Started insulating the shed / workshop with rigid insulation and Great Stuff Foam. Pretty easy cutting foam board and spray foaming around the edge. Insulation works great in my small makers space. I shot the video with an iPhone 8 plus and edited with iMovie.

Interesting..... foam insulating with expanding foam in the seams. I like it! Should be good for sound proofing too. Good luck, brother!

One benefit is being air tight. Thanks TBW

Quik question I have not even the slightest clue when it comes to this stuff but I am in the process of making a small shed inside my garage to store some items but I want to insulate it . The garage is not insulated and I live in SoCal so you can imagine the heat in it. I saw some precut foam kits at Home Depot so I bought one just to see how they would fit in the existing open wall and they are very snug should I cut them all to leave a quarter on each side to fill in with spray foam or not ?
@elpollo8950
@elpollo8950 5 лет назад
Also will the foam insulation be enough to keep that storage shed cool even if the rest of the garage is not . I leave the side door open at al times and the garage door also opened a few inches preety much al year round just to keep airflow going thru it

Liquid nails makes a special glue for gluing styrofoam. The regular stuff you used eats away at the styrofoam and eventually the styrofoam breaks away from the wall. But maybe the great stuff will help keep it in their.

Thank you. I came here specifically to see if he used liquid nails because I want to insulate my shed with styrofoam and I had thought liquid nails would work. So it's good to know that there's a special glue for styrofoam. Also, I hadn't thought initially about leaving gaps and filling it in with expansion foam I was going to try to cut all the pieces to size and snug them in but this looks like it might work better.

They say it confuses the heat and cold draft by putting some panels in upside down. it's like a multipronged attack. very scientific...

You can leave the can of foam connected to the gun as long as you don't let it sit for more than 30 days. Running cleaner through the gun after every use is going to wreck the seals inside of the gun in no time.
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 6 лет назад
Thanks for the heads up.
@ToolsWithAdrius
@ToolsWithAdrius 6 лет назад
When the foam is getting close to 30 days on the gun, you can just spray a bunch of foam out to get things moving again (after shaking the can and gun for 1 minute), that resets the time for another 30 days.

are you not supposed to leave a small gap between the insulation and the wall of the shed to stop sweating. After a while you get moister build up and this will over time rot the timber of the shed.
@niall962
@niall962 3 года назад
@J J Are you trying to say that you don't even treat the timber on the exterior of the shed as it is going to rot any way. You need to go back to night class mate as 5 people who liked my comment seem to agree with me.....

Just curious, is there a reason you just don't talk along the insulation? Also, did you choose the foam board over fiber fiberglass insulation due to ease of installation?
@RossPotts

Out of curiosity, why didn't you just cut the foam boards more to size? Were you just trying to use up the spray foam?

For a shed, that would have been just fine. I was experimenting and trying to get an air tight seal, the expanding foam provided that.

21 but would have been in the teens if I didn’t fill some areas with only spray foam. Also would have used less if I cut the foam board closer to the actual size. All and all I am very happy with how well it is insulated and sealed.

I want to make my shed stay cool as possible and dry. Will that styrofoam and foam spray be able to keep hot or warm air out of my shed during the Summer?
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 5 лет назад
The insulation provides a thermal break. It makes it difficult for the transfer of heat both directions. So, if the shed is already cool it will slow the exchange of heat. Short answer it will help maintain the current temperature of the shed for the shed.

i recently began insulating a shed to turn into a workshop. THe weather turned warm and i found the inside of the shed to be dripping wet with condensation, including the insulation. I have it opened now to air out. My question is.. Should all this insulation be alright or will it need to be replaced? Im thinking that the sooner i put a space heater in the workshop to regulate the temperature, the less moisture that will build up. anyways, thanks for any help!
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 5 лет назад
If you can get good air flow and get the insulation dried out before mold sets in you should be fine. Maybe put a fan in or open a window to get cross breeze

Can you share an update on your experience with foam and rigid insulation? Thank you.
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 5 лет назад
The insulation works really well. I did get a little loose with my tolerance and cut a couple of panels about a half inch narrower. That extra quarter inch on each side take a fair amount of foam to fill. I suggest keeping your gap to about a quarter of an inch each side. Half inch each side is awfully wide to fill. The foam gun is amazing. A real labor saver, being able to adjust the flow rate is really cuts down on the waste.

Why not just fiberglass? It would have been cheaper, better insulation, and faster I'd think?
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 4 года назад
Fiberglass batting would have been quicker and likely less expenditure, but I wanted to try something different. I was wondering if I could get the air tight quality of spray foam without renting spray foam equipment. I think I achieved the same by adding time. Sometimes, I do off the wall stuff by stuffing foam in the wall... Thanks for watching...
@ryy597
@ryy597 4 года назад
how much would it cost to do an entire shed?
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 4 года назад
It was roughly $800 to insulate 200 sq ft with 9' ceilings. It can be done for less money if you go with fiberglass rolls or bats. I have air tight and worked around some unique dimensions with how I framed it...
@ryy597

@@TheBeardedGiant it goes down to -30 celcius in the winter. i have 160 square feet. i was hoping it would've costed less
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 4 года назад
an option could be use the expanding foam around the bottom and tops of the framing to stop any air leaks and then use fiberglass for the voids. stopping any air flow/drafts will go a long way to keeping it warm
@TheBeardedGiant
@TheBeardedGiant 4 года назад
do you have access to a thermal camera or a laser thermometer. you might be able to crank the heat up inside and then look for the major drafts then seal those.
