Insulwise customer Bill Simone had another Pittsburgh insulation company blow fiberglass insulation into his attic during the spring of 2018. As where Insulwise uses a "building science based" approach in its insulation practices and therefore employs current industry "best practices," most other Pittsburgh insulation companies do not.
The insulation company that Bill hired did not air seal his attic (seal the leaks that allow moisture-laden air from inside the home to escape upward into the attic during the winter) prior to adding the additional insulation. This led to a major problem for Bill. The added insulation did it's job by reducing the amount of heat conducting from the home to the attic. However, because that company did know that they needed to first seal the air leaks, moisture-laden air continued to leak into the attic from home. However, the attic and the underside of the roof was much colder.
The result was that water vapor from the home was now condensing on the underside of the roof. This is a classic precursor to a mold problem. When Bill hired Insulwise we first air sealed all the air leaks in the attic, then top-coated his insulation with a fresh layer of cellulose insulation. The result? Within just a few days his attic had completely dried out and his problem was actually solved.
