consulting on and field assessment for tunnel excavations, slope stability and foundations. He is currently part of the civil works team for EPM (constructor and operator of the Ituango Dam Project), where he coordinates work teams and executes the construction contracts. Juan is a geologist and graduated from the University of Caldas, Colombia. He has more than 5 years of experience in ground monitoring and worked for the Colombian Geological Survey, analyzing seismic data to track volcanic activity and supporting eruption early warning systems. He is currently focused on using remote sensing tools such as InSAR for detailed terrain analysis and geotechnical instrumentation such as inclinometers and piezometers to ensure geotechnical stability during large-scale hydropower and infrastructure projects.
