Very smart going with the insulation board. At least you don’t have to spend the time cutting it back to fit the walls and ceilings. Great job!!!!

Important thing none of sprayfoamers will tell you is there is no aluminium foil layer with spray insulation. Aluminium is most resistable to passage of water molecules, so it is used as vapor barrier. Sprayfoam HAS condensation, just it is inside of it so you are breathing mould all the time after few years. Anyway, vapor barrier is used in civil engineering to stop condensation inside the wall and due to the temperature difference between the room and the outside air. Since warmer air can hold more water in it and vice versa. Good call, hope the bottom of the boat is good, most are hiding it when selling. Good luck!

Heyya thanks for your comment ... I never really properly thought of the mould aspect but that makes sense ... I get the foil layer as it reflects the heat/cold but also doubles as a vapour barrier. Haha appreciate that. Please to report the hull is all good 💪🏽💪🏽

You can follow up with cans of spray foam to seal gaps. We use a hybrid approach in the States. Both can be used together. I recommend using insulation boards and foam for your dividing walls as well. It just helps to allow the heat from your stove to saturate and evenly heat your boat. The cleaner the job, the less coal you need. A stove is essential to heat a narrowboat. There is more than enough dead fall to fuel your boat's heating needs if you gather a week in advance. New subscriber. Keep cracking on. Much love and encouragement from Oregon USA

Foam board has its uses and is good but it needs to be fixed in place correctly and it is very hard to fix in place properly, I did not see how you did it but most use some kind of bonding adhesive like gorilla bond or no nails type product and these are a pretty thick product and people generally zig zag it all over the board and then stick it to the hull and try and push it on but it will always cause air gaps unless you cover 100% of the surface, and in these air gaps it will allow water to condense on the steal which will cause molt at best and at worst it will cause rust to form on the hull and it will start rusting from inside out, spray foam might be more expensive and might have more clean up but it bonds and covers the hull 100% with no air gaps.
@mike-driftwoodfolk2651
@mike-driftwoodfolk2651 9 месяцев назад
Great comment! Completely agree with you there. We used a high bond adhesive but we also foam the edges and tape them for a full vapour barrier but also full coverage. All the steel has been treated so if it does condensate on the smallest gaps the steel is protected. The condensation will either evaporate or drip into the bilges and then get pumped out. With spray foam it has no vapour barrier like the foil so it actually still condensates but within itself which can cause mould too ... Both have there advantages and disadvantages really. Ive recently had to pull a section off to put some wires in and its completed free from condensation and any signs of water ... Actually looks brand new so very happy with that. Appreciate your comment and great thoughts 👍🏼

Are you going to Foil Wrap? If you have not seen Greg Virgoe he is worth a watch and also building a Narrowboat with Grandma and Grandad is good, It would be an extra expense but would ensure the risk of cold spots is sorted. Best of luck either way I am looking forward ro watching more.

Is anyone else getting a foreboding about the removal of the waste tank? What are the grey water regulations on the UK canals and rivers? I'm thinking that tank is big for a reason and that's because, along with black water (sewerage), grey water from domestic drains such as tubs, showers and sinks must also be contained.
@DriftwoodFolk
@DriftwoodFolk Год назад
The tank is for toilet waste only as it was for the pump out toilet. You can use a compost or cassette toilet instead which most boaters do. Shower and sink waste on the other hand is allowed to go straight in the canal
@docostler
@docostler Год назад
@@DriftwoodFolk There you go, then. I've worked in a federally built Small Craft Harbour here on the west coast of Canada of fifteen years now and during that time a couple of our live-aboards have tried composting toilets with mixed results (mostly due to venting issues). That they are popular in the UK perhaps indicates a poor quality of installation done at my marina. I'm really enjoying your series so far, still catching up though. Part of the the thrill you're experiencing is precisely _because_ you're flying blind. Well done.

Lovely job! How did you decide not to keep the Rockwool?
@zell4578
@zell4578 Год назад
earthwool requires a larger cavity than it's insulation board counterpart, i work in construction and the current regulations in uk is 150mm for rockwool or 100mm cavity for insulation boards, i assume since their boat has such a thin cavity to put the insulation in, celotex would be far superior in term of retaining heat, no idea about spray foam we've never used it in any extention i've been apart of in the last 10 years
@davidtilley2168
@davidtilley2168 11 месяцев назад
Really enjoyed your video but a little confused as to your costings. I am looking at a 38ft Cruiser stern narrowboat (which gives about 8m length internally) By my calculations I would need about 25 insulation boards which comes to £425 plus ancillaries. Am I missing something?
@mike-driftwoodfolk2651
@mike-driftwoodfolk2651 9 месяцев назад
Hi David appreciate your comment and your question. We've actually got 25mm thermolite boards (basically celotex) but they are half the price for the same thing. At last count we've used 22ish boards and we are fully insulated accept the partitions so for a 38ft with 8m internal I reckon 18-20 boards would work ... Il work it out for you if you'd like??

@mike-driftwoodfolk2651
@mike-driftwoodfolk2651 Год назад
@@tonysmith5713 yer I mean it was a tad daunting as we had only been told the basics about an hr before setting off, plus the 20ft locks at night aren't great, but after a few hrs of river cruising, the sun out, no one around except the wildlife, we soon settled into it. (although the seat is much to be desired) And quickly realised how she handles and what she liked and didn't like. I'm always going at 100mph so to slow down and see the country side from different angles averaging 4mph was a nice change. Overall though we really enjoyed it.

Another issue with sprayfoam is that it off-gasses and shrinks over time, creating voids. Celotex is a better option.
@DriftwoodFolk
@DriftwoodFolk Год назад
Good to know!
@stuartcole3759
@stuartcole3759 Год назад
That’s wrong I’ve been using it for 25 years. It sticks to the steel like shit to a blanket. It expands into all the little gaps you can’t even see. The gaps you get behind the celotex will condensate and over time it runs down and stains your woodwork. Even on the flat cabin sides they are slightly bowed and you end up with a gap.
@michaelb2388
@michaelb2388 Год назад
If spprayfoam gasses then cellotex will too. It's all. PU foam. The main benefit is cost and the fact your get a uniform thickness with PU foam boards
@stuartcole3759
@stuartcole3759 Год назад
@@michaelb2388 yes I agree but because the sheet version leaves a gap between the steel and the insulation condensation forms. Not just a bit but running with water. I’ve refitted dozens of narrowboats that have badly stained woodwork it looks as though there was a water leak. It has its place but not on steel boats.
