Episode 53 - Hey friends! In this episode, I install my roof tracks that are needed to mount anything to the roof of the sprinter van and spend two full days insulating my van with Havelock Sheep Wool!
I had originally planned to use spray foam, but the havelock wool is a much healthier and cleaner option and there is ZERO risk of it warping the walls of the van! Its from SHEEP!!

Lucas - This is seriously one of the best Havelock install videos we have ever seen.... and there are a lot! You captured the reason for using a high performance and natural product plus you are a total boss when it comes to installing. We love the ride up the mountains at the end of the day too... after all that's why we're doing this. Many thanks! Team Havelock

This is amazing!! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave an incredible comment. I am so glad I decided to go with havelock rather than a spray foam alternative! Cheers to making such a great product for van life! 🙏🏽

@@LucasCatania17 Choice to hear you got the wool from New Zealand, I am thinking of insulation for my van too and just watched a clip on a current affairs programme here in New Zealand, will be using wool (it's fire proof and natural!), what is the silver stuff under the insulation?
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 3 года назад
@@kieron82 exactly! fire proof, all natural and one of the best at wicking away moisture! the silver stuff underneath is sound deadening panels. it helps so much making the van quiet when driving, especially when combined with the wool!

Hi Lucas, we are just getting organized on building out a 2019 Transit 148”. I’m looking at the wool insulation but a bit concerned that road bumps, knocks and vibrations may have the vertical pieces of insulation settling down. Will a spot of 3m glue stick to the wool? Was this something working with the material that you figured would not be a problem? Thank you from Alaska
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 3 года назад
The 3m glue will definitely work and it’s actually what I did for mine. One side of the wool batt is more of a singular piece while the other side is a little more loose, so using a spray adhesive works really well. I also used mold/rot resistant string to help keep the wool up too. Hope this helps!

Will the insulation sag over time? Seems like a nice option for potential future rebuilds, you can take it out and it's not stuck to the walls like spray foam. Smart to not skimp on insulation, might as well do it right if you are putting in all that time
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 4 года назад
The only place it might sag is in the walls. But I double layered it so it is really really tight. I’m also going to leave the rot resistant twine up and I’m thinking when I face it with plywood I will just put some adhesive on the back to keep it stuck to the back of the wall!
@NoFate247
@NoFate247 4 года назад
@@LucasCatania17 Yeah, I'm thinking sagging will be minimal considering how tightly you packed it. Great job and Impressed with your patience.

I installed 100mm of sheep's wool insulation in my van and covered it with 9mm ply and did not use a vapor barrier. I removed the ceiling ply after a few weeks one morning while there was frost on my van roof. It was soaking with condensation. I redid the job with a breathable vapor barrier and re-checked under the same conditions one frosty morning. Bone dry! A lesson learned.
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 3 года назад
oh wow thats good to know! is it havelock wool or another brand? havelock specifically says no vapor barrier haha. i havent had an issue (yet) with mine so hopefully it stays that way!

The sheep wool is a very good idea, i try to stay away from the chemical crap myself!! My uncle was doing some renovating in switzerland and he brought back some wool insulating bats, and my aunt made a bed topper for the guest cabin,with them, and ive never felt such a comfortable bed in my life.
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 4 года назад
i am glad you think so as well! i can see the benefits of spray foam, but it really isnt meant to be in a small space like a van! i really think the wool is the best thing. and i didnt even think about that but a bed out of wool bats would be so comfy! thank you so much for watching again!!

You won’t regret it! So far I am super impressed with the wool! It’s been 15 degrees and snowing now in Utah! I used 5 bags total. I packed my ceiling with two batts each so double the insulation and did every nook and cranny and the headliner area

i love that you chose to go with the wool! I know you said its fire resistant, but is there still some worry about fire with the electric wires so entwined w the insulation?
@LucasCatania17
@LucasCatania17 4 года назад
Going the Mother Nature route! It smells so good too! That’s definitely a valid concern. I don’t think it will be an issue but most of the wires are wrapped with electrical tape to combat that!

wow 5 bags for 6m van? oO i thought they mention 3 on their website. how much did u pay for each bag?

they mention 3 bags, but that doesnt include the headliner area or any of the extra nooks and crannys. its just the recommendation for the walls and ceiling. i also double insulated the ceiling. i just paid the full retail price listed on their website!

There’s a app that can track engine idle time that helps determine proper oil change intervals 1 hour of idle is like 35 miles 2001-2009 sprinters are best as they have no urea based exhaust after treatment system much more reliable and cheaper to own and operate thanks for sharing about the wool I will send you a link for that app
