This is what is called "Intarsia" crochet...I find that other RU-vidrs carry their yarns along 5stitches sometimes and they yet they call it "Intarsia"....To me, once you have to carry the non-working yarn across, it becomes Tapestry...like you said, sometimes we crocheters cheat 😁

Hi Jamie! So excited! Thank you so much! This video actually explains a different technique than the one used for the Blessed Pillow. The Blessed Pillow uses Tapestry (carrying the non-dominant yarn through each of the stitches)... This video explains Intarsia (using bobbins for each separate color)... If you have any questions about the tapestry technique, let me know... I hope to get a video out about that in the near future... :)

This is an excellent tutorial for intarsia crochet! I have looked at several and this is by far the most fully explained and demonstrated. Thank you so much for the explanation and free pattern. I was looking for a tutorial for another project that I'm making for a friend and your tutorial has been invaluable. HI! Unfortunately, I cannot crochet left handed, so I can't demonstrate it that way, however, you can still use the pattern and it will come out the same. Here's how: you will be crocheting from left to right, where I crochet from right to left. As far as following the graph, you will follow it right to left on all odd number rows, and left to right on all even number rows. The only difference is that when you crochet odd number rows, you will be facing the wrong side of your work (where I would be facing the right side) and when you crochet the even number rows, you will be facing the right side of your work (where I would be facing the wrong side.). :)

This is a fabulous tutorial! I am just so thrilled with what I learned here. Regarding the slip stitches around the 3 sides? Can sc also be used? Again thank you for spending so much time teaching us this great new way to crochet!

So glad you enjoyed it! If you use single crochet around the RS, you can probably use a contrasting color to create a "border" effect. If you use single crochet on the WS, it might be a little bulkier and less seamless when you turn the pillow cover right side out.

Thank you for such a great tutorial! I get confused because I just don't "get" how to read the graph. I did not use your pattern; perhaps I should. But I drew a pattern on graph paper. And one leg of my minion is the correct size and the other is too skinny. I am guessing it happens when I come in from the left side which for me is the back side...something with how to count. Alas, I will just keep watching you teach me.

Hi Erica! I yarn under only when I am making the color change. It provides a more seamless transition between colors. When you make the first half of the stitch in the original color, the yarn "under" with the color you are changing to finishes that stitch more cleanly. The rest of the stitches that are made are done in regular single crochet where you pull up a loop, yarn "over," and pull through both loops on your hook. :)

Did u when u say u got to put the white yarn back to u when I put the new color on put the old color under the new one before carrying on with the new color Like when your new color is on the hook u take the old one and put it underneath the new color that’s on the hook does that make sense ? Do u know how to do graphgan? Blankets that is .. can I apply putting the old color under the new color kind of cross I g it over while my new color is on the hook ? Would that work to give me a Cleaner look

Hi Cassandra, I'm really not sure I understand what you're asking... My advice is to follow the video step by step, pausing and replaying as needed until you understand the technique. Graphgan blankets I think are more like my tapestry technique where the non-dominant color is carried through the other stitches rather than separated into bobbins like the Intarsia technique where there is no carry through. Each technique if done properly gives a clean look. :)

Do you make bobbins like this for the patterns with just the main color and 1 contrast color? (like your baskets or letter pillows)

Hi Holly! For the Monogram Baskets, yes. For the Monogram Pillows, no. The Monogram Pillow uses tapestry. For the baskets, I didn't want to carry the yarn through, so even though there's only two colors, I chose to make it using Intarsia. I'd say as a general rule for my patterns, any pattern with more than two colors I use Intarsia (with bobbins). MOST patterns with only two colors, I use tapestry (carrying the yarn through each stitch). Some exceptions to that are the Hunter Monogram Baskets, the Chillaxin Pillow, and The Abigail Monogram Towel which use intarsia... Its best to read each individual pattern description to see what technique was used. :)

Have you ever tried washing the cushion with the crochet case? Is there a reason why you don't slip stitch on the bottom when you put two pieces together?

Yes, you can wash it on gentle cycle (in a laundry bag or pillow case) and then dry on low fluffing as needed. As for slip stitching the bottom, the reason why I don't do that is because it creates a "lip" and I prefer a more seamless, finished look. The slip-stitched edges around the sides are hidden when you turn the pillow case right side out, and then a whip stitch provides a cleaner look for the bottom. Hope this helps explain it! :)

Is it also okay to just carry the white through if making this into a pillow where the back won't get seen anyway?

You can, however theres a few things you will want to take into consideration... First, it will change the look of the stitches slightly where you might see a little bit of the white through the color stitches. Also, your panel might be slightly larger (taller) than it should be due to the increased height of each stitch from the carry-through. Other than that, its all what you prefer.. :)

Hi! Just a quick question: on RS rows, why bring the bobbin forward then back? Why not just keep it in the back when starting the next color?

Hi! I guess that's just my way of ensuring the yarn sits in the right spot during the color transition. I feel it makes for a more smooth color transition visually and also ensures that the bobbins go back to the WS. If you find that you don't need to do that, then you are definitely free to do it in a way you are comfortable with. :)

I have a question I follow the way you do your technique intarsia with my blankets But I have a question is that how u do blankets Wrong side the yarn goes in the front right and right side it goes in the back something like that.. than again I just watch another video and that says my yarn should always be in the back … which is it for blankets that are graphgans ?

No matter what the project is, the bobbin should always be left on the wrong side (WS) when finished working with it.

What is a bobbin?

Natalie Cardon a bobbin is a small amount of yarn which can just be balled up or wrapped around a small piece of cardboard. They even sell plastic bobbins in craft stores I believe. I find it easier and quicker to just ball it up, but that’s just my preference ☺️
