This past weekend I had the opportunity to meet up with ‪@SeanOBryanZZ‬ at the AHRA #nonamenationals in Sikeston Missouri.
Sean is a long time viewer of ‪@DavidVizard‬ and ‪@UnityMotorSportsGarage‬. He sent me CAD drawings of some printed intakes a few months back. Today you get to see them!

I'm extremely honored to have Mr. Andy Wood interview and show what I'm doing with a personal computer, time, and effort. I'm self taught and I believe with effort anyone could pick up a mouse and free modeling program. There are many different 3d printing services and even my local library has 3D printing that can be used for prototyping.

The 3d printed parts can easily be printed in aluminum, simply place it in plaster. Allow it to dry. Heat it to melt the plastic out. Then pour out the plastic. And while hot, pour the aluminum , allow to cool. Remove plaster. Refractory cement can be used with a lot of extra sand or water glass and sand Can be used pour the metal, cool , remove sand . Then mill all mounting flanges. And you have a new intake! And do e en better with lost wax and lost foam casting, just look up lost foam casting on RU-vid, Kelly coffield I think is his name , makes intakes carburators air cleaners and much more, and it all looks professionally made! At his home foundry and mache shop! ✌️

Essentium HTN CF25 Essentium HTN-CF25 (high-temperature nylon) is a polyamide-based chemistry with a 25% carbon fiber reinforced core. HTN-CF25 is the highest strength and stiffness material in the Essentium portfolio. This material also boasts easy processing and excellent thermal resistance. This material is designed for tooling applications, high-strength/stiffness jigs and fixtures, and as a replacement for light-duty aluminum parts. Referred to as "Black Aluminum", this is an incredibly versatile material -- definitely one of our favorites.

I got into 3D printing years ago because of a video of a guy in Australia 3D printing intakes for his old mini cooper autocross car that he used to mounts itbs. Ever since I’ve been in love with 3D printing. It’s a perfect hobby for car guys in my opinion

Great! Yes this is not new but just like you I see opportunities here too. And I’m wondering for a while now what kind of 3D material would be best for using in the engine bay. It has to be oil, heat and gasoline proof. While watching this video I was thinking about printing oil sumps with tubes through it to cool the oil. And indeed printing manifolds. But, there is always a but, but will it be cheaper then a cast intake? That’s a major question. And will it hold its shape when is is constantly in contact with oil? (...the printed sump that is).

My knife handles are machined from an aerospace 3D printable plastic called Ultem. This polymer has a higher melting point and is lighter that most plastics. This clear Amber colored plastic may not be suitable for intake manifolds.

Problem with Ultem for us home gamers at the current time... cost of Ultem and temperature required. So far that requires a commercial grade, very expensive printer. Fingers crossed it trickles down to us knuckle draggers!

Hey Andy, i have not seen all your videos, neither have i been able to watch all DV's videos yet. Did you/DV take on a datsun L24/L26/L28 project at any time???? Its a great old school motor, i've meddled a bit with a L28...there are the N42 and F54 castings for the engine blocks, also cylinder heads i messed with be N42 and N47 castings, the nice thing about datsun, there is the diesel version (LD28 ), using the crank from this diesel engine with required length rods and pistons, displacement ups to close to 3.3L...no way near comparing to V8's, but its a straight 6 = nice and roomy engine bay, smooth running, absurd reliable and simple engine...

Plastic 3D manifolds for most that are made 1/ plastic flexes causing movement on gaskets . 2/ plastic deteriorates and cracks . If u can design make manifolds that are reliable great .Dart tried there manifolds . I suspect if u can fix there issues you will have success .

Andy, have you tried e85 in the wife’s f150 yet? Makes mine a beast 😅 I had a 74 260z 2x2 years ago, sure wish I still had it. I put a Rochester 2 barrel on it with a manifold I built. That I take was so long the torque sheared the flexplate into a few times before I welded 2 of them together 😅 with that modern cross ram style intake design do I see 4 side drafts in Casper’s future?

This process would be perfect for a FE. FEs have the intake ports pointing in the exact wrong direction for a single 4bbl. Front 4 ports are pointing forward at the dizzy and rear 4 ports pointing at the firewall. So the 2x4bbl set up would require the carbs sitting 2 feet apart from each other to get the ports straight.

There is no reason this could not be used successfully on a drag car engine. Now, do not forget that fuel vaporization is a big deal and comes from heat. No more heat in the plenum if plastic is used so this may be not a best idea for carbureted engines but for fuel injected engines?👍

I've been wondering the same thing about 3D printing intakes. Carbon fiber infused nylon is the top grade material for that. That takes a good printer to print. Maybe is possible to get away with cheaper material like ABS or PETG but chemical resistance and temperature resistance could become a problem. I've experimented with 3D printed PLA parts under hood for some brackets and misc. parts and it for sure doesn't hold up in that heat.
@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 2 дня назад
the best is continuous strand of cf in nylon, that companys been around for a while. pla has a lot of creep under temperature. but anyway ASA prints easier than abs and is otherwise similar to abs(and available with cf). polycarbonate(with cf) is an option too, but you really need a printer that can either work in a hotbox or has a closed build volume. the added chopped cf also helps with printing, you just need to remember to have a hardened nozzle and feeder gear otherwise it will eventually run through them being abrasive. the hardened nozzles themselves add a layer of difficulty to the setup or price, the better heat conducting ones with inserts are expensive (the bigger the nozzle hole the easier). the way the chopped strands help with printing is that it helps with keeping it dimensionally stable when printing. 'making for motorsport' channel has a video on getting an ender3 to print nylon cf (and also vids on doing ITB's for a fiesta). ok there's one more trick to making underhood parts as well: wrap the pla part in actual carbon fiber + resin. it's cheap if you just wet lay it, fine enough for brackets and stuff.

What software is needed to sketch and print these 3D models?
@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 2 дня назад
any standard cad software will do, from tinkercad(easiest, least powerful) to fusion to openscad to freecad to whatever. if you use 3d software meant for graphics you can use those as well to make the meshes but you need to be careful the mesh does not have holes in it(like for rendering graphics it doesn't matter if a cube is missing a side or if something is infinitely thin or it has overlapping triangles). if it has holes the software to make the pathway for the 3d printer can't know whats supposed to be inside and what's supposed to be the outside. but really if you know nothing but want to just make a 90 degree bracket with holes in a 4x4 pattern with 10mm separation that is easy to do in tinkercad, you just drag and drop the parts and then drag and drop and move the holes to the right places. but look if you're using low end consumer printers there's a bit of a learning curve to learning to design parts that are easy to print and strong enough.

@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 2 дня назад
metal 3d printing has been around for ages(first sls metal sintering machine launched 30 year ago in 1994!). it's just really expensive, it's not that expensive for a ring or such. pcbway etc's sites you can get a quote for a stl, even in gold if you fancy. an airbox will be like 1500+. you can just imagine how expensive a full spaceship rocket nozzle is! better to just have lasercut parts and weld or bolt them together for bigger things if you can do it that way.
@lynnrunningdeer7364
@lynnrunningdeer7364 2 дня назад
@@lasskinn474 I mean for smaller projects like table top printers. I don't know how much the cost because I kinda lost interest when no one will ever answer questions about anything. I tend not to trust those anonymous reviews because you don't really know if they're being paid to say that.
@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 2 дня назад
@@lynnrunningdeer7364 the open source sls desktop printer can't yet do metal I think. the another sls printer that was supposed to go to kickstarter/production got bought up by a big corporation(basically it's not even a conspiracy that they bought them to stop them from going to market, although we don't know if the company that was supposed to make it was about to run out of funding or something). there are ways to print a filament that you fire in an oven that's been out for a while and it shrinks and get kind of a metal print out of that but it has dimensional problems for bigger parts. anyway you can also just cast parts using sacrificable pla print. ...and melt the metal in a microwave. a lot of these techniques end up as their own hobbies though. some people have built their own home metal printers for 13+ years at this point, there's a bunch of things about it that aren't easy or at the very least aren't easy on a budget. if you want to check someone who used printed parts as a way to make sand kernels for proper iron casting to make 2 stroke cylinders check a channel 'asoftaaja', you'll need to read the subtitles though. i think he's gotten the 50cc motor to 16 horsepower now(naturally aspirated 2 stroke). the amazing thing with home plastic printers is just how cheap they are now and how useful they then can be. home printing is so cheap that even if you just need a rigid drilling template you can do it without thinking about the cost.
